Dominic: All right, hello and welcome back to another edition of Under the Covers, golf podcasts where deep dive each week and the latest PGA Tour winners bag. Haven't done that full intro in a while. We are your hosts. My name is Dominic. Kevin, how are you doing today?
Kevin Spisak: Doing great, a little cooler in Saint Louis, but it's about to get hot with the BMW Championship coming to town.
Dominic: yeah, it's gonna be fun to talk about that. We also have Matt with us joining today. What's going on, Matt?
Chief Wedge Officer: Hey Dom, thanks for having me. I really appreciate it. Kevin, it's gonna be less hot because Jordan Speith is not in St. Louis this weekend.
Kevin Spisak: True, that's true. Yeah. I wasn't really referring to the temperature more the play, but that's a good point that it it's not not as hot.
Dominic: He had a chance though. He was one of the Bumble boys, had a shot.
Chief Wedge Officer: Except when he sculled one yeah into the bunker face. that was not good.
Dominic: And he, that should not have happened, I feel like.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, the butt that was that I think even like Johnson Magnus was like, Yeah, that that lip's not in not in play. He hits the lip.
Dominic: Dude, there was an announcer, he was a, it was typically when Scotty was on. wanna say he was the field guy following Scotty on Sunday. He was letting it rip. I don't know if you were listening at all, but he had some hilarious quips that were like brutal. You're like, my gosh. I can't believe you're still saying that.
Chief Wedge Officer: The Johnson Wagner? It might have been gone.
Dominic: Maybe, I'm not sure, but anyways.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Dom you cursed you cursed Jordan when you texted after Thursday saying Jordan Speath is so back. You cursed him.
Dominic: I know I should have done that. The world wanted it to happen. But hey, we have Ricky Fowler. We'll take that, Ricky and Justin. Two of the three of the Hardy Boys.
Chief Wedge Officer: Mm.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Pat pass on Justin.
Dominic: That's fair, that's fair. Maybe he gets more pastel pants going on. But anyways, we're here to talk about the FedEx Jude FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis. A bit of a scorcher is what we were learning. The announcers couldn't stop talking about the sweat on everybody's back, which like there's so many more things to talk about. But our winner was Scotty Scheffler, which On our podcast, we have not been able to talk about him because he had won the Amex tournament back in January and we had started this for the Farmers Insurance Open. So this is our first time to talk about Scotty as a winner, to get all up under the covers. So this will be fun.
Chief Wedge Officer: The the podcast was just a f you know, just an idea in somebody's head and you know
Kevin Spisak: Mm.
Dominic: And now we're here and now we're here. So Scotty, he had a great weekend, started with a 68, went with a kind of the course record for 61, 68, 66 for finishing total of 17 under par. Like we said, it's a second win for Scotty this year. There are some pretty fun stats being thrown around just because it's Scotty and there's so much content around him. So this is his 11th consecutive win. after having the 54 hole lead, which is just bonkers. feel like, would y'all say he's our generation's tiger? I feel like he's still in our generation technically, but we're kind of on the back end. Just like consistent
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Chief Wedge Officer: At this
Dominic: dominance.
Chief Wedge Officer: We we did this for Jordan Speed seven years ago, eight years ago.
Dominic: Did we?
Kevin Spisak: And we did it for Rory before that.
Chief Wedge Officer: Nobody I don't think is gonna have the longevity that Tiger had where like Tom Tiger was dumb. Ten full years.
Dominic: Yeah. Which is just wild. Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: anyways, the, the 54 hole lead, I'm sure tiger's number is insanely larger, but, he, like I said, he tied the course record at TPC Southwind. he's now had four rounds of 61 or better on the PGA tour. And I just feel like it's there's, there's been a lot of talk about Scotty. We say it every week. that it's just funny that everyone says he's been struggling, even though he's consistently just hitting top tens every week. And then there's also the bunch leaderboard conversation that Rory was famously talking about, how he hated. And this week we kind of had a standout winner. You know, it bunched after him. But I feel like it's totally fine whenever Scottie's doing it, because all is right in the world when Scottie's winning. I don't know, what do you all think?
Chief Wedge Officer: I well, first of all, I feel like I looked at the leaderboard on Saturday night and I was like, Sam Burns and Sung J are in second. They're not gonna win.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Chief Wedge Officer: I was like it was like, yeah.
Dominic: death taxes and them not winning.
Chief Wedge Officer: I was like, Of course, of course Scotty's gonna win 'cause you have two people that just don't close. I think the craziest stat I saw this weekend on Scotty Schepler was Scotty's won twenty one times now, on tour. Tigers won eighty, I guess, right? and Scotty's about to pass him in career earnings. That's how much the
Kevin Spisak: wow.
Chief Wedge Officer: that's how much
Dominic: Whoa.
Chief Wedge Officer: the PGA tour purses have inflated since when Tiger is
Kevin Spisak: Jeez.
Chief Wedge Officer: winning versus Scotty's winning. I think that's freaking crazy. Just that that was
Dominic: That's insane.
Chief Wedge Officer: my big takeaway from this weekend is like Holy crap, these guys are making so much money.
Kevin Spisak: Damn, good for Scotty.
Dominic: Whoa.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. It's it's unreal that he could win, you know, a a FedEx Cup playoff event by eight strokes, like just be that much better than everyone in the field. That just like blows my mind so much. You know, everyone else, the entire rest of the leaderboard is bunched up in some fashion, you know, separated by a handful of strokes between, you know, twenty or thirty positions. You know, but to win by eight is so massive. Yeah. Impressive.
Dominic: against the best 70 of the year too.
Chief Wedge Officer: I feel like going back on Sung J I feel like if you've never won on the PJ Tour, you're not you should not be qualified for the championship division in twenty twenty eight.
Dominic: don't know, that's a bit.
Kevin Spisak: How many yeah, I'd I'd have to see a list of like who hasn't won that who would get knocked off.
Dominic: I mean, Tommy would barely make it then. He deserves to be in the championship.
Chief Wedge Officer: I feel like if you haven't w like there needs to be some sort of qualify.
Dominic: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: That's an interesting take.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: don't hate it. mean, should be like, mean, top 90 seems like it's pretty legit. I'm assuming, it, do you know? I can't remember. Is it like FedEx points? Is it yearly or is it world ranking or it's the past two years?
Chief Wedge Officer: It's it's a yearly thing.
Dominic: Okay, gotcha.
Chief Wedge Officer: Sung J M's last one was the Shiner's Tri Shiner's Children's Open in twenty twenty two.
Dominic: That was last win. wow.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, so doesn't count.
Dominic: We should track how many close calls he's had, because there's been a lot.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: I won the Honda Classic in twenty twenty. Okay, maybe maybe I was that was a bad take. But I still believe if you done if
Kevin Spisak: Ha ha
Chief Wedge Officer: you haven't won on the PGA Tour and you're in the championship division, you need to you need to you need to validate.
Kevin Spisak: Dom bat
Dominic: So then.
Kevin Spisak: on us that we weren't, you know, like Matt Encyclopedias just being able to reel off his two wins that he had.
Dominic: But then what about, so if somebody wins in your eyes, does that automatically qualify them?
Chief Wedge Officer: No, it's just if you've won you you can't you can't be a top
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: twenty you can't just get a bunch of top twenties and get in the and and and and get in the championship to this.
Dominic: Okay, okay, interesting, interesting. But then there'd only be 30 people in the championship series.
Chief Wedge Officer: No, no, no. I'm saying like if you've if you've been on the PJ tour for five years, you've never won, but you just rack up top twenty after top twenty.
