Dominic Colangelo: Ohhhh Welcome to Under the Covers, a special episode. We are previewing the PGA Championship at Anorana Mink. That'll be fun to say. We're definitely going to mess it up this whole time, but we got a fun podcast for you. We are your hosts. My name is Dominic. We have Claude with us. What is going on Claude?
Matthew Zampello: What's up Dom? Gentlemen, ⁓ I'm feeling good. I love major weeks no matter if it's the PGA Championship or the Open Championship. ⁓ It's a major week. All the best players are playing together. It's going to be a fantastic week. I'm excited.
Dominic Colangelo: Beautiful, Matt. We're glad to have you here. And back from some business, Kevin is alongside. What's going on, Kevin?
Kevin Spisak: ⁓ nothing just live in the dream hung over his balls, but it's all right. This little customer event all good. But can you repeat? How did you say this golf course again?
Dominic Colangelo: Oronomink.
Kevin Spisak: Okay, okay.
Matthew Zampello: Christopher Wright-Han.
Dominic Colangelo: I think I added in a couple Ns and O's in my first try, but we're good now.
Matthew Zampello: I believe it's called the mink within the for the locals. Yeah, Kevin, can you introduce your friend?
Kevin Spisak: in the biz. This is Jarvis. He's a fat boy.
Dominic Colangelo: Just big chillin'. What's up, Jarvis?
Matthew Zampello: What can you not talk about John Rom like that? Not sorry. was
Kevin Spisak: Even Patrick Reed.
Dominic Colangelo: you
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ okay.
Dominic Colangelo: Whoa, you're going to speak to Jarvis like that? It's a little rude. Well, like we said, this will be a fun one. ⁓ If you remember the master's preview, we had a fun little episode there as well. We're going to do something similar. So we're to do a little aeronomic, aeronomic, recap, review, preview, kind of go through the course a little bit. And then afterwards,
Kevin Spisak: No, Jarvis is way better than Patrick Reed.
Dominic Colangelo: Kevin has some trivia for us and that's gonna decide our draft order. And we'll get into that a little bit later. After that, we'll do our official one and done's for the week as well. So I think to start it off, Matt, what are you liking about Oronomic? I know you're a big fan.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, well, I do like A Run Amink. think it looks really cool. It looks visually appealing. I think we can all agree on that. It's a course that is very, you would want to play it, right? You'd want to go there and take a picture. So I love that about it. 1912, originally designed by Donald Ross. So he designed Pioneers Number Two. A bunch of different courses around the Northeast. He said, there you go. He said this was one of his best designs he ever created. His masterpiece, I think he's what he called it. ⁓ So, you know, I think the greens in typical Donald Ross fashion are pretty tricked up. ⁓ Big undulations, really tough to putt.
Dominic Colangelo: Interlocking in Minnesota. Start to interrupt. Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: And then it went through a redesign. So like most major championship venues, feel like nowadays redesigned by Gilhans sometime in the 2010s. It was in 2017. Redesigned. Some of the famous tournaments out there. 1962 PGA Championship, which was won by Gary Player himself. The Black Knight. It hosted the 2018 BMW Championship. which was won by Keegs, Keegan Bradley, and the 2020 KPMG Women's PGA Championship. ⁓ I forget who that was won by, but that would have been the COVID one, so there wouldn't have been a ton of people out there. So that's, it's gonna be a great week. ⁓ From what I've seen, and from what I remember in 2018, it's kind of a bomber's paradise. think you can kind of.
Dominic Colangelo: Ooh, interesting. Okay.
Matthew Zampello: hit it everywhere or hit it really far and carry a lot of the trouble, a lot of the bunkers. So I would bet that somebody that drives it pretty far is gonna win this week. How about you guys?
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, we were watching that fried egg recap of the course and it's very cool. And he was saying just that. And one of the big things is if you miss the fairway, it'll be a little bit more trouble for you. Obviously these guys are incredible wherever they are on the course, but it's just kind of how fast the greens are, how tough they are. Like you said, the undulation and everything. And then a lot of them are surrounded by bunkers. It'll be a lot. scarier to go for those and try to score there. it's very interesting. then kind of to piggyback on the changes that were made, ⁓ before there was 74 bunkers. Can you guess how many there are now?
Kevin Spisak: hundred nine.
Matthew Zampello: I I feel like Gil Hans usually takes Bungers out 65.
Dominic Colangelo: 174. He added 100. Yeah, if I had to guess, maybe he cuts them in half and that counts as two. That seems like a lot of real estate to make into a bunker, but the course looks awesome. It kind of gives me like a cartoony Oakmont with how clean the fairways and rough looks. Obviously it's not squared off like the hard edges.
Kevin Spisak: jeez.
Matthew Zampello: Okay. Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: but it's very distinct on where you are on the course. It looks awesome.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I like to learn in a little bit about the course with some of the videos, but in 2018 at the BMW championship Keegan won with a score. He was tied at 20 under so. Definitely a low scoring week that year. It'd be interesting to see if this year for the PGA championship, if it gets that low or, you know, we need our ceremonial, I can't believe the rough is this tall, you know, ball drop videos that everyone shares. I haven't seen one of those yet, but I'm bound to see at least six next year, know, tomorrow.
Matthew Zampello: already I saw blocky already pull already do it here he's making content baby ⁓ I think I think we got to think about this course as I mean the mink has to be top course nicknames and all golf like that's a great nickname to have for your home golf course if you a member out at a run at aronimink like where you we're playing the mink today that's I think that's
Kevin Spisak: Ha ha ha.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ yeah. Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: I'm a big fan of that. ⁓
Dominic Colangelo: I wonder if whenever you become a member, you get a mink coat. That'd be kinda cool.
Matthew Zampello: Instead of a green jacket you get mink coats aronimink
Dominic Colangelo: Ooh, there you go. Let's propose that. We'll write an email.
