Transcript
Kevin Spisak: hello and welcome. We got another week of under the covers. As you can tell, this is not Dom's voice. This is Kevin. And we got Matt here. Matt, how you doing?
Chief Wedge Officer: Kevin, I'm doing great. we missed Dom. I am on the precipice of some colder weather, heading up to the Great White North tomorrow, to play some some very good golf. I'm very excited for it.
Kevin Spisak: gonna be an amazing trip. Get out of that Texas heat.
Chief Wedge Officer: right. It's a cool it was a cool one four today. really, really nice.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I I played yesterday in a tournament that it was a hundred and the heat index was like one fifteen and it was pretty
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: brutal.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, it's it's pretty bad here. But yeah, we're gonna we're in some for some good golf. not as good of golf as Jackson Coivan, I'm guessing. that was some pretty stout stuff.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, has has he done anything recently?
Chief Wedge Officer: yeah, just a cool twenty-eight on the back nine on Saturday at the three open and and then shoot a bogey free sixty-six to hold off Scotty Scheffler, the best player in the world at the three open. not bad for your twenty fourth day as a pro golfer. I'd say I'd
Kevin Spisak: That's insane.
Chief Wedge Officer: say that's pretty good.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I feel like him winning it kind of brings back the thoughts of like when Jordan Speeth won and he was like, you know, our same age when he won. It's like, damn it, like yeah, I'm c I'm cleaning golf clubs as a as a cart boy and Jordan Speet's winning golf tournaments. Now it's like Jackson Quaven's twenty one winning golf tournaments.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. Jackson Coythen, if you aren't familiar with that name, I would say get familiar with that name, number one. number two, so kind of a stud out of Auburn, was at Auburn for the last three years. won the SEC, I think, three years in a row, which is pretty, pretty badass. he's kind of like that first really A lot of these players now are staying in college a little bit longer because of NIL. I think he like famously came out and said, like, why would I leave Auburn? I'm making millions of dollars here on NIL and I get to play golf every day, and I get
Kevin Spisak: That's wild. Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: to be in Aub be at Auburn, Alabama. so yeah, but he he came out on tour this year. His first start was at the John Deere. I can't remember if he missed the cut or not. I don't think he played super well. but yeah. in his, I don't know, handful of starts, he comes out and just beats a pretty good field that included again, like the number one player in the world. and so showed some pretty good nails down the stretch. big thing there is is we've had a ton of like these like I don't know, Kevin, like do you know if I if I read off the name Gordon Sargent, does that you know that name?
Kevin Spisak: Nothing. Nope.
Chief Wedge Officer: Luke Luke Clinton. Nope. Okay. So some of these guys, like Lou Clinton, he was at Florida State, Gordon Sargent was at Villanova. They're like kind of they were like over the last, I don't know, two or three years, they were kind of like the can't miss guys that came out on tour, right?
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Chief Wedge Officer: where everybody was like, This is the next Jordan Speith, or this is the next whatever. and none of had really have really had the success that we thought they would have. There's the one kid that won as an amateur at the Amex tournament. I can't remember his name off the top of my head. but he won while he was a student at Alabama as an amateur and then ended up turning pro after that.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: But like all these guys have come out on tour and not really done well, right? Like Luke Clinton, we haven't really heard about him a ton. Gordon Sargent hasn't had the success everybody thought he was gonna have. Jackson Coivant definitely seems to be different. came out right away, ready to win, and seems to kind of be that next young stud that's coming up. Did you did you catch out a swing? There's a lot of talk on on the golf swing right now for Jackson Coivant.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. It's it's pretty aggressive and he you know, he's got the like kinda hunched over posture and the follow through but it seems like he can really whip it around. Yeah, it's
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: more athletic of a move than I probably have in me.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, a lot of talk about, you know, back problems. I think reminds me a little bit of of Justin Thomas, a little bit, you know, a hundred and fifty pounds soaking wet, but you know, gives it everything he's got. so pretty cool to see him win. a lot of President's Cup talk, is is also the big big thing on social media right now. I'm gonna list a couple names off to you, Kevin. Would you pick Jackson Coivan over some of these names right now?