Dominic: Yeah, okay.
Chief Wedge Officer: As well. I don't know. Maybe it's I'd take. But we can we'll all
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, we'll we we
Dominic: or workshop it.
Kevin Spisak: let let's have let's have the the data team put together some stats on it on that for us and we'll we'll report back on it.
Dominic: Yeah, Jimmy, pull that up for us. All right, beautiful. Well, I think that's a good time for us to go into. Kevin, why don't you take us through what does Scotty have under the covers?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. so like Don mentioned, you know, he he had already won this year, but that was before our little baby podcast had had been born. So we didn't cover his bag. You know, at the time he would have had the QI ten driver in the bag as he did for most of the season. but he switched to the QI four D eight degree driver. I can hear the Roomba going upstairs again, so hopefully you guys cannot hear that. his shaft is the Ventus Black 7X tipped one inch. So that is one stout boy. he's got it's it's really nice because it's Scotty and he is, you know, such a big name. Like there's a lot of like in-depth analysis on his gloves, so we've been able to find out more than we would about other people. So we can actually see like, you know, the weight position. He's got 13 gram weight in the toe, 10 in the heel. and then the rear weights four grams in the toe hand heel. So a little bit heavier in the toe. but then he he goes to the trusty QI 10 on the three wood with the Ventus Black 8X. so consistent with the Ventus Black 7X then goes 8X, driver three wood. And then Scotty is definitely changed out throughout time, you know, the longer clubs in his bag. but currently he's got a three and a four iron with the Srixon ZU 85 for once we get into his irons. And then Tailor made P7 TWs, which I read this week that they're gonna be coming out with like they're gonna a for sale Scotty edition of the TWs and they're gonna like rename them. so that'll be pretty cool. Be interesting to see when that those actually come out, if there's anything different. on those than the T W's and that would kinda answer our season long question of is the T W or are the T Ws you can buy on Taylor Maid's website the ones that Scotty actually plays? yeah
Dominic: the potential for the SS. That'd be a pretty cool club to have. The P7SS
Kevin Spisak: What?
Dominic: or whatever they want to call it.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: I like that.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. I if they're named that, we gotta buy Just like you gotta buy Wyndham Clark's butter for the millionth time.
Dominic: it'll happen, it'll happen.
Chief Wedge Officer: Think they can name him SS Dom.
Dominic: Huh?
Chief Wedge Officer: I don't think they can name the SS 'cause that was the primary that was like the or that was like the paramilitary organization of the Nazi of Nazi Germany.
Dominic: Yeah, but it's also like a Camaro. Like a car.
Kevin Spisak: It's like the yeah. Yeah, the super sport.
Chief Wedge Officer: I guess Yeah, I guess you're right.
Kevin Spisak: Whoa, Matt.
Dominic: But I have good...
Chief Wedge Officer: I just I just literally I was like think 'cause like that f somehow reminded me, but you're right. You you get the the Camaro did it so I
Dominic: If there's a potential for some Nazi propaganda, we might need to change that up.
Chief Wedge Officer: I just that was like the first thing that popped in my mind and the first thing I just went and Googled the S S 'cause you said it and that was the first thing that came up and the Camaro did not come up first, so
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, 'cause nobody
Dominic: That's fair.
Kevin Spisak: refers to it as DSS. Like
Dominic: You
Kevin Spisak: Camaro S S or I my brain went to like a boat, you know, like the USS,
Chief Wedge Officer: yeah.
Kevin Spisak: blah blah blah, you know.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Dominic: We all have our priorities.
Chief Wedge Officer: Carry on.
Kevin Spisak: The USS Bodiemic boat face. yeah.
Dominic: So I actually have a question for you Kevin. the three iron, four iron, they're a specific Srixon ZU. But then it's interesting with his shafts because he has the nip on for the three iron, but then his four matches everything else. what, like is it that much different hitting a three iron and a four iron? Like why would he switch just that one?
Kevin Spisak: Some sort of flight characteristic. It's it's like a hybrid shaft. so my I don't I don't know a ton about this, you know, hybrid prototype. probably not a a ton of good info on it, but my guess is that it would fly a little higher, like launch wise, than what he's got in the four iron. Wha what do
Dominic: Okay.
Kevin Spisak: you think, Matt? Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, he probably I mean, I think like the three and the four iron in his Srixan, he switches in and out. Like I think he kinda probably like on the course, like and I don't know if they know exactly which one he played, this week, but like I think normally like I think he's just probably just looking for something. I think the three iron might be a little bit more of a stinger like club where he's like trying to hit like a certain stinger off the T or something where he's trying to keep it low and and whatever. But yeah, he's played that Srixon Club for years, Kevin. Like he can't get that thing out of his bag. He must just really like the way it launches or something.
Dominic: Thanks.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I know he's he's tested out some seven woods throughout the years and different configurations in the bag. but yeah, the ZUs are in there.
Dominic: Have y'all tried the Nippon shafts?
Kevin Spisak: Some of them,
Chief Wedge Officer: I haven't
Kevin Spisak: not not this by any means, but
Dominic: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: I have nippon in my irons but not this hybrid prototype thing.
Dominic: I didn't know that. Okay.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Which ones do you have? I I know we we did a what's in are under the covers for Matt, but I don't recall.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, I have the Modus one twenty X, just like the the standard ones. But I actually have a set of back here that I in that I commandeered the other day, of KDS Tor one twenty S. that I've been kinda just like I have just a blank set here, so maybe one one of the days I'll I'll do some tinkering.
Kevin Spisak: Nice. Yeah.
Dominic: There you go, I like that.
Kevin Spisak: when I did my Mizuno fitting, what the top shaft option was the nippon one fifteen X's for me. And I I
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: liked those, but just never pulled the trigger on buying
Chief Wedge Officer: They come standard with Mizuno irons, so if you're a Mizuno if you're a Mizuno boy,
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: you don't pay an upcharge for for nippins.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: I I those to be my next irons.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I I told my member guest partner Henry that when he buys a set of blades, I'll buy a set of blades. And he said he would buy them if he breaks eighty five and passes his next exam for for work. So we'll see if that happens. No, no, he'll buy his.
Dominic: He'll buy them for you.
Kevin Spisak: And then out of solidarity for my partner, I gotta buy him too. That's just how it works.
Dominic: Those exams are no joke.
Chief Wedge Officer: I've got a set of
Dominic: Good luck, Henry.
Chief Wedge Officer: set of Nike blades back here. You can t you ca I'll bring one up, you can borrow and you'll quickly not want to buy blades. yeah, crap, you're
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Play right handed. I I played one round with title list MBs and thought I was gonna play like Atrocious just because it was like in my head how hard they were gonna be to hit and I actually played really well with them.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, some people say they're not as bad as people say.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. But real quick tangent and then we'll get back to Scotty. But I was having this discussion last week about like blades versus like, you know, game improvement irons. And it's basically like, you know, game improvement irons are meant for like maximum distance across the face. So if you like mishit it and it's going way right, it's got the power to keep going even further right, you know, where the blade you're gonna like lose a lot of distance. So, you know, it it's kind of a trade-off on you know, taking the miss hit, but you know, being okay with it being short, you know, or some more forgiveness, but who knows where it's going. You know, I it depends on the player. But
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: anywho, let's get back to Scotty. so Taylor made P7 TWs as we mentioned. five through pitching wood, pitching wood, pitching wedge.
Dominic: You
Kevin Spisak: pitching wood's probably like one of those golf channel like 2 a.m. infomercials. any
Dominic: It's where they bend a 60 degree to a three wood.