Kevin Spisak: Sick.
Matthew Zampello: I think the only way I agree, I think the winning score, if it stays firm, the problem is May in Philadelphia is usually not firm. think May in Philadelphia is usually pretty wet. ⁓ I think if they tuck the pins and they kind of firm up the golf course, you could see it play hard, but I think winter is going to be easily over minus 15. ⁓ I think it might, think if you shoot minus 20, you win. You take that right now for sure. But I think that they could tuck the pins and put the pins in really, really hard locations. ⁓ I think you have two things going into there. The PGA of America ⁓ probably won't do that because they're not historically known to do that. And it would cause pace of play to be six hour rounds if they did that. So I think they're gonna shy away from that.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: What do you guys prefer between like super low scoring majors versus not? Like would you rather this be a 20 under week or a four under week?
Dominic Colangelo: I'm less about the total score. I don't like it when it's a blowout.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Dominic Colangelo: So like if it's back and forth a lot, I think the most recent example where I can catch myself where I'm kind of going back and forth is the ⁓ Valspar was kind of low scoring and it wasn't like super exciting. So I'm curious if that's gonna creep into my mind if it is low scoring, but I'd rather see, you know, guys battling towards the end.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Matthew Zampello: I love seeing, like I watched, I was doing some work the other night and I was watching Brooks Kepka, Kepka's last final round at Shinnecock. And I forget he won at even par and like watching them grind for par and even grind for bogeys is fun to watch. Like I love, I love, I think the more carnage, the better. PGA championships, just not really known for that. The courses that they picked, the time of year that they have. ⁓ They just don't do that. So I think it's I think I saw one thing on this week already where somebody was like it just feels like a regular PGA tour event just bigger
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ okay. Like bigger atmosphere. Okay.
Matthew Zampello: So yeah, like a bigger atmosphere, but like everything else feels like pretty much like a regular.
Kevin Spisak: because Michael Black's in the field, that's It's a huge event. I like Blacky, I said that.
Dominic Colangelo: That's assault.
Matthew Zampello: Hey. Yeah, you're on the block right now. Yeah, the block.
Kevin Spisak: Black party.
Dominic Colangelo: There's some, fun architecture things is the, the first and 10th holes share a tee box, which I feel like doesn't happen super often in the PGA tour now. But like, I'm curious how they're going to police that. Cause you know, they always have the camera behind the players. So maybe they, you have to have the barrier and give them a room. So maybe they just don't have a behind the back shot for a like the opening T, you know, like I'm curious what they do there.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, and they're gonna have to probably set up like a stable camera. And then I also think there's a hole, if I'm not mistaken, that just has like two greens basically connected with like a strip of rough between them. there's it's like maybe like a foot worth of rough that's it's basically one green. It's just like a separation piece, which is pretty cool. But I wonder
Dominic Colangelo: Mm-hmm. I wonder if we get to see both on the same broadcast, like on the same camera.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, well I'm hoping that one a person hits it on the green other green that they're not supposed to and then they have to figure out a way to like chip across that that foot that foot of rough like you can't putt through Like you're gonna have to chip off the green ⁓ That's what I'm that's what I'm
Dominic Colangelo: That'd be fun. I would love to see that. Yeah, the gentle handshake has been thrown around a bunch and I was looking up and that's kind of his, ⁓ what do call it? A calling card where he, Donald Ross really enjoys the opening hole is kind of a warmup for the player. I really liked that. I didn't know that before. That's really cool.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ yeah. ⁓ Yep. Pioneer's number two, was, you know, played it and I hit three iron wedge into the green and I was like, ⁓ this isn't going to be that hard. Ball rolls forever. I go to proceed to shoot like 85.
Dominic Colangelo: You
Matthew Zampello: It got hard.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, it gets hard. It's like hot ones. Everyone's bold and brave after the first two.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: I was gonna say one more storyline, or not storyline, but one more thing I saw about this course is the price of beer. Did y'all see this on Twitter?
Kevin Spisak: No.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: A Michelob 16 ounce is $15.
Matthew Zampello: But that's PGA of America 101. They do that every year. This is the, they do it, it's literally every, I mean, they're going to charge, they're going to charge you like. Part of your 401k at PGA Frisco for a beer so they can make their money back on PGA Frisco next year.
Dominic Colangelo: Is that a money thing or is that to limit it so it's not like waste management? It's like you you gotta you gotta pay for it. You're not just gonna get cheap beer like it's a bar
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. I think the USGA has gone to the tickets or one of the one of the one of the tournaments has gone to like where the tickets are are $200 minimum, but you get unlimited food and bed.
Dominic Colangelo: I don't know. ⁓ yeah, I've seen those. I just think it's wild that you can buy 12 pack of these for the same price of one at this tournament. It's bonkers.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Yeah. It's why, like, I I, going to the Masters this year, ruined every other sporting event for me. it's it's tough. Yeah, and it's like two dollars for a beer.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, was like a dollar for a sandwich. Jeez, that's the dream.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: It's amazing.
Dominic Colangelo: Well, beautiful. Anything else on the on the preview, boys?
Matthew Zampello: Just the PGA of America is a bad, bad organization and we have to live through a week of this, although they have a major championship. we, we, we tolerate it, but.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ man. So getting in, we're going to get to the trivia in a second, but I want to introduce the draft that we have going. ⁓ So similar to the masters, we changed up the rounds a little bit. So first round, we're going to go crazy storyline, which is similar. So choose whatever you want. ⁓ Round two, we're choosing the person who's going to win their first major, not PGA championship first major ever. So we're gonna choose one person out of there. Number three will be who we think is gonna miss the cut. And then number four, we're gonna choose out of the last 10ish years, what's your favorite PGA championship venue? So I it'll be a fun one. ⁓ Kevin, what kind of trivia do you have for us to decide draft order?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, so whoever gets closest ⁓ will do. I'll just go second and whoever gets closest to the answer goes first. Whoever's furthest goes third. ⁓ So the PGA Championship, Matt's favorite event, apparently it used to be a match play event for a long time. The trivia question is name the year the last time it was a match play event and
Dominic Colangelo: It works.