Kevin Spisak: Okay.
Chief Wedge Officer: Wyndham Clark.
Kevin Spisak: No.
Chief Wedge Officer: Justin Thomas.
Kevin Spisak: Yes.
Chief Wedge Officer: Xander Shoffley Akshay Bhatia. Remember he cheats putting.
Kevin Spisak: No.
Chief Wedge Officer: shout out Dom. Jacob Bridgeman. Really?
Kevin Spisak: He's had a good season and he's he's just got more professional experience.
Chief Wedge Officer: Harris English Ryan Gerard.
Kevin Spisak: Yes. Yes. Because he let me down in one and dunce.
Chief Wedge Officer: I I think if the US were using the president's cup as a rider cup testing bed, they would put him on the team. But I agree with you that I don't think he's gonna get picked over people like Wyndham Clark or Xander Shoffley or even Akshay Batia spots.
Kevin Spisak: I think JT's obviously a good player, but I don't know, he I feel like he's kinda keeping some like name notoriety up without like the performance following.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: yeah, just for the last, you know, however many years. yeah, he I don't know, he when he won the PGA championship, what was that? Twenty twenty three is the last one?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, something like that.
Kevin Spisak: it just seems like he he just hasn't been all that relevant since. I don't know. I I probably need to go back and look at the actual numbers to like validate that. That's more of a feeling than a a stat based, you know, response about J T.
Chief Wedge Officer: See like I trust like Colin Morikawa is number six on the list right now. I would put Jacks I would rather Jackson Koy Coivan over Colin Morakawa at the present.
Kevin Spisak: Is that because you don't like Colin Workow?
Chief Wedge Officer: Well, maybe. but somebody like Chris Godder up, I would put Chris Goddard up on the team.
Kevin Spisak: yeah. Well he is seventh in the official World Golf rankings.
Chief Wedge Officer: He's also he's also seventh in the st in the President's Cup qualifying standards. And but then you have somebody like Russell Henley, who Russell Henley is an absolute dog at number three. But part of me going up against Jackson Coyvan's a scarier than going up against Russell Hill.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Definitely seems like he's got, you know, all the wind is in his sails right now and winning his third PJ Tour start. He was T twenty three at the US Open. and then his his second PJ Tour start, he was T ten. So he everything's looking up for him right now. looking at his resume here, am I crazy? One of his college golf tournaments in April he played in the Mason Rudolph Championship. Is that like the quarterback? Have you ever heard of that?
Chief Wedge Officer: You you you mean the guy that got that got bopped by by Miles Garden?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. I I saw that really caught my eye. But Yeah,
Chief Wedge Officer: Maybe.
Kevin Spisak: what were you gonna say?
Chief Wedge Officer: That's funny. No, I think I think if you let's let's dive under the covers, Titleist Boy. under the covers of Jackson Quatin.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, slip under the covers here. so Jackson Coivin, titles GT two driver, eight degrees. He's got a older shaft. I think we talked about a Fujikura speeder once earlier this year, but speeder six six one TRX. So an older shaft model, I think from like twenty eighteen timeframe. So, you know, he was probably still on formula bottles back then when this when the shaft came out.
Chief Wedge Officer: Mm.
Kevin Spisak: But he's got it in play in the GT two mid mid low launch, low spin. and then he goes to the GTS three prototype on a three wood. there's some like rumor about like what his prototypes are. We don't necessarily know yet and title this isn't really releasing a lot about him. But the prototype I believe he put in the bag like just a couple weeks ago.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: and yeah, tour only option. He's got the graphic design tour ADDI eight X. So that's high launch, low spin on three wood. So just looking to hit a high launch and bombs.
Chief Wedge Officer: Like he did he hit that one, I think it was on I forget what hole, but he hit it was he hit three wood from three three.
Kevin Spisak: That's amazing.
Chief Wedge Officer: To like right behind the pin. That was sick.
Kevin Spisak: Sounds just like you.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, right.