Kevin Spisak: right. dynamic gold, tour issue X100s. I've seen those a bunch of times this year. The wedges kind of caught me by surprise that he's playing some older models. So the Voke SM8 50 F grind. 56 F grind bent to a fifty-five and then an SM960 T grind. and then his wedge shafts are the dynamic gold S400s. So a little softer on the wedges, but interesting that he's playing, you know, we're already we're on the SM11s now, and he's got SM eight and SM9. That T grind is no joke. I would be terrible with it, but good for Scotty for being a baller.
Chief Wedge Officer: I think I'm going tea grind.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: I'm fed up with the K star. Yeah. So if somebody
Dominic: Really? What's happening?
Kevin Spisak: When you put it in the bag.
Chief Wedge Officer: if some well I guess not Kevin, but i I might be my K star might be up for up for sale. Yeah. I think
Kevin Spisak: give it to Dom. Dom, you'd love the K star.
Dominic: fun. Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: honestly it might work well in the soft conditions you have up there, to be honest. I think the tea grind's better for just firm turf and I just think the turf down here is so firm that it it would be better.
Dominic: Okay.
Chief Wedge Officer: So
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. This might be like n next weekend when you guys are in town, this might be one of the like firmest points of the season. We've had so much freaking rain all year. But I think we're gonna get a little dry spell here. So it should be nice for us next weekend. so moving along here, his putter has been the talk of the town for how many years? you know, with with some of the you know, played Scotty for a long time. put a Logan Olson in the bag for a little bit, went to Spider, tried out the milled face, and then went to the pure roll insert and has been you know, stuck with that for quite a while. so Spider Tour X, thirty five and a half inches. He's got the plumber's neck, true path with a full line, three degrees loft, pure roll insert. it it I Matt, I know you've mentioned this in prior episodes, but it is very cool that you can go to Taylor Maid's website and buy exactly the carbon copy of Scotty Shuffler's putter. very cool to be able to get that in your hands. and his his golf pride pro only grip is not the most common grip on the face of the earth, but Scotty's been playing it for a while, so pretty cool.
Chief Wedge Officer: I feel like it's popular.
Kevin Spisak: What's that?
Chief Wedge Officer: It's made the pro only grip more popular. from last my I think
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, yeah, definitely. Okay. go for it.
Chief Wedge Officer: my buddy the scooter boy, he bought a sp My Spider. so we're currently working out problems in our friendship because of that, but it's a whole it's a thing. but yeah, he he just bought it because he's like it's obviously great and I want to try it. So we just did like a MySpire X, whatever. Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Nice.
Dominic: Wait, so my spider is the kind of spider? It's not your spider?
Chief Wedge Officer: It's like a you can like customize
Kevin Spisak: That it's it's like
Chief Wedge Officer: any spider.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: Okay, I was gonna say did you have multiple spiders cuz you sold me yours I was very confused by the terminology there
Kevin Spisak: It's like Nike ID for
Chief Wedge Officer: I was literally Kevin, I was gonna say it's like Nike ID. Do you remember that? Does
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: That's awesome. I didn't know that.
Chief Wedge Officer: Nike ID still exist?
Kevin Spisak: I don't think they call it that anymore, but
Dominic: Mm-hmm.
Kevin Spisak: but yeah, you can you can get custom colors.
Chief Wedge Officer: yeah, you can do Nike ID still.
Dominic: Dude, I remember making those.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: just put, like, you put one, your first name on one, last name on the other. It's too many letters, and then you just start making random
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: stuff, even though you know you're never gonna buy them in your life. man.
Kevin Spisak: yeah. I easily made fifteen hundred, you know, custom Nike ID shoes over the years. That was a good time.
Chief Wedge Officer: That's w I didn't know that website still existed. I remember that was a sick website back then.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: yeah.
Kevin Spisak: last but not least, we're we're back again with the title as Pro B One ball on the tracker. So that is what's in Mr. Scheffler's world number one golf bag.
Dominic: I love his bag. It's pretty straightforward. Not many people are only gaming the driver three wood and then all irons. I think there was a couple. I don't remember who else it was, but it might've even been in Scotland or across the pond where it makes sense. But anyways, yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: You just gotta know that there's some Taylor made executive out there that's so happy he finally put the QI forty in.
Dominic: Absolutely.
Chief Wedge Officer: They've been trying to get into that for all year long, it feels like.
Dominic: Do know exactly when it happened? It was this week? okay.
Chief Wedge Officer: This week. He put it in this week. Yeah. Yeah.
Dominic: Yeah, they're rubbing their hands. They're getting ready for all the money to pile in.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, for sure.
Dominic: The TBC Southwind, like we said, hot day. Very interesting play out of some of these guys. Ludwig had a 74 on Saturday. Like we said, Spieth had his own struggles, but that's kind of every week. Christopher Rytan, he was outside of the top 50 in every single strokes game category, which doesn't seem like it's normal play out of him. I don't know if it's a... This is the, quote, playoffs and it's kind of a lot of pressure or if it just wasn't as weak, but that one definitely surprised me. TBC Southwind has the most balls in the water than any other course. Almost a thousand more than TBC Sawgrass. I don't know if y'all saw that stat.
Kevin Spisak: Thanks.
Chief Wedge Officer: The course looks z zero amount of fun. It just looks
Dominic: Yeah. There's it's.
Chief Wedge Officer: like a butt.
Dominic: There's too much going on.
Chief Wedge Officer: it did you guys see the Rory stuff this week? He just looked absolutely not wanting to be there.
Dominic: Matt, I was gonna bring that up because one, I don't think I've ever seen Rory play that bad. He was partying too hard in Ibiza the whole time. Dude,
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: You thank you for pronouncing it quickly.
Dominic: so Bree and I both, we didn't notice it for a while, but then on Sunday, we're just like, have you seen him wear looser fitting clothes than he is right now? Like,
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: I don't know if it's, he's getting a little frumpy. or if he's too
Kevin Spisak: Ha ha.
Dominic: skinny from partying the whole time and didn't actually like refuel. It looked weird. Like it kind of, you know, debunks your theory, Matt, of if Rory wears looser clothes, he wins 14 majors.
Chief Wedge Officer: True. It's very true. What was I gonna I was gonna t Dumb, I just came up with a good the the whole fist bump for your fantasy football penalties. you should make whoever
Dominic: let's hear it.
Chief Wedge Officer: you should make someone watch all of the episodes of Jersey Shore in like a weekend.
Dominic: That's not a punishment for some people,
Chief Wedge Officer: Ha
Dominic: man.
Chief Wedge Officer: ha ha.
Dominic: man, but Rory stunk this weekend, dude. It was, it was insane. Like he's shanking balls in the water. Like he's us. Like it was, it was very strange.
Chief Wedge Officer: And then his interview was like, Yeah, you know, I had a conversation with Brian Rollap and he told me it's important to be here, so I'm here. And then they were like
Dominic: I just got off the phone with President Trump.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. And then he was like, Yeah, I'm gonna try to get some good practice in this week, but it's also a hundred degrees, so I'm not gonna practice very much. It was
Dominic: Yeah, I saw I watched an old interview The the background was the open symbol. So it must have been a little bit ago But he was essentially saying someone said what do you feel about the state of the PGA tour right now? Like are you excited about it? He's like, yeah, Mean, you know, I've been more locked in some years some years I'm not and he essentially just talked mess about the playoff scenario. He's like everything's changing the tour but like at this point And I completely forgot about this. He's like, if there's no benefit to being higher up on the leaderboard in the top 30 for the tour championship, then why do need to care about these other two tournaments? I was like, that's a great point. I forgot that they took
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Yeah.