Kevin Spisak: Bonus points. If you can't get the year, you can guess the golf course, the city it was in, ⁓ or the winner for your trivia answer. I am absolutely desperate for one of you to not get it right because I do not want the beer chug. We'll do closest to determine draft order, but if you get it right, it counts for the beer chug.
Dominic Colangelo: Ooh, okay, interesting.
Matthew Zampello: I don't know. I feel like the match play stopped before World War II.
Dominic Colangelo: I know me either. I was gonna say is it, I feel like it's not recent at all, but I don't know.
Matthew Zampello: before. I'm gonna say 19. 1928 was the last match play year.
Kevin Spisak: Okay.
Matthew Zampello: Cedar Crest in Dallas.
Kevin Spisak: Okay, done.
Dominic Colangelo: Uhhhh The last match play in PGA, right? PGA's history.
Kevin Spisak: PGA Championship, PGA Championship specifically, yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: Okay. Give me like, let's go like 1911.
Kevin Spisak: You
Dominic Colangelo: I'll go a little bit lower. ⁓ No, it's not on purpose. I don't even have a course guess. and pebble.
Kevin Spisak: Okay. Well, the PGA championship, the last time it was match play was 1957. So Matt gets the first pick in the storyline draft. It was hosted at, I kind of gave you an unintentional clue here with my pullover, but it was at Miami Valley Golf Course in Dayton, Ohio. So.
Dominic Colangelo: Not at all. Ooooo
Matthew Zampello: And it was won by Ben Hogan.
Kevin Spisak: It was won by Lionel Hebert. He won two and one over Dow Finsterwald. What a name.
Matthew Zampello: You know what's- is that- are you- are you also, ⁓ you know, giving us a hint with your colonial hat?
Kevin Spisak: No, no, I the the colonial hat was to try to throw you off because the I figured you'd read one of the two and kind of try to play off of it but
Matthew Zampello: Douth? Douth? Well, So Dow Fincerwald is the old head pro at Colonial. Yeah, he is. he still does the starter. I guess maybe it's, I don't know, it's probably his son, ⁓ Dow Fincerwald Jr. ⁓ Still does the starting for the member guest. He was the starter at the member guest. He was like, he's like, he's like the OG pro of Colonial. And so the, the,
Kevin Spisak: Wow. Who knew?
Dominic Colangelo: Wait, really? That's crazy.
Kevin Spisak: That's awesome.
Matthew Zampello: when you win club pro shop credit, they're called Dow dollars, because they're Dow fence to wall dollars. Yeah, fun facts.
Kevin Spisak: ⁓ wow. That's awesome. Look at that.
Dominic Colangelo: cool. Dang. I was gonna say that name belongs in the 1910s. Do I get points for that?
Matthew Zampello: You didn't even know you-
Kevin Spisak: My outfit is absolutely perfect for trivia question, but... Alright, Matt, you're up first.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Do I get to go first? right, crazy storyline, right? Okay, ⁓ I think we're in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, known for their sports fans. I feel, and you guys tell me if you're not feeling this, ⁓ the hate for European players has been so heavy this year on tour.
Kevin Spisak: Yep.
Matthew Zampello: Fitzpatrick, the Ryder Cup was the last major tournament we had up in the Northeast was the Ryder Cup, Bethpage Black. That didn't leave a good taste in people's mouth. My crazy storyline is there's some sort of fan European player interaction, ⁓ whether that's a fight or something is thrown at one of the European players. There's some sort of altercation. Everybody gets heated.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Matthew Zampello: I'm thinking it's Saturday is when this happens. Things always get kind of crazy on Saturday. That's the most attended day. I just think drinks are going to be flowing. Philadelphia, people get chippy. United States, 250. If a European's up at the top and they're playing well, it's going to get, there's going to be some action. I think there, I don't know what type of altercation, but there's going to be an altercation.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, Philly scumbags.
Dominic Colangelo: actually love that. That's an incredible take. I think that's perfect.
Matthew Zampello: Thank you, thank you. I'm really, I'm hoping for, I'm hoping for, you know, I don't want anybody to get hurt, but maybe feeling. I want feelings to get hurt for sure. And I want, you know, I want the fans to, you know, I don't want them to, you know, be disrespectful, but I would love, you know, to get some emotion out of some of the players and, know, something like that. Something's gonna happen. I'm monitoring for sure.
Kevin Spisak: You You
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ sure.
Kevin Spisak: Someone smuggles in a nice D battery and throws it at one of the players.
Dominic Colangelo: Matt, how many? That one's too accurate, Kevin. You gotta chill. So Matt, this last weekend at the Truist, there was quite a bit of F-bombs. Like their pause button or their bleep button was not doing well. Let's see over and under on CustWords and the broadcast with these Philly fans.
Matthew Zampello: Oh, I don't know, man. think there's gotta be, there's gotta be a couple. I mean, I would say five.
Dominic Colangelo: I'm taking the over.
Matthew Zampello: Okay, yeah, five and a half maybe. All right. That are caught on TV, hot mics on TV. Yeah, yeah. No, just, I think things are gonna get thrown down for sure.
Dominic Colangelo: I'll be back.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, way over, way over. Five per hour.
Dominic Colangelo: All right, Kevin. ⁓ yeah, I love that. All right, Kevin, what do you have for your first pick? Crazy Storyline.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, my crazy storyline kind of fits, I think, a narrative of the year a little bit, but, you know, fresh off of some nice performances, riding his brother's back and now taking over for the Fitzpatrick family. I Alex is going to outplay old Matty boy and Alex is going to, you know, beat Matt. He's going to be in top three. The USA chants will be roaring at him. He's going to take that D battery off the head or something. But no, my storyline is that Alex beats Matt. He wrote his back to get his PJ Tour card, and then now he's going to overtake him.