Kevin Spisak: then irons. he's got a T2503 utility iron, kind of, you know, bigger bigger head there for some more forgiveness on a three iron. T100 on a four iron. and then some prototypes that are just for him. that again, Titus is not releasing a lot of info about. Titalis 620 MBs. I was reading that I guess this is kind of comparable to the like dot Bs that they've made for other players like Justin Thomas or Cameron Young.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: so some something that they're working on with with these blades are for Jackson Quaven. And you know, that it kinda speaks to the kind of the star power he already has in his early career that, you know, he could get. of this level of attention and customization, yada yada. but cool stuff there. We'll we'll have to, you know, follow up with him, you know, and figure out as we can learn more about what's different about his blades versus, you know, Justin Thomas, Cam Young, anyone else's blades. You know, we've talked in pr prior episodes about like, can you buy Rory's actual, you know, Roar's Taylor Maids or Scotty's TWs, you know. what is being changed, you know, are or will they have these off the rack, you know, at at one point.
Chief Wedge Officer: Right. I I saw some stuff with his that He has a bit of a leading edge grinded off the front of him. so they did they kinda get through the turf a little bit better. he is a drawler drawler of the golf ball, which would actually be interesting because I think him and Cam Young both are drawers of the golf ball and they both have kind of like that custom NB soul that they use, which kind of would be an interesting thing to see if theirs are similar almost in some way.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. They they look absolutely beautiful. They look like a butter knife. Just
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: pretty sick irons he's got there. and then on the shafts wise he's got graphite design, DIHY ninety five X in the three iron. and then four through pitching wedge stout boys with the Project X six point five.
Chief Wedge Officer: The roars, right?
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Chief Wedge Officer: Or roars might be using seven point ohs, but yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, we've we've had a few 7.0s this year, but 6.5 seems more common.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: There was like that that run of a few weeks where it was like the dynamic gold X7s and Project X seven point is like
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. Yeah, yeah.
Kevin Spisak: middle of the season. It was just all the stiffest shafts you could find. then wedges, we got Vokey SM11s, 46 degree F. Grind, 50 degree F grind, 54 degree grind, bent to a 55, and then a 60 degree T grind. So that low bounce, lots of relief, trailing edge, heel toe relief. That's a that is a that is a knife. That's a sharp one.
Chief Wedge Officer: I'm thinking this this might be when I eventually go to the SM11s. This might be my exact wedge setup. I think this is exactly what I'm looking for because I went from the s 58 grind to the 58 K Star, which I
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Chief Wedge Officer: love, but I think the K Star is too it's it's too almost like I I don't know, I don't love the K star, like I think I I like it but I don't love it. I think I wanna I loved the grind in my fifty eight, but I think I wanna drop my grind to my fifty four and then go to the T grind in my fifty eight. I think that's where I'm that's where I'm headed.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. I I would love to hear what you think of that. the the turf in St. Louis is way too soft. I think I would just be sticking that thing in the ground.
Chief Wedge Officer: And I wonder if my K Star will perform better in Saint Louis than it almost does down here.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, maybe. yeah, I mean with the wide sole, you know, and the leading edge relief you have yeah. I I I feel like that makes more sense for like Missouri soil re you know, compared to a traditional like low bounds wedge.
Chief Wedge Officer: Right.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. We'll yeah, we'll have to do some testing.
Chief Wedge Officer: For sure.
Kevin Spisak: but then shafts on those, he's got the six point five again in the forty six and fifty and then goes down to six point and fifty four and then on the sixty he's got the Project X IO six point So two like softer ones. but calling a six point zero soft is you know, it's not it's not soft, but good.
Chief Wedge Officer: He doesn't he doesn't leave anything on the table, Kevin, when he swings it on the plug.
Kevin Spisak: Mm. Yep, that's for sure. then his putter's pretty sick. and now we've seen this head style appear a few times this season. The
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Scotty Cameron Phantom nine point five R Circle T. so kind of spider like mallet. yeah I I think he's had three putter changes in the last three months, I believe. and yeah, this this head style, you know, Cameron Young's played it, Justin Thomas is playing it. We're seeing a common theme here with, you know, him being compared to their bags. but he's definitely rolling the rock with this bad boy and it's sick. I I want one.