Dominic: away the strokes.
Chief Wedge Officer: They're they're giving away a hundred and eighty million dollars this week in the next two weeks.
Dominic: my gosh, did it get that high?
Chief Wedge Officer: This is a p this is a ploy to give away money to the best players in the world.
Dominic: It is weird doing it for two more years knowing that it's gonna be over.
Chief Wedge Officer: This year or next year, yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Dominic: Yeah,
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: that's gnarly, dude.
Chief Wedge Officer: There's this is not a real playoff. It's just a way that the the PGA tour can reward Rory and Scotty for playing. Like and
Dominic: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: without just
Kevin Spisak: And not going to live.
Chief Wedge Officer: without just handing them money.
Dominic: Mm-hmm. Which, mean, John Rahm
Kevin Spisak: Yep. My
Dominic: is big in the news now.
Chief Wedge Officer: Gosh.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: What are you gonna say, Kevin?
Kevin Spisak: I was gonna say my my lefty boy Matt McCarty made the top fifty by the skin of his teeth, shooting plus seven in in this event and finishing fiftieth in the FedEx Cup.
Dominic: Whoa.
Kevin Spisak: So
Dominic: That's crazy, I didn't
Chief Wedge Officer: He was fifty.
Dominic: catch that one.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: goodness. Yeah, there wasn't a I feel like there wasn't too much like, like back and forth, like the only three names that I really heard about that were on the bubble were Keith Mitchell, Jordan, and then like you just said just now was McCarty. So I don't know that's just like, kind of a byproduct of the schedule and setup of the playoffs or what but kind of an interesting finish here
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: to the end of the year.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, there are a few people who dropped off. Max Homa, Matt's boy, Pearson Cootie, Corey
Chief Wedge Officer: Mm.
Kevin Spisak: Connors, they were all in the fifties, you know, just narrowly missed.
Dominic: Okay, gotcha gotcha
Chief Wedge Officer: Za Heath forty six, Justin Thomas forty four. Rio hits at Sune forty five.
Dominic: weekend.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Dominic: I think that's kind all that I had about the tournament. mean, there wasn't too much to talk about, I feel like.
Chief Wedge Officer: It was very quiet.
Dominic: Yeah, very quiet. I think this week will be, I think, bit more interesting. Belle Reeve is... There's some history there, I feel like. I was just housing some highlights. like Tiger Woods ripping it in 2018.
Chief Wedge Officer: Right.
Dominic: I think we'll get to more of a preview later. But Matt, did you want to go through and kind of give some news on like a little recap on the US amateur?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. one of my favorite events of the year, I would put it directly below the majors, for sure for like favorite events. It is it's so c
Kevin Spisak: The players in that.
Chief Wedge Officer: it's above the players, better than the players.
Kevin Spisak: Okay.
Dominic: Good catch, good catch.
Chief Wedge Officer: It is it's just such a cool event because they go to some of like the the the golf courses that can not really host majors anymore, although Marion is hosting this open in twenty thirty. but like it's usually like smaller properties, really historic golf courses. and what I love about it is like it's match play still, so you get to kind of see like that mono imano kind of thing. But Jack Whaley the Englishman beat Jay Lang Jr. and I love how the the final match is thirty-six holes. I always think that's super cool. It's all day golf all day final match.
Dominic: Yeah. I like that.
Chief Wedge Officer: so yeah, but Jack Whaley, Florida State, pretty cool. He he played at Dalton State, was an NAIA golfer for like two or three years, and then he got really good and then transferred to Florida State and now won the USAM, which is like a crazy he went from basically lower than D three to like on top of the amateur game, which is sick. if you saw Jay Jay Lang Junior's swing all week, he's a freaking crazy golf wing. Feels like he doesn't even swing it.
Dominic: You
Chief Wedge Officer: but he was he was hitting some rippers. Super good putter. but yeah, I mean Marion was was the star of the show. I'm super excited for the US open there. The rough was super long. It was putting the guys in a blender, it felt like all week of just like It was it looked so hard. but yeah, I feel like the US amateur is just one of the things that golf still does right. Like you had people following them every hole in the fairway right behind them. Like it felt like very old school golf, which I loved. And it was on all Sunday afternoon. It was fantastic.
Dominic: Was that where Shipley won and they were following him around when he was at Ohio State?
Chief Wedge Officer: Can't remember if Shipley won US amateur.
Dominic: feel like I remember a clip where he was hitting shots and people were like five feet away from him, cheering him on.
Chief Wedge Officer: It was probably in like the maybe the quarter finals or something.
Dominic: okay, gotcha.
Chief Wedge Officer: 'Cause they do it like all week long. I finished runner up in twenty twenty three.
Dominic: Okay.
Chief Wedge Officer: That's why Yeah, so he was in the f championship match. Yeah.
Dominic: Mm-hmm. Nice.
Kevin Spisak: Who did he lose to?
Chief Wedge Officer: Nick Dunlap.
Kevin Spisak: all right.
Dominic: okay. Nice.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. but yeah, I mean
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: I just I I'm I'm the US ameter is like I tried to qualify a couple of times back in my really competitive playing days and never I got close one time coming down like the the final nine holes. Then the qualifiers are thirty six holes. You have to do thirty six hole qualifying in one day. and it's just it's a beating, but it it would be one of like the coolest events to play in. But it's a grueling event, six days of golf straight.
Dominic: That's a lot.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: a lot what what would you do to like keep your body in good shape for that
Chief Wedge Officer: Well, you don't play so the first two rounds are are just stroke play qualifying eighteen eighteen. And then the next couple days are match play. And you don't play like all the holes sometimes in match play too. So you're not playing like a full eighteen some days. but honestly you just have to like I mean you just have to do you just have to rest and recover. Like you those guys are so good at like knowing like you know, doing ice baths and like all that Whatever that thing is where the it's like the where you put your legs into it.
Kevin Spisak: yeah. Yeah, I know what you're talking about.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, yeah. so
Dominic: yeah, the Nordic or whatever.
Chief Wedge Officer: Nordic, yeah, yeah. They're all they all have that stuff, so they they recover. but I just think it's yeah, it's just it it's always you get some sometimes you get some Cinderella stories there and there was a couple guys from like Pennsylvania that were like that went really far that were like pretty low ranked amateurs and stuff. So just cool event all year round. It's it's one of the good things in golf still that is not just all about like Again, we just talked about the FedEx Cup just being like kind of just a walk around with these guys to hand them money. This is actually like Jack Whaley gets to play in the US Open at Pebble Beach next year, the U the Open at St Andrews, the Walker Cup this year, at Lahinch in Ireland, and I think he gets to play it gets and they the but they both get to play in the Masters. Like that's sick.
Dominic: That was a fun moment, hugging his dad.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Dominic: Go to the masters. That's sick, dude.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm. That's awesome.
Dominic: Yeah. I'll have to pay more attention next year to the Yosamite. I should have been more locked in there.
Chief Wedge Officer: You should have went, what was it last year? Last year it was that Hazel team too. Yeah.
Dominic: Yeah, it was. I wanted to go. My brother-in-law's dad, he usually volunteers. So he was doing like, he was the guy with the scorecard, like the poll. And I was like, dude, I gotta get on that. That'd be fun. Yeah, I wanted to go
Chief Wedge Officer: Let's see what this
Dominic: because Evan Thompson, YouTube guy, I think he played, I think he missed it. He missed out. He had to have I think I mean it's all over his Instagram, but yeah I wanted to watch him but ended up not but hopefully it comes back pretty soon
Chief Wedge Officer: So twenty twenty seven is in Oak Hill, which is which is in Rochester, New York.