Dominic Colangelo: That's fun. I like that a lot.
Matthew Zampello: Could Alex with Patrick be the next Nellie Korda? Do you remember Nellie Korda is the younger sister of Jessica Korda and Jessica Korda was originally the better one. And then Nellie came on later and now Nellie is like the better player. Does Alex end up becoming a better player than Matt TBD? No.
Dominic Colangelo: He's been playing a while.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Dominic Colangelo: Ooh. Interesting. I had no idea. That's cool, okay. Well, my storyline, bit of a doozy. A very interesting situation this man is going through right now. A lot of struggles. ⁓ Recently went through a club change and I think Justin Rose is gonna be top 10 this week.
Kevin Spisak: Nice.
Matthew Zampello: Do see he had 20 something irons in his bag on the practice range? Yeah. He was testing something, but he had 20 different irons, individual irons in his bag. And you usually only have what? Seven, six or seven? Like it's not that many. So he's definitely searching right
Kevin Spisak: Okay.
Dominic Colangelo: Did he really? ⁓ jeez, that makes it even more juicy then.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. He's going through it.
Dominic Colangelo: I had no idea. I'm keeping it though. I'm ripping it. I feel like, so we talked about it in our Quail, I mean, yeah, Quail Hollow recap, but. ⁓
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Okay.
Dominic Colangelo: He's very consistent still. His only downfall was fairway to green, his approach game. And I think all that, all the undulation, I know it's the most important part. I know. But I think, think Quell Hollow exposes that. And I think this is a much different course. I think he'll be just fine. And yeah, I'm thinking top 10 for J Rose. Lock it in.
Matthew Zampello: You
Kevin Spisak: All right, I can dig it.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah. So.
Kevin Spisak: The social media posts would be electric with McLaren Golf. They'll be just highlighting that like crazy in this, you know, broadcasting, come on, come spend 375 bucks a club.
Dominic Colangelo: Imagine the unreal price tag. Imagine the cool videos from that.
Matthew Zampello: I can't play.
Kevin Spisak: Mm.
Matthew Zampello: Are we doing snake? we going, are we, ⁓ we're doing snake.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, so Dom's back up.
Dominic Colangelo: Yes, well I'll go next. So first time major winner. ⁓ I was going to go SunJM thinking my first pick was going to be chosen, but now that I'm first, it's very fun. I'm thinking Tommy Fleetwood gets his first major here.
Matthew Zampello: Wow, but you can't use them in your one and done's.
Dominic Colangelo: I've already used them, so we're good.
Matthew Zampello: Okay.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, I like Tommy Fleetwood this week. A lot of people say that Quail Hollow and like the tournament before people use it as like a little bit of a tune up and he's looking mighty fine. So I'm like, I'm riding his coattails here.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, Quail's a nice ⁓ tune up for sure with how difficult it is. Yeah, some of the other tune up courses or the tournaments right before majors, feel like people kind of balk at or don't really take seriously. The field may not be very strong, but Quail's a sweet one. So I like that pick.
Dominic Colangelo: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Thank you, thank you. All right, you're up, Kev.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, mine, I feel like this is kind of a lame pick, but it's also kind of an awesome pick. I'm happy that you didn't take him, but it seems too easy to pick Cameron Young as a ⁓ first time major winner here at the PGA Championship. Bomber's paradise, like Matt said, he's putting just insanely well. He is at the top of his game right now. That would be very fun if he could reel off a major win here this week.
Dominic Colangelo: That'd be sick.
Matthew Zampello: Quick equipment quip, I changed to the same grips that he has on his clubs, the Golf Pride Align Max. ⁓ Unbelievable grips. They have such a big, ⁓ you know, kind of notch in the back of where you set your fingers. Love the way those grips feel.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm. Nice. How much bigger are they than your ribbed tour velvets?
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ really?
Matthew Zampello: same size, their standard size, but the- big? Noticeably bigger. Yeah, like it's very pronounced. I'm a big fan-
Kevin Spisak: No, mean like the ridge, yeah. Really? Okay. Yeah, I've got the standard aligns on mine. And I just felt a line max the other day, installed them for a friend. And yeah, I thought they were pretty cool. I think the look of them is pretty slick too.
Dominic Colangelo: Okay, so is it like a, like it feels like the pistol putter grip, where is it that crazy, or you just feel it more than the Align, like the normal Align?
Kevin Spisak: No, it's just like a ridge down the spine of the golf grip. It wouldn't be pistol shaped.
Matthew Zampello: Use the
Dominic Colangelo: Okay. Gotcha. Gotcha. You're saying it was massive. All right. That's fun. I like that.
Matthew Zampello: My first first time major winner for this week. Ricky Fowler. Coming off his good week at Quail Hollow, Ricky Fowler makes my teenage years come true. He wins on a major, gets his first major win. He had that year where he got like top three in every major he played and never won one. ⁓ I think he's playing well.
Dominic Colangelo: You
Matthew Zampello: He's driving it great. I just think he's gonna, I think he's gonna do it. I think it's gonna be, it's gonna be validation for his entire career. And I'm all here for
Kevin Spisak: I need that for my soul. While I don't think it will happen, I need it to happen.
Matthew Zampello: Would that be unanimously, if you think of everybody in the field, would that be the most popular person? Like nobody would have a bad thing to say about Ricky Fowler winning a major.
Kevin Spisak: There's like some bump analog somewhere that's like, you know, mad about the all orange clothes or something. And they just don't want to be, you know, a part of the group. That person would be lame, but everyone else would be stoked.