Chief Wedge Officer: What I I definitely want one. I'm I'm definitely thinking about getting one. what I find interesting is that if you look up his putter, he has the he a lot of Tor Pros are going away from the insert, like that new pure roll insert or whatever Scotty Cameron's dubbed it. And they're actually having like his his one has the regular milling pattern that Scotty's like famous for. and so it's interesting to see like a lot of the Tor Pros going away from that.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm. The like chain link thing. Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: That yeah, that chain link insert. Cause when I hit that chain link, I do not I do not like the chain link. I've I've played around with it. Two things, I think it's way too firm. I don't like that. And two, sand gets caught in it and you can't get it out.
Kevin Spisak: Cheese. Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: So I was sitting there one time with like a T just trying to like pluck out little things of sand after they like sanded the greens.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I know Tej always talks about like how all the manufacturers got away from like your normal like single milled putterhead and doing inserts
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. So, I I would love to get my hands on a nine point five without the insert. I think that'd be freaking sick.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, that would be awesome. I saw someone else, I can't recall who. Someone else had the like copper insert, like the terrarium insert across the face.
Chief Wedge Officer: Brooks.
Kevin Spisak: wa wasn't his like smaller though?
Chief Wedge Officer: I feel like he put it in 'cause he's so used to the copper insert. But I I know I I remember what you were talking I remember what you're talking about.
Kevin Spisak: yeah, I i it it may be him where it was like the full face insert. It it looked absolutely amazing.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: yeah, really cool bag for people who enjoy titleist. I know there's a few of you out there. and then ball, we're back to the old trusty Pro V one. So
Chief Wedge Officer: Right.
Kevin Spisak: another check mark for titleist there on the golf ball. any other thoughts or comments on Jackson Quatlin's bag?
Chief Wedge Officer: No, you know, we're we're an equipment podcast, but I do believe I I need to shout out I feel like he wears Malbon and I don't love Malbon stuff, but I feel like they're not putting him in the crazy Malbon stuff. And I feel like his admittedly actually looks really good.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Yeah, he's not a fashion icon like Jason Day.
Chief Wedge Officer: No. Like his is very like subdued. Like he was wearing black pants and a white shirt. And I think that I think it looked great. Like I think if Malbon doesn't do just like weird stuff, I think they can absolutely be in the market and I would definitely rock some of those some of the pants and some of the stuff that they have, so
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I almost had to think about like seeing the Melbourne logo on his shirt. I almost thought that that was like a different company's like sponsorship and you know, I had to like figure out like, no, that's actually Melbourne. Like, why isn't this shirt all weird? Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. 'Cause it Exactly, right? It doesn't look it doesn't look weird. so yeah, I was a fan of fan of his fits for sure. They're good.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, so that is what's under the covers for Jackson Coivan Up and Coming Star PGA Tour.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: So what else is going on in the world of golf here this week?
Chief Wedge Officer: man, so today Live a after a lot of speculation, Live is is going to officially cancel the l finale this year, which is like their team event. where it
Kevin Spisak: Just today that happened? I didn't hear this.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, well everybody says that the official announcement is coming tomorrow, but like it's it's out now. So this is like their best event of the year. This is when actually like you they play as a team. Like they actually play alternate shot and like best ball and all that sort of stuff. so I think they I I mean, live is officially, officially dead. There's no way they'd cancel this and be like, we're coming back for more. I think I wrote in the newsletter this week, I think there's like three or four groups that I'm really interested in. To know what happens with Liv, right? So you have your superstars, you have John Rom, Bryson DeChambeau, Cam Smith. Like that's kind of a grouping. and and in theory, like they're gonna be fine, right? They're gonna have a place to play, they're gonna they can get a card on the European tour, like whatever. the second group of people is the olds, right? So like the Ian Poulters, the Lee Westwoods, Martin Kimers. What do they go do from here? Like they're not gonna be allowed on the senior tour, on the PG tour. and their world
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: ranking has dropped enough where they're just cooked.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Is there a senior European tour they could play on for you know, some of those guys are Euros.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: you know that or you know, Ian Poulter's just gonna drive his fast cars and watch his son play college golf, right? Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. YouTube golf. They could get into YouTube golf. the I think the third one, which is arguably the most interesting for me, is what happens to the guys that came out of on tour or on live right out of college. So they never played on the PGA Tour. So technically they can go right back to the PGA tour. They have no No
Kevin Spisak: No penalty for leaving.