Dominic: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Twenty twenty eight is in Whistling is that Whistling Straits, which is which would be sick.
Kevin Spisak: That'd be awesome.
Dominic: UTC trip, it was like straights.
Chief Wedge Officer: twenty twenty nine twenty twenty nine is Inverness. Twenty thirty is Atlanta Athletic Club. the honors course. Twenty thirty two is Bandon, which is awesome. Twenty thirty three is Chambers
Dominic: That'd be cool.
Chief Wedge Officer: Band. Like they get so many good plates, so many good spots.
Dominic: Dang. Yeah, be nice.
Chief Wedge Officer: Well they got a they got abandon
Kevin Spisak: And to start practicing.
Chief Wedge Officer: they got abandoned a lot.
Dominic: Is it always
Chief Wedge Officer: What's
Dominic: a Dunes course?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, that's their turn, of course.
Dominic: okay, gotcha.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yep.
Dominic: That's cool. Anything else on the US hamburger mat?
Chief Wedge Officer: no. I think I think that covers it. You know, that I'm glad they didn't we didn't have some ex pro winning the US amateur. That's a whole other discussion.
Dominic: that happen?
Chief Wedge Officer: Well, recently pros that like didn't make a ton of money can like ask for their amateur status.
Dominic: weird. I don't like that.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. It's a it's kinda yeah, it's kinda bad. It's kinda bad news.
Dominic: Yeah. So last week we went into swing weights quite a bit. We went into scooter boys, squing weight and that prompted recent AWL Henry, another shout out for the kid. He was saying that we should do that again because he liked it a lot. So I don't deserve a what's in the bag just yet. I need to, I need to get my skill a little bit better and a little more dialed with actually knowing what clubs I'm using. So I think a good way to start is to fix my bag. So Kevin, would you wanna take it away and see what you're seeing? I'll throw it up on the screen, some under scooter boy setup. So we'll be looking at my swing weight, shaft weight, how it's all calculated and stuff.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, that sounds great. yeah. How about I'll I'll throw out my thoughts and then Matt, feel free to counteract me or or you know agree or whatever, but we can have a debate on what what Dom should do. you know, I think the real point of this is to either make him make changes before the member guest or get in his head and just screw them all up. So
Dominic: Both are great ideas.
Chief Wedge Officer: Do you breathe interact?
Kevin Spisak: the The first things that are glaring that stand out is the swing weight on driver three wood, three hybrid, and seven wood. The se the seven wood particular. driver
Chief Wedge Officer: D
Kevin Spisak: we're just gonna round up. basically D five on the driver, D three, three wood, D five, three hybrid, D seven, seven wood. That is heavy. yeah, we we probably wanna get those all around D two, maybe like D three on the seven wood. yeah, I mean D
Chief Wedge Officer: Dom, I'm gonna go I'm gonna go out and think, do you hit your three with the best?
Dominic: No, I used to. I definitely used to before I changed my driver.
Kevin Spisak: I don't I don't know. I mean we obviously haven't played golf in a long time, like in person together, but man, the way you were roasting that three wood when Kenny got it for you in that it it makes sense why it's the only swing weight of those four that makes sense is because Kenny Riley at the Gimme Golf Club set you up.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Dominic: Yeah, so like, we talked about it, but my three wood ripped completely. Kenny hooked me up and then I was ripping that one. And then I want to say for a year and a half, I just never even took driver out because I was ripping a three wood so well. Like it would go, if I really got a hold of it, I did hit one that was like 290. Obviously that's not normal, but like if it was flying that far and straight, then why would I even need to get a driver? So then. Eventually we just matched that shaft with for my driver that you had got me Kevin. So then it's kind of like these both work. Let's see how it goes. But clearly if my because don't you want your driver to be a lower swing weight. So right now drivers.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, it usually gets heavier as the clubs get shorter.
Dominic: OK, so right now drivers at a D5 three was at a D3. So like.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Dominic: Is it the shaft that would need to change there or what would like kind of switch that swing weight?
Kevin Spisak: The a collection of things. the shaft has a contribution for sure. if you have a heavy grip or what weights you have in the head of the of the driver as well. You know, they they all play off of each other. You're you know,
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: you're for for anyone who doesn't know, you know, you're just trying to look at the total weight of the club, you know, versus the balance point, you know, to get your swing weight. So You can make a really, really light club in total weight, you know, be a D zero, like by where the balance point is, you know, that'd be unconventional. But you know, so it you're trying to play off of like having a a heavy enough club that you, you know, are in control and you know, swing weight is, you know, your perception of the weight. you know, so that helps with control and power and, you know, all the things. A lot a lot of accuracy goes into, you know, your swing weights being correct.
Dominic: Okay, and real quick, the way I did all this, it's on a website that I can put on here, but you get the weight of your club in grams, and then you put a little point, you can use your finger or like a little piece of metal, you find it where it balances, and then you measure the butt of the grip to that point, and then there's a calculation on the website to get the D whatever.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, professionals have swing weight scales that, you know, will will do that all for you, but you can do kind of a crude measurement, you know, of yourself. and it it's it's really close you know to what like a a swing weight scale would be. but yeah, we we should definitely get you in some lighter swing weights for for all your woods. Yeah, I I think you would probably like about a D two across the board, maybe D one for
Dominic: Okay.
Kevin Spisak: your driver.
Dominic: I will say I love my seven wood, is the which is funny because y'all were saying that's the most ridiculous swing weight.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Yeah, I I would
Chief Wedge Officer: I did.
Kevin Spisak: almost want you to maybe re measure that one.
Dominic: Yeah, I feel like it
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Dominic: probably wasn't the most accurate. So maybe if we have like a tool, but it's close.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, maybe put a put a disclaimer in the comments here if D seven's not accurate. But Matt, what do you think there?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, I would love I I mean, I think if we lowered your swing or your driver, you'd pick up club head speed and yardage off the T.
Dominic: you think?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, for sure. Swing the head faster. and lighten the driver overall. I mean, yeah, it feels like you need to Yeah, it feels like you should lighten a little bit, everything a little bit. But again, maybe maybe you do like to feel the head. Also, like I know you have L we have LPGA tour average on there. Dom, you're big dude. I think you swing it a little harder than LPGA tour average. So maybe
Dominic: Maybe.
Chief Wedge Officer: it's scooter boy's a little smaller than Dom, let's put that way. but yeah, I mean I think I think yeah, I would I would lighten everything if I were you. and start to play around with it. I think we can move some weight around on your driver, potentially and and take some weight out and see what happens. But
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, Dom's actually really small. He just sits super close to the camera, so he looks big.
Dominic: It's like holding up a fish.
Kevin Spisak: Exactly.
Dominic: So real quick before we get to irons,
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: in my driver, I have a four gram at the toe and a 10 gram at the heel. I have no idea, that was just like stock. Would that be an easy way to change all this?
Kevin Spisak: It would it would modify for sure if you if you changed those weights.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, you could order the low lighter weight calloway or something. Yeah.
Dominic: Hmm, maybe we should, maybe we can try that.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Yeah. Probably get them pretty quick.
Dominic: Okay. Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: and then irons, they these are all close enough that any discrepancy I would chalk up to just kind of a crude measurement. You know.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: They're you know, they're they're all light. They're light for you, you know, I would say. I think you would probably like to be around like a D three or D four. on all your irons. so heavier swing weight for your irons. And then wedges. You know, probably D four, D probably D four is my recommendation for your wedges as well. I mean D three irons, D four wedges is what I would say. what do you think, Matt?