Dominic Colangelo: I think the only one that would rival is Jordan Spieth getting his grand slam.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ yeah, I kind of forgot about that.
Dominic Colangelo: That's the only one that's like close, but I think you're right where I don't know anybody that has ever said a bad thing about Ricky Faller.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. So that's my first time major winner. I he's going to get it done.
Dominic Colangelo: I hope you I hope he goes all orange, like with the orange pants too, like he did the other week.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, that was vintage just going even more orange than he always goes orange.
Dominic Colangelo: Kevin, were saying he looks like a kid going to lunch in the hallway with his little water bottle. I've never shot.
Kevin Spisak: I bought at the Bridgestone Invitational like one of the last years. I guess that they had it before they moved it to I think it's a senior tour event now.
Matthew Zampello: It's Binky.
Dominic Colangelo: is Binky.
Kevin Spisak: But it was a WGC event at Firestone Country Club. I bought one of the like Puma, Ricky Fowler, orange flat build hats. It says Firestone on the side. I thought it was so cool at the time. And thinking back on it, I looked like a huge nerd. I still have it, so I'll wear it next week if he wins. Or if he's top 10, I'll wear it and look like a loser. But I love Ricky.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah. ⁓ please.
Matthew Zampello: might have to borrow that from you if I lose a bet this year.
Dominic Colangelo: And what is that?
Matthew Zampello: We have a birdie challenge at our club and the first person to do it, all the other people have to wear all Rickie Fowler orange head to toe at an MGA event.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ that's fun. So you're not getting, you're not hitting the birdie challenge.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Well, I have two holes left. have three holes left and then my other buddy has two holes left. So we're kind of getting each other's, you know, we're chirping at each other when we get to those individual holes for each other to try to get. Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ that's cool.
Kevin Spisak: Is that you have to make a birdie on every hole? Nice. That's fun.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: That's cool.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, I knocked nine out in like the first week of January and then it's been very cold from the first week of January all the way through now. Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: Dang.
Kevin Spisak: I wish I was good at golf.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, wouldn't that be fun?
Matthew Zampello: And the holes I have to do it on are like not hard too. It's like now they're just in my
Dominic Colangelo: That sounds about right. What about him? Does he have some hard holes coming up?
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, we have one, the 18th hole we both have. So that's going to be like the tough one. That's kind of a tough hole. So we both have to get 18. So it might come down to 18, which if we're going to play 18 together, it'll be fun.
Dominic Colangelo: If you're listening, please do it. We have to see this happen. We need Matt in all orange.
Matthew Zampello: He is an AWL.
Dominic Colangelo: Beautiful. We love you. All right, Kevin. Who do you have? No, sorry, sorry. Matthew, who do you have missing?
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ yeah. I YouTube Golf, Bryson DeChambeau missing the cut. I was gonna put Michael Block up there, but that just felt too easy. A little bit like a home run. Bryson, I think, absolutely just ejects after this and just goes on like a rampage of social media, YouTube, trying to find himself. think he's, I think Bryson is gonna go through his quarter life. after this PGA Championship. Like I truly believe he's gonna hit that like, what am I doing? Am I doing the right things? And I think he's gonna have another transformation after this miscut of himself as Liv begins to fold.
Dominic Colangelo: Interesting. He's going to start golfing in cowboy boots because he's living in Texas.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, yeah, you know, maybe he could. He's built in an absolute monstrosity out here in Dallas. So yeah, his house.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ really? Did you see him in the range? I don't know if it was AI or not. Did you see this video? Yeah. I'll send it to you. He's like, he's doing the tiger like hit it up with his wedge, but it's all with one hand. He hits it a couple of times and then one handed just swings it around. Like what in the world?
Matthew Zampello: today. and then eat it. Yeah. He's, I mean, they're usually pretty good at that stuff, but yeah, I think he, I think he's so distracted. I, I just don't think he's going to have a week and he's going to, you know, bitch and moan and do all that stuff.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah. I don't hate it. What you got, Kevin?
Kevin Spisak: Alright, for my player to miss the cut, we go with the guy who tears up PGA Championships. Took a little hiatus to the live tour, but now he's back. But he's still not back. Bruxy, I'm sorry, he's gonna miss the cut.
Dominic Colangelo: Oooooh! Okay!
Kevin Spisak: He's either gonna win or he's gonna miss the cut. I think there's no in between. I'm gonna look like either a fool or the smartest guy ever.
Matthew Zampello: There's no in between.
Dominic Colangelo: You
Matthew Zampello: I actually think that's good pick because he doesn't play well on birdie fests. He does well when the course is really tough, like Shinnecock. He doesn't win when you have to go shoot 20 on...
Dominic Colangelo: That's on.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Mm-hmm.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ Okay.
Matthew Zampello: So I, pick.
Dominic Colangelo: Nice, all right. Let's see, for my miss cut, I'm gonna go, little callback here, and tell me if this is too cheesy, but he's going for the grand slam. He's been going for it since 2017. I'm thinking Jordan Spieth misses a cut. It's too much pressure. He's been playing well recently, but I think he just crumbles.
Matthew Zampello: feel like this is the first time I've heard him being asked about it this much. Like usually he kind of flies under the radar of like, ⁓ yeah, he could win then he could win. But like people are like with Rory actually doing it and now ⁓ Scotty only needing the US Open. Like it's in more people's minds. So like people are actually asking in Jordan's like, yeah, I mean, I think he said it this week. He was like, this is the tournament I would want to win the most. my life.
Dominic Colangelo: Mm-hmm. That's a lot of pressure.
Kevin Spisak: a lot of pressure to put on yourself.
Matthew Zampello: a lot of pressure to put on yourself. And that swing does not look good, but he makes putts.
Dominic Colangelo: I was gonna say like, is this acceptable? Do y'all accept this choice?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, yeah, why wouldn't we?