Chief Wedge Officer: penalty, right? Because they were never members. so I'm thinking Michael Lasasso Like some of these guys that are like that came out right after. we saw Eugene Chikara, he's back kind of on the PGA tour now. David Pugh, and and some of the others, Cameron Caleb Surratt, things of that nature, right? So those I've those I think are gonna be the most interesting 'cause I don't know if their world ranking is high enough to like get them in the events that they want to get into. They've made all this money, but like where do they where do they go from here? You know what I mean?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, that's a good question. Yeah, probably some sort of social media presence. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe sail off into the sunset and don't know, maybe be a golf coach somewhere or just make, you know, public appearances at charity golf outings or something. I don't know.
Chief Wedge Officer: I I think I think they have to I think if someone is gonna give them something, right? They'll either play on like the European Challenge Tour or the Asian Tour or something like that. Like I think they'll find some
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Chief Wedge Officer: way, but it'll be interesting to see how their careers turn out, for some of those guys. But yeah, that's that's what I really th think is gonna be interesting. Like, I don't know. Live is live is wild, man. I think the next like I think obviously like we have to also look back and like Bryson has refused to sign a long term deal with Liv for the last year. and they've been trying to get him to sign a long term deal. Like for all the shit we give Bryson about being like a weirdo and you know just all like he's smart because he obviously saw something has been coming and he refused to sign the contract extension. And his contract is up after this year.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. What I mean what would I I guess is the thought that if he had signed so say like like a John Ram scenario, if there's another future investor that they'd still be stuck?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, so the thought with John Rahm is that or this is the in the this is all allegedly, so lawyers please don't come after me. that John Rom was paid up front and in or up front with a combination of cash and stock in what live is, right? And So his contract was for four years or whatever it is, right? And he's like two years or three years into his contract. So he has like another year or two years on his contract. So like I think the theory is that in if Liv comes back in some form next year where the purses are basically nothing and it's like It's it's very it's it's a f shell of what it is today. Like they could force John Rahm no, no, you have to play in these events. Like we're forcing you to play in these events.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Because we you signed a contract and we we already paid you this money and yeah, we paid you in stock, and yeah, it's worth nothing, but like that's the chance you take. So that
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, right, right, right.
Chief Wedge Officer: one I think is is is also obviously the most interesting.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Boy, this is it's like insane how much of like a flash this was and how disruptive it is to then like already be dying.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. It's crazy, man.
Kevin Spisak: And like all all the star power that Liv had, you know I mean w what? Half of the biggest names in all of golf went to Liv?
Chief Wedge Officer: Maybe I don't know if it was half, but I mean yeah, like Dustin Johnson, like he'd give a shit. He's just gonna like go fish. I mean he'll care, but Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. I mean that's that's what I mean like biggest names, not necessarily like up and coming stars or you know, current good golfers, just just plainly big names.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. No, I hear ya. Yeah, it's gonna be sad, it's gonna be different. I mean, it's it's just it's I should have bought more Rippers hats. Is my
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: my take on that. so. But
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: yeah, otherwise, quick notes, Traveler's Championship is the first champ tournament confirmed for what is gonna be the twenty twenty eight championship series for the PJ Tour.
Kevin Spisak: Okay, different from the champions tour.
Chief Wedge Officer: Different from the champions. This is this is the higher level PGA tour events.
Kevin Spisak: Do we do we know what the champions tour is gonna be renamed to be? Is that like the AARP tour or something?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. I was gonna say the Medicaid Medicaid tour. Yeah, I think obviously like the Travelers has has niched itself into like a really good tournament that they I think we talked about this a couple weeks ago, when the Travelers happened, but yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Chief Wedge Officer: not surprising, kind of serves that northeast area for golf, so We will see the best players in the world at the Travelers in twenty twenty eight and on and onward.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Our favorite spot in Cromwell, Connecticut. Can you
Chief Wedge Officer: Right?