Chief Wedge Officer: Did you buy your irons used or stocked? From Tailor Maid? Or from like a okay.
Dominic: Yeah. From Taylor, mate.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. Yeah. I I mean I would I would probably want to be a little heavier. I feel like you'd probably feel the head a little bit better on your irons. It's kind of important. I think irons are super important to kinda feel where the face is. So I think you like it a little heavier. And honestly, you could just play around with that one pretty easily. Just go buy a thing of lead tape and you could just throw a couple strips of lead tape on the back and just see what it feels like.
Dominic: Okay. I do have some more tape.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm. Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: So
Kevin Spisak: I saw a like a data analysis of like someone testing out a bunch of different swing weights. And, you know, again, like a higher swing weight feels heavier in your hands. So you think like I might swing it slower. But actually, like, you know, with with irons and things, you know, when you've got that heavy weight and you can feel kind of like your hands are like you know, dropping the weight, if that makes any sense. Like you can pick up a lot of power there, but the heavier weight keeps you in more control. So there's like, you know, you can test out all sorts of different weights and see which one fits for you. you know, but the the right combination would help with distance and dispersion for sure.
Dominic: I need that. Okay.
Kevin Spisak: You know, dispersion probably being the most important. You have plenty of distance.
Dominic: Did you catch my 52? I learned how old it actually is.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. any anyone with eyeballs can see how old that puppy is, but it's
Dominic: Yeah, that's true. That's true.
Kevin Spisak: it's it's still a beautiful club. It's and that one's
Chief Wedge Officer: I might bring pretty good.
Dominic: Hmm
Kevin Spisak: a that one's a good one. I I like the swing weight on that one.
Chief Wedge Officer: I'm gonna bring you a newer fifty eight fifty two.
Dominic: Yeah, okay. I got it from my grandpa's garage.
Chief Wedge Officer: I think that would be a collector's item. I think you should you should keep that one in the in the
Dominic: I know I probably should.
Chief Wedge Officer: office. Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Do you still have that lead tape that you were toying around with your broomstick putter? Yeah.
Dominic: yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Just slap some on there, recalculate, just pick pick a handful of clubs for your I don't pick two irons, your fifty six, put put some lead tape on there and see what you think.
Dominic: Okay. And then, so try to get it to a D2.
Kevin Spisak: I would say like D three on your irons, D four on your wedges. Be a good starting point.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. So usually like
Dominic: Okay, so I can work with that web.
Chief Wedge Officer: one strip of lead one inch of lead tape is like one swing weight, essentially.
Dominic: okay.
Chief Wedge Officer: That's kinda like the going measurement, essentially, so you can kinda say you can kinda play around with it. I'll bring my
Dominic: That'll be interesting.
Chief Wedge Officer: does gimme golf gimme golf of a swing weight machine in there. If not, I'll bring my little port.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, yeah, they do. Might
Dominic: Love it.
Kevin Spisak: might still be handy just while we're screwing around in the evenings to bring yours if you can fit it.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. Bring my little portable one.
Dominic: I'll hit the range this week.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. when when I went
Dominic: Cool, that's fun, I no idea.
Kevin Spisak: down this rabbit hole, you know, trying to get mine corrected, I was like, how did I not know about this before? Like this seems like the most important thing. I'd I'd say it's like, what shafts do you have? And then what's your swing weight is like the how you know, all the technology in your golf bag.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, for sure.
Dominic: It'll be fun. It'll be fun to test out. Nice, well thank you for doing that.
Kevin Spisak: You wanna get into the BMW championship?
Dominic: Heck yeah, man. Home course.
Chief Wedge Officer: Kevin, you're going. You us. What are you feeling?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I'm pumped. I'm going to it Friday and Saturday. Bel Reve Country Club, here in the St. Louis metro area. Bell Reve's got an interesting story. I think it's got it had four different locations. It and it moved around, opened a million years ago, and then they settled on this location. I've played it like four times and it is magnificent. Just I I've never been to Augusta, so I can't like like say, but it it feels like as close to what I could imagine being at Augusta would feel like, just in like how green the grass is, how crisp they cut the edges of the bunkers. You know, it it it is just so nice. you know, again, maybe I'll have a different take when I go to the masters one day, but you know, it's just for for me as a a lowly peasant, you know, trying to figure out my way onto nice golf courses, it's about as nice as I've ever been. RTJ course I I think the the slogan there is that he he wants a a hard par but an easy bogey in in all of the designs. So there's there's plenty of hard you know holes, there's plenty of length with a When Bell Reeve first had its its first PJ tour event, it was the longest course on tour at the time at 7100 yards about. so yeah, I'm I'm very excited to be there. It'll be it'll be really cool to attend a course that I, you know, a PGA event that I've actually played and have some knowledge of. I I don't know that I've played any other, you know, I've been to all sorts of PJ tour events. I don't know that I've ever played. One of actually no. I played T P C Louisiana, but I only played it once.
Chief Wedge Officer: And San Antonio San Antonio too.
Kevin Spisak: I I did not play T B C San Antonio.
Chief Wedge Officer: wait.
Kevin Spisak: No, I I went and spent four days there, but TBC Louisiana, I I played once, you know, my my biggest recollection was the the groom of the bachelor party taking a blade of grass to the eye and his eye swelling up. So that was that was a twist. But yeah, happy
Dominic: Heavy Henry podcast, we love it.
Kevin Spisak: handing. Wow, that's a mean nickname for him.
Dominic: no!
Chief Wedge Officer: Mm.
Kevin Spisak: I I've
Dominic: That's bad.
Kevin Spisak: excited for a text message about that one.
Chief Wedge Officer: I'm gonna save him as my he's still he's still I still have his regular number on my phone. I'm gonna save him save him save him as that.
Dominic: Heavy Henry, no! There's no one
Kevin Spisak: that's great. That's great. He's not happy.
Dominic: Anyways.
Kevin Spisak: But yeah, Matt, what do you know about Bel Reef?
Chief Wedge Officer: well, I don't know a ton about Bell Reeve. It gets a lot of hate from the architecture boys, out on the on the golf interwebs. the no laying ups, the fried eggs of the world. But I don't know, I mean, I I I St. Louis doesn't get a PGA tour event every year. It's cool to bring a PJ tour event there. the BMW championship is the old Western Open. so if you're not familiar, the Western Golf Association is a very, very big golf association, in the United States. They host the Western Amateur, which is basically like one level down to the US Amateur every year. It's a really big amateur tournament. and They normally the Western Open historically has always been in Chicago, but they now move that tournament around. so it's been to Baltimore, it's been to Indianapolis, it goes to Chicago, it's in Bel Reve. But the B this tournament gets major championship caliber courses to host their event, which is which is always pretty cool. So yeah, always excited for the BMW Championship and and the Western Open and it's cool to see Bel Reve kind of back in the back in the thing. I don't think they have a major plan to go back there for a while, do they Kev? Or the P J
Kevin Spisak: They've got the president's the president's cup is coming to Belraie I think in twenty thirty or something like that.
Chief Wedge Officer: There we go.