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, it's your pick, you know, yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: Okay. Beautiful. Beautiful. I was going to go with like a, like a Min Woo Lee or Jason Day. Those are two mid level, I feel like.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Jason Day is like a fashion icon now, so that's like too easy of a miscut.
Dominic Colangelo: Okay, cool. I'm glad, okay, I'm gonna go ahead turn it off.
Matthew Zampello: That's why I didn't choose Blocky.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: That would have been fun though. How about this? How about if, let's get an over under, let's get a placement. If Michael Block is above this number, then we get to make you do something.
Matthew Zampello: That was fun, but too easy. make me do- that's so open-ended Dom. Make me do something-
Dominic Colangelo: Well, yeah, but like take a shot. Like an open ended shot like you have for me. We can tell you anytime to take a shot. Get your mind out of the gutter.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. You
Matthew Zampello: Okay. I just don't take open end, but I understand. I would say how many players in the field? Like 150 or something like that. I think it's about 150.
Dominic Colangelo: top 30.
Kevin Spisak: 30 would be wild. What's the number?
Matthew Zampello: If he finishes top, like above top 30, I just take a shot.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah. 30 and up.
Matthew Zampello: I had to take a shot if he finishes 30 and up. Done. Sure. I'll take that back. No, no, no, no, no, you can't take it back. No, no, no, no, no.
Dominic Colangelo: Is that Kevin? Kevin, give me a better number. This clearly is not a good number. He's too confident.
Kevin Spisak: What was the number? ⁓ What's the placement to be able to play next year's PGA championship? He got it. The first craze. Is it top 10? Okay. Yeah, that's not happening.
Matthew Zampello: Top 10
Dominic Colangelo: it a 50? Let's do top 50 then. He makes a cut and then plays well on Saturday.
Matthew Zampello: Top 50? Yeah, I'll take that. I don't think he's gonna finish top 50. I think he's older.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah. Beautiful. All right. Top 50. So best PGA championship venue over the last 10ish years. This is interesting because I feel like I didn't watch an incredible amount of golf back then, but I'm just going strictly based on which course I like the best. And I'm to choose TPC Harding Park. And that one is a little bit biased because Matt and I played it whenever I lived over there. But yeah, it's not because of the tournament, because it was COVID. It's kind of hard to judge a lot of things on, but Morikawa won it. But it's just such a sick course. ⁓ Right by a lake, they got the huge cypress trees just surrounding the course all through the fairways. They're very well-manicured. ⁓
Matthew Zampello: the COVID one.
Dominic Colangelo: In the morning, if you catch it right, it gets really foggy and looks like a movie. It's very fun. ⁓ I'm strictly strictly choosing because of just the course layout itself.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Nice. I like it. For my pick, this is a very biased pick. I will own that ahead of time, but I'm still going to pick it anyways. 2019 PGA Championship course in Belle Reve, St. Louis, Missouri. It's the home of the BMW Championship this year, so I'll be in attendance. 2030 President's Cup. It had the, or sorry, 2018, I said 2019, it's 2018 PJ Championship. Brooks beat Tiger and everyone thought Tiger was going to be fully back. And then he wound up winning the next year at the Masters. Belle Reve is just the course conditions are awesome. Just everything is so perfectly green. You know, that, that shade that just screams just, just beautiful golf. The BMW championship was there in 2008 and Camilo Villegas won. So lots of fun BMWs, future events. I'm very biased because I've gotten to play it a couple of times, but Belarive was very fun.
Matthew Zampello: Okay, I was gonna ask you how many times you played it,
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, played it, I think, four times now. Yeah, I had one of my, one of my like better days like ever. I was playing with a friend versus his father-in-law and father-in-law's friend. So was two old guys versus two young guys. And we were just beating them so bad that on the back nine, we played the tips and we were both just like killing it with the driver and just hitting bombs all day. I just like... fell in love with the course particularly because I was playing so well that day.
Matthew Zampello: Okay, I like it.
Dominic Colangelo: Yep. Understandable. All right, Matt, let's hear it.
Matthew Zampello: My favorite PGA venue is Quail. I'm just fucking Quail.
Kevin Spisak: That'd be awesome. Talk so much shit about it and then pick it.
Dominic Colangelo: You You dirty dog.
Kevin Spisak: you
Matthew Zampello: I thought that would get you guys. I knew it. it. I knew it. know, tough you guys with that one.
Kevin Spisak: We'll have to go back to the replay, instant replay and see both of our eyes light up as you start to say it.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: I said 10 and then I then I dubbed it with 10 ish years because I was a dumb dumb and I Thought whistling straights was closer but whistling straights ⁓ In 2015 I the reason why I asked you guys this question for our for our PGA championship preview is because I think the PGA of America does a bad job at getting everybody excited like golf courses. it regionally, yes, right? It gets Kevin excited at Belle Reve, ⁓ things of that nature. It's exciting that the PGA Championship is going to be in Frisco next year. But I guarantee somebody in, you know, ⁓ Washington or Washington DC or Florida is not excited to watch PGA Frisco on the tell on TV. Whereas
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Matthew Zampello: The US Open somehow has a way of picking venues that people are like, ⁓ yeah, like we get to watch like Shinnecock, Pebble, Riviera, Pinehurst, Oakmont. Like there's something about those golf courses that gets people excited. I just, the PJ championship does such a bad job at doing that. like Whistling Straits, if the PJ championship went back to Whistling Straits, I'd be excited to watch it. I feel like that's a cool golf course, good visuals, et cetera, et cetera.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, that's a good point. And I never really thought about it like that, but that is so accurate. The PGA Championship courses, other than Quail because Quail's sick, but they always feel like kind of random. And like you said, like regionally, everyone gets hyped up. Like Southern Hills and Tulsa, you know, my wife went to Tulsa and a lot of her friends still live there. And they were just like ecstatic that it was, you know, in Tulsa. Same with Belle Reve here. Or another good friend lives in Louisville, went to Valhalla. They're very, very specific to the location, just that the course is in my hometown kind of feeling.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Right, right. So that's kind of the point of, guess, this question was to see where everybody's at. And it's interesting where everybody went. Dom, you picked one that was close to your heart. Kevin, you picked one that was close to your heart.