Kevin Spisak: But yeah, a a friend texted me when they announced that the BMW was coming this year and this was five years ago or something. His wife
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: was pregnant, you know, neither of us had kids and he's like, We're gonna go to this together, right? And I was like, I don't know, dude. You're gonna have a four year old kid at that point. Like I don't know anything about what's gonna be going on. So we've just been yeah, this event has felt like so far in the future for such a long time, it's wild that it's like already here.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, it's gonna be cool. I'm excited for it. I I'm it'll be be a hot weekend here, so it'll be good good weekend to watch some golf.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, the twenty eighteen PJ Championship was at Bell Reeve. That was a Brooks versus Tiger showdown. And I I think pretty much everyone in Saint Louis like holds that that tournament in such like high esteem for just how epic it was. And as mu as many people as there are that like Brooks, everyone on earth was rooting for Tiger.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, for sure.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I'm I'm definitely excited to go. it some other courses in Saint Louis. the I've heard from people that they're like, Bell Reef's not that special. I like such and such course better. I don't know. I I was just really blown away by how well old manicured that course was.
Chief Wedge Officer: There's definitely like a level of agronomy at those type of courses that's just like different.
Kevin Spisak: Big word. I don't know that I know what that means.
Chief Wedge Officer: Agronomy just course maintaining, all that sort of stuff. Grass.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Dominic: Well, we all wish we studied in college.
Chief Wedge Officer: yeah, yeah. We went
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: we we went to Texas A and A and we know about what agronomy seems
Kevin Spisak: Okay.
Dominic: Agricultural
Kevin Spisak: Is that
Dominic: baby.
Kevin Spisak: is that like Snoop Dogg and Starskin Hutch?
Dominic: Yes!
Chief Wedge Officer: I don't I watched Airplane for the first time this this weekend. I g a bunch of people I know, I'd never
Dominic: What'd think?
Chief Wedge Officer: What's your vector, Victor? It's a good movie. I don't know.
Dominic: It's it's just constant bits and it
Chief Wedge Officer: I know.
Dominic: yeah, you got to be paying attention. That's a fun one. Yeah, that's good callback, Kevin,
Chief Wedge Officer: All right.
Dominic: because I think that, I think you had quoted that on our first episode. Yeah, that's fun.
Kevin Spisak: Uh-huh. Definitely dead. I know grass.
Dominic: Alright, I think it's time for some trivia.
Chief Wedge Officer: Kevin, you got you got
Kevin Spisak: Right.
Chief Wedge Officer: bm w trivia for us.
Kevin Spisak: BMW trivia. Which way do you think I'm going? Am I going with the car, St. Louis, Tournament, Hardest Holes on the PJ Tour? Which way do you think I'm going?
Chief Wedge Officer: I think you're going with Saint Louis because you're a Saint Louis boy.
Dominic: You're going to go with bell architecture. All buildings with bells in them.
Kevin Spisak: Well I there's no reason to ask a question now. You got it.
Dominic: Drink up!
Kevin Spisak: I I had thought about the trivy question being kind of St. Louis focused. you know, Old Warson's in town and they hosted a rider cup. I thought about going in that in that avenue, but we're just gonna stick with the BMW championship and Bell Reve. This'll be kind of a basic question compared to some of my last ones. And I might be changing course midstream here because Matt looks too happy about that. All right, I'm just gonna go for it.
Dominic: Yeah, do it.
Kevin Spisak: Dom you answer first. Let's see this this grin on Matt's face. So the last time that the BMW championship was at Bell Reve, who won? The year was two thousand eight.
Dominic: the year before that. geez. 08
Chief Wedge Officer: Last was that the last time was that 2008 and who won?
Kevin Spisak: Two two thousand eight was the BMW championship, two thousand
Dominic: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Mm-hmm.
Kevin Spisak: eighteen was the PGA championship.
Dominic: I don't even know if I have a guest for you. Adam Scott.
Kevin Spisak: Decent guess.
Dominic: Not it, I'm assuming.
Kevin Spisak: I don't know.
Dominic: I don't know. Matt, who do you think?
Chief Wedge Officer: Two thousand eight. man, that was before my golf watching days. You g you stumped you stumped the chump.
Dominic: or any else.
Chief Wedge Officer: I I know who VJ Singh.
Kevin Spisak: That's a good guess. Thankfully, you haven't made me chug a beer in quite a while and and that c streak is gonna continue. so that year's winner was Camilo Viegas. Yeah, that
Dominic: okay.
Kevin Spisak: was like the peak of he was everywhere back, you know, when we were in middle school.
Chief Wedge Officer: The original spider.
Kevin Spisak: Exactly, exactly. The
Dominic: yeah. Heck yeah.
Kevin Spisak: the top five is kind of funny. there's a few ties in there, but some some names that I really have not thought about in such a long time looking at it. So Viegas won, Dudley Hart was solo second, Anthony Kim T three with Jim
Chief Wedge Officer: Ooh, hey baby.
Kevin Spisak: with Jim Furick, Stephen Ames, K J Choi, and DJ Trahan were T five.
Dominic: interesting.
Chief Wedge Officer: I was thinking like somebody like Nick Watney was gonna be up there or something.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. I th I think that was right
Dominic: Who?
Kevin Spisak: about his w wheelhouse as well.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. wow, that's those are some crazy names. What's Anthony Kim gonna do?
Kevin Spisak: I don't know. Can he play his way on?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, that's a name that yeah.
Dominic: be fun for him to come back, see what he can do.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, but I don't think it has any status anywhere.
Kevin Spisak: Compared to, you know,
Dominic: think so.
Kevin Spisak: this tournament r eighteen years later, isn't that mind blowing to think like that that's eighteen years ago?
Dominic: Yeah, it doesn't seem real.
Chief Wedge Officer: Bad smess. I do I feel like we need to hit on on the live news. s they cancelled so they canceled the championship event. and I guess
Dominic: Insane.
Chief Wedge Officer: this this week is going to be the finale or whatever. So like basically like they're just being like, well, whoever wins this week wins live golf for the year. You could be they could be they could be in last place and win this week and they win.
Dominic: That's such a little
Chief Wedge Officer: Ha ha
Dominic: brother thing to do. All right, whoever wins, whoever wins.
Chief Wedge Officer: whoever wins. so yeah, that's and then and then there's reports today that players still haven't gotten paid from Benminster. Yeah. So that's
Dominic: boy.
Kevin Spisak: Jeez.
Chief Wedge Officer: that's not good. can't be good. and then there's there you know there's a bunch of things out that John Roms already has a contract out with PJ Tor and all this sort
Dominic: Mm-hmm.
Chief Wedge Officer: of stuff. Just a just a bad, bad spot for Live Golf. The slow, inevitable death for for Live Golf.
Dominic: You were kind of talking about it last week where there was like, was like contingent. The investor was contingent on keeping like the big four, right? So it was John
Chief Wedge Officer: Right. Yeah.
Dominic: Rahm, Cam Smith,
Chief Wedge Officer: Bryson.
Dominic: Bryson and was it Dustin Johnson? Who's the fourth?
Chief Wedge Officer: I don't remember who the evening said the fourth is. That's how maybe
Dominic: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: maybe Ta Taylor Gooch.
Dominic: Okay, GC.
Chief Wedge Officer: I can't believe I can't believe I'm saying that, yeah. I don't know.
Dominic: What a wild scenario like it's it was a week after they said if John Ron leaves and he's just like well alright Like I'm curious This is so is he just gonna get no money I guess he's won money from
Chief Wedge Officer: A
Dominic: Perniments.
Chief Wedge Officer: not a financial person. I guess the way I was reading through it today was that even if Liv Golf files for bankruptcy, they still own his rights. So in theory, like Live Golf would could go bankrupt and and they still own John Rahm's rights.
Dominic: Rights to what? Like, NIL?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, like rights to like his where he plays golf. Which is a
Dominic: wow.