Dominic Colangelo: And you picked a sick course.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, you could throw in though, like, Kioa is a pretty cool, like, notable course. I almost picked that for mine or Bethpage, but Bethpage I associate more with US Opens rather than PGA Championships. ⁓ You know, although they hosted it in 2019. But yeah, Whistling Straits is a awesome pick.
Matthew Zampello: I do as well. Yeah, for sure.
Dominic Colangelo: I was close to going Valhalla because ⁓ I've played it on Oculus on the VR and it's very fun.
Kevin Spisak: You
Matthew Zampello: thought you were about to say halo. I truly thought you were gonna say hey. I played that map on HeyLube.
Dominic Colangelo: That'd be a good guess though. That's a crap.
Kevin Spisak: You
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ man, well, beautiful. That's the draft.
Matthew Zampello: Want to dance?
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, sweet. Let's see. So quick recap. We'll go through it fast because we already did it in the last episode, but ⁓ last week was our best overall picks. If you average them out, Matt had Rory finished T19 and then I had Ludwig. He went eighth place T8 and then Kevin leading the pack with JJ spawn and T5. So total scores, Matt.
Kevin Spisak: Go, JJ.
Dominic Colangelo: is at 601, Kevin's at 426, and I am currently at 239. So Matt, who do you have as your one and done for the PGA Championship at the Mink?
Matthew Zampello: mink. My one and done using another one of the big guns this week. Scotty Scheffler.
Kevin Spisak: No, that was my pick. Damn.
Dominic Colangelo: Damn it, dude. I knew it was going away. I knew it wasn't going to be there.
Matthew Zampello: I think the reason I think that is because I think Shinnecock is gonna be too hard for him. I think he gets frustrated at hard golf courses like Pebble and or ⁓ I mean not Pebble ⁓ Pioneers and places like in Oakmont etc. I think Scotty Scheffler wins the PGA Championship and I think he wins it
Dominic Colangelo: Ooh, okay.
Kevin Spisak: Ooh, easily. Damn. ⁓ now I need a new pick. Damn it. All right. We'll go with. ⁓
Matthew Zampello: Sorry.
Kevin Spisak: ⁓ Alright, I guess let's see if he can break through the wall here. Let's go with our boy. Mr. Simple, beautiful swing Ludwig Oberg.
Dominic Colangelo: Hello. I like that.
Matthew Zampello: Kevin, brought up on the other day's podcast, is it time for him to actually win? Like, feel like we talk about, Ludwig is awesome, but like, when does he win? He just doesn't, I feel like he doesn't close the door.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I hope he doesn't turn into like a, I think he's probably already passed this, but I hope he doesn't turn into, that or like Will's Allotaurus where he falls off the face of the earth. You know, like, Allotaurus had such like a fun run, fun to follow, but just like couldn't putt. Ludwig's swing is just so beautiful. It's so simple and powerful. You know, I think he could tear up, round him in.
Matthew Zampello: Ricky?
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Um, you know, if he can putt well, you handle some of those uneven lies. I think he'll play well.
Matthew Zampello: Mm-hmm.
Dominic Colangelo: I can dig it. Yeah, think he'll be top 20 for sure. Like, I think that's a pretty good bet for Ludwig. ⁓
Matthew Zampello: Maybe he'll fight one of the people and make my storyline come true as well. Being European.
Kevin Spisak: Ha
Dominic Colangelo: Wouldn't that be beautiful? I love that. All right, well, I don't know if anyone's done this yet. I guess we've only had one major. I can't remember our one and done's for the Masters, but I'm going to choose somebody that I can't typically choose during the normal season. Potentially a live golfer. I don't know if you can guess right off the bat.
Kevin Spisak: Please don't be Patrick Reed.
Dominic Colangelo: Give me.
Matthew Zampello: No, Patrick Gray's not on the live tour.
Dominic Colangelo: Just kidding. Give me John. One and done. Lock it. It's happening. It's happening. Bombs it, loves birdies, hit an albatross. He's living the high life right now and it's gonna transfer into this week.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Yeah, living the high life. Can't get out of his live contract. Looks like he's extremely unhappy, but you never know. You never know.
Dominic Colangelo: This is gonna break him ⁓ out of the live conundrum here. He's gonna win, and then I'm gonna be like, all right, he can come back. It'll be fine.
Kevin Spisak: Ha
Matthew Zampello: think the Saudis are gonna let him out of it.
Dominic Colangelo: That doesn't matter, they're not paying them anymore.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, true.
Kevin Spisak: What's the deal? it like a time thing? How did Bryson and P-Read get out?
Matthew Zampello: He didn't... Well, Bryson signed a year before Rom, so Bryson's contract is up at the end of this year. And so like, he's like gonna be out. But like, John Rom's contract I think goes for another two years or something. And somebody like straight up asked him and he was like, yeah, they wrote the contract really well. I can't get out of it.
Kevin Spisak: Okay. What about what Brooks's ran up?
Dominic Colangelo: What if they go bankrupt?
Matthew Zampello: Brooks's ran out. yeah, Brooks's I think ran out or he bought himself out of the contract. can't remember.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, well, isn't their funding like done at the end of the year? So doesn't that kind of like end the funding, you know, of the live tour?
Matthew Zampello: But rumors are that John Rahm was paid upfront for his contract. like his contracts worth like 300 million. So like, even if the live funding, even if the live funding stops, he was technically already paid for his contract. So they like own him in the contract. Like it's not like an eye. That's the rumors.