Chief Wedge Officer: weird thing for me. But then like if they file for or if they go into bankruptcy and there's like they're they they can't give John they they won't give John Rahm any money, but then John Rahm becomes like a creditor that can come back and like sue them. It just gets like super complicated. But like what is he gonna do? Like sue the Saudi government? Like I think we said that before, like that's a terrible idea.
Dominic: It's must-see TV though.
Chief Wedge Officer: I don't know. Doesn't seem like a good spot to be in.
Dominic: Yeah, it's definitely weird. I don't know. I guess we'll learn more as it comes out, but we'll see.
Chief Wedge Officer: I will say no laying up has some funny stuff. They like are bringing back all these quotes that the guys had right when Liv started. And like one of them was like, Liv, golfers haven't been paid, and then they like quoted like the Sergio quote where he was like, You mother you know are all screwed for playing this dumb PGA tour stuff. Like you guys are you guys are gonna be left behind.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm. Yes.
Dominic: It's gotta be all over the freezing cold takes Twitter page
Chief Wedge Officer: Absolutely. Absolutely. It's gonna
Dominic: boy.
Chief Wedge Officer: be hilarious.
Dominic: Yeah, we'll have keep an eye on that, see how goes. Maybe pop into that tournament, see if some random name wins, rather than.
Chief Wedge Officer: I just I just can't believe John or Bryson just seems so bought in.
Dominic: Yeah, they must have, he must
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: have gotten like, whenever they're talking about shares and ownership, they must have given him a hefty percentage for him to be talking like this out of nowhere.
Kevin Spisak: No, I don't think you can like believe anything he says. I think he's just all self promotion and
Dominic: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: you know, he where wherever he's at right in that instant, he's gonna self promote as hard as he can.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. For sure.
Dominic: content guy.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: Should we get into wanton guns?
Kevin Spisak: Yep. I I was eight
Chief Wedge Officer: Do it.
Kevin Spisak: shots away from a victory.
Dominic: I know I was watching like crazy. So a bit of a switch up since I'd already won the full year. We're doing a side bet for just the playoffs. And so we have a new order officially, I would say. So going through it, I had chosen Jackson Coyvan. Kevin went with Siwoo Kim and Matt went with Michael Kim, which I think I liked y'all's picks better going into it. And then Michael Kim was, was he leading after a couple days or was he just like top five? He was up there at one point.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Dominic: But ended up finishing, so Michael Kim was 55. And
Chief Wedge Officer: Mm.
Dominic: then Jackson Koyvan was 24th. And then, what about
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, Michael Oops sorry. My bad.
Dominic: Michael Kim?
Kevin Spisak: He was tied for the lead after the first day.
Dominic: That's right. Okay. Yeah. 500, 600. So then, so again, Jackson Koyman, 24, Michael Kim, 55, Siwoo Kim at two. Kevin starts off HOT hot in the, playoffs. So I think we should officially switch up the order for the first time. So, well, Matt still goes last. He still goes first and
Chief Wedge Officer: I'm still frightened.
Dominic: then I'll go second.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic: Kevin goes last. So Matt, who do you have for the BMW
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, yeah.
Kevin Spisak: This is such a new deal.
Dominic: championship at Belle Reeve?
Kevin Spisak: Wait, really quick. Dom, did you go wire to wire first the whole season?
Dominic: I
Kevin Spisak: That's outrageous. wait, no, no, no. No, Matt Matt
Dominic: Actually, no, no, no, no.
Kevin Spisak: had the first week.
Dominic: Matt was first with Adam Scott at four. I was
Chief Wedge Officer: Right.
Dominic: second with Tommy Fleetwood. And then from there is when I started my run.
Kevin Spisak: like there's a real real parallel there between our first week in one and done's and Matt's like Michael Kempick leading after the first day and then nowhere close.
Dominic: That did happen
Chief Wedge Officer: I'm going to
Dominic: a lot where Matt's guy leads early and then loses it.
Chief Wedge Officer: going through the leaderboard to, you know, really eye eye it in this week.
Dominic: Who are you going for? BMW Championship.
Chief Wedge Officer: See who can.
Dominic: Okay. This is going
Chief Wedge Officer: Ha
Dominic: to be the week he gets dead last.
Kevin Spisak: Uh-huh.
Chief Wedge Officer: No, he's been he's in good form. He's been in good form for like
Dominic: Yeah. So preparing for recording here, I was like, well, the year's already done, so I don't need to choose anybody crazy. I'm just gonna choose who I want to root for. But now I'm like, geez, I do wanna win the side bet now. I'm just gonna bank on nobody caring very much and still go with the person I want to root for. And I'm surprised I haven't chosen them all year. Give me Akshay Bhatia, Matt's favorite putter. It's a good pick for y'all. He's not been playing well lately. This is gonna be, this is his rubber pick,
Kevin Spisak: I do not like that pick.
Dominic: this is his rubber match.
Kevin Spisak: I don't like that pick at all.
Dominic: Did you want to choose them?
Kevin Spisak: No, I just I think that's a terrible pick. I'm
Dominic: All right, then I'm good. I'm good.
Kevin Spisak: gonna make a real big splash and go with my boy Cam Young. I was saving him for the playoffs thinking that I was gonna need him in some epic showdown with Dom, and then that never happened because I fell too far behind. So might as well use him now.
Dominic: I didn't realize you still had them.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I was saving him. He was my last
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: big hitter.
Chief Wedge Officer: He's a good pick here. I think he this golf course fits him to a T.
Dominic: And I get, so I was really excited before remembering that they don't give strokes for the tour championship. So I was like, all right, sick, I'm a lock. Cause I still haven't used Scotty. So I'm using Scotty next week. I'm locking it in. But I was like, sick, he's going to start 10 under, it's gonna be great.
Chief Wedge Officer: Do you know who the high best course fit is this week, according to Datagolph?
Dominic: Please say Akshay Bhatia.
Chief Wedge Officer: Roy McElroy.
Dominic: he's not gonna try. Is it because he bombs it?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, I think distance is key here. Is it long, Kevin? It must be really long from the tips, I'm guessing.
Kevin Spisak: It it was.
Dominic: 7400
Kevin Spisak: I don't know I don't know what it's set up to be now. Yeah, sorry.
Dominic: Yeah, 74, 74, 48. In some of the quick headlines, it's like driving, iron play, and it's less about like putting well, it's like avoiding mistakes.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, see that's why I wanna see with Kim. He stinks at putting.
Dominic: I respect it. All right, if OXAY wins, then what are y'all gonna do? You have to chug a beer.
Chief Wedge Officer: Oxide doesn't even show up on the coarse fit.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Dominic: That's why I like them. It's gonna be great. It's a vibes pick.
Kevin Spisak: I'll happily chug a beer if Akshay wins.
Chief Wedge Officer: Sure.
Dominic: If I have it if if I beat both of you if I if he somehow beats cam young and see who then we all chug
Chief Wedge Officer: Okay is not a good course fit for this course.
Dominic: All right, we'll see. Anything else, boys? pretty straightforward
Chief Wedge Officer: That's it.
Dominic: episode. All right, beautiful.
Chief Wedge Officer: John Raw, I hope you get your money. It's all about
Kevin Spisak: Mm.
Dominic: Menhani.
Chief Wedge Officer: the money.
Dominic: All well, thanks for listening. Follow us on our socials at underthecovergolf. The Mariners lost to the Brewers 22 to zero today. So that's fun. Thank you for listening.
Chief Wedge Officer: Okay.