Kevin Spisak: ⁓ little signing bonus. Yikes.
Dominic Colangelo: Matt's joke is that he's being hailed hostage.
Matthew Zampello: That's right.
Kevin Spisak: It kind of seemed that way, I guess.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: He does not look happy in his interviews, but no I think I mean, you know, he if when he gets hot he's one of the best players in the world. It's just you know, he's used to playing against Bubba Watson who's not anymore. Sorry.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. So he's using the hundred dollar bills to wipe away his tears. He's playing professional golf with three hundred million dollars in the bank. think he'll live.
Dominic Colangelo: Enjoy cold cuts.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: Exactly.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: I was gonna he could do something very funny and just fun live golf. Just keep everyone on their contract. If I'm here, you're staying with me.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, keep the throw.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, everybody's gonna be, if I'm going down years, you're going down with me, so. Boys, I'm excited for this week. I think it's gonna be great week. love Major Championship golf. It's like, unlike, I have a perfectly scheduled tee time on Sunday, 740, ready to lock in in the afternoon.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, you're going to have to give us a nice update on Friday because Dom and going deep sea fishing. And we will be very far from cell service. So we will not know what's going on on Friday.
Dominic Colangelo: That's nice. Kevin and I are going to be cuddling around that time. Well, we can trip.
Matthew Zampello: Nice. I like it.
Dominic Colangelo: Well, that's Claude for a recap.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.
Dominic Colangelo: One last thing before we go, we didn't mention it, but Rory McElroy, is he gonna be able to work past this devastating injury? He got a blister on his little toesies today. The toesies. He like had his shoe off on one of the T-boxes and stopped his practice round. And then he, I don't know if this was a joke or not, but he missed the champions dinner. So I don't know if that's.
Kevin Spisak: Not the tootsies.
Dominic Colangelo: I know if it's because of that or if it was just someone kinda talking mess, but I don't know. mean, if you can't walk, if it hurts that bad, who knows?
Matthew Zampello: I'm sure they have to have some sort of treatment for it. Not a good look for Nike shoes.
Kevin Spisak: get him into some quality shoes.
Dominic Colangelo: I know, that's what I was gonna say.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, remember when Tiger wore the foot joys when he was coming back? What if Rory shows up in some nice foot joys? FJ premieres.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Ooh. Yeah. ⁓
Dominic Colangelo: There you go. Then it'd be way too expensive for me.
Matthew Zampello: Did you see the video of Xander Shofley? They were like asking about the Champions Dinner and they were like, what was, how was this meal compared to your meal or something that you did last year? Like how was Scotty's meal or Scotty's menu compared to your menu? And Xander goes, I don't even remember what I picked last year. He's such a, he's such a wet, speaking of wet paper bags, I feel like Xander is the biggest wet paper.
Kevin Spisak: Jeez.
Matthew Zampello: Great golfer, personality, wet paper bag.
Kevin Spisak: Totally.
Dominic Colangelo: This is a reporter's nightmare. Just never answers the way they want it to.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, yeah, that's all I got. think it's gonna, know, rough looks up, greens look fast, so it's gonna be a fun week.
Dominic Colangelo: Weather looks decent for the weekend. So hopefully you don't have any like delays and kind of other worldly kind of factors that come into play. it should just be some guys playing golf. Should be pretty fun. Let's hope Ricky wins it.
Matthew Zampello: I would go, it would be one of my favorite majors of all time if Ricky pulls it out, I'd be so pumped.
Dominic Colangelo: If Ricky wins, how about we all just get one for our one and ends?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, that works.
Matthew Zampello: No.
Dominic Colangelo: Matt hates it, Kevin loves it, I'm in.
Matthew Zampello: I'm coming back. coming back. I still I stand by I think Dom I think by the end of the season Dom might be a professional gambler.
Dominic Colangelo: We got to put it to the test. Yeah, Kevin, we have to get an update a little bit later on how your one and done's are going for your money round. ⁓ really? ⁓ no.
Kevin Spisak: Ha
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: terrible. ⁓ so bad. I am not near the top.
Dominic Colangelo: Oh, and by the way, last thing, already said that before, but majors, one and duns are double. So whatever the placement is, we're multiplying by two and we'll be good to go. yeah, PGA championship. We're excited. Eronomic, eronomink, the mink, whatever you want to call it. It's going to be a great week. We might be doing a 36-hole recap. Actually, no, we'll be full on match party.
Matthew Zampello: Hmm. You guys will be in on you guys will be on a boat man.
Dominic Colangelo: I'm on a boat. Maybe you can do it for us, but all right.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, I'll do. I'll be posting, you know, nightly recaps on our social media is kind of giving my quick thoughts on the day's events. So and you know what? I think we should ask you guys to give yourselves a you guys should film a together on the boat recap of of I'll give you quick notes and then you guys react to them on the boat. Many years.
Dominic Colangelo: I love it.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, we got to get some like big fish monster and just like hold it up. Give a recap from the fish.
Matthew Zampello: You guys should you guys should redo ⁓ that tiger picture where he was in a where he had the big fish. That like it's like a famous tiger photo.
Dominic Colangelo: We'll do that. Yeah, I'll look it up. We'll do it.
Kevin Spisak: I I know that one. ⁓ How about when Jameis Winston interviewed the fish after he was getting caught?
Matthew Zampello: Okay, yeah, do that one for sure. All right.
Dominic Colangelo: Bad news, Kevin, we gotta go shirtless to do the tiger pick.
Kevin Spisak: ⁓ shit.
Matthew Zampello: All right, we're getting off track. Everybody have a great PGA Championship week. Shout out to our listeners, except for user 23458 that keeps commenting on our TikToks, mean things. otherwise, hope everybody has a great week.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Ha ha ha.
Dominic Colangelo: Love you.