Kevin Spisak: can you remember what the body of water that the Connecticut River empties out into?
Chief Wedge Officer: Potomac.
Kevin Spisak: No.
Chief Wedge Officer: Nah, I don't I remember.
Kevin Spisak: The Long Island Sound.
Chief Wedge Officer: The Long Island Sun. Yeah, I I don't remember that one. I'm only good with golf. I'm not good with geography. Dom had a couple notes he wanted to throw in. Dom said Gotta talk about Wyndham being a scumbag in trenching.
Kevin Spisak: yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Did you see the video?
Kevin Spisak: I did not. I I saw that Kevin Kisner had some stuff to say about like trenching as like the current
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: hot topic.
Chief Wedge Officer: So he so Wyndham has like if you've seen his putter, right? We were talking about it, it's got like lead tape all over it. So it's like pretty s it's pretty heavy.
Kevin Spisak: Hmm. That's heavy, yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Right? So like he had like a four footer and he was like stamping all the way between the ball and the hole or his ball mark and the hole. so people are calling him out for trenching. And honestly, I'm all for it. I hate Wyndham Clark. Wyndham Clark's st
Kevin Spisak: I thought you were about to say you're all for trenching.
Chief Wedge Officer: No. no, absolutely not. Wyndham Clark stinks he is trenching. He should have been we should retroactively take his away his US Open for cheating since we penalized Bryson.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. I I kinda wonder on the trenching like if we could measure how much it's actually doing. You know, the PG Ature greens, the grass is so small. Are you really flattening it down that much? you know, when they they cut and roll you know, it's I don't know. I I wonder, you know, it's not like Bryson moving a giant, you know, thing of grass out of his his backswing. but, you know, if you make an actual trench and it guides the ball in then that seems pretty unethical.
Chief Wedge Officer: I think Wyndham is the modern day and I say modern day, the Patrick Reed of the twenty twenties. I think Patrick Reed was you know, he originated in the twenty nineteen or the twenty teens. Wyndham Clark is this this decade's Patrick Reed.
Kevin Spisak: I can't explain it for the life of me. So I I don't know how to support Wyndham here. But like
Chief Wedge Officer: It's a good take, isn't it?
Kevin Spisak: it it's a fantastic take, yes. You it's like you're right, but at the same time, I like Wyndham like worlds more than I've ever liked Patrick Reed and I wouldn't say that I like Wyndham. Like I
Chief Wedge Officer: Kevin, you what it's right, but you know it's so wrong. I under
Kevin Spisak: I I know, but like I can't you know, it's like I I wanted to say Wyndham isn't as douchey as Patrick Reed. It's like, well, he kinda is. And then it's like there's
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, come he wants to open some grape.
Kevin Spisak: like something different about his douchhiness. Like Patrick Reed's
Chief Wedge Officer: Absolutely.
Kevin Spisak: seemed more like arrogant, where Wyndham's is more like bro, you know? Yeah. So I don't know. Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Rat bull Yeah. Yeah. For sure. Maybe one day I'll tell my Wyndham story, but I it's locked in the vault.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I don't I don't blame him. yeah, did Dom have any other notes?
Chief Wedge Officer: we I do want to shout out Dom. He was voted MVP in his in his Ryder Cup tournament this week. he looks so cute in his little pink shirt. Dom, we're proud of you. I think I'm I'm gonna take I would like to take fifty percent of the credit for teaching him how to clear his hips. over the last few weeks. so I believe I I'm owed a little bit there. yeah, well maybe we'll flash a little picture of him on the screen 'cause he's a little cutie boy.
Kevin Spisak: Yes. Yeah, definitely shout out Don for that. he also, you know, while he's not with us, you know he he he did
Chief Wedge Officer: Not
Kevin Spisak: provide me this hat and I feel like I look like a major loser in this hat 'cause it's not the ha the shape that I usually go for, but it is a sick hat, so thank you, Dem. Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: It it makes me think of, mmm, yum.
Kevin Spisak: He sent a picture last year when he was at the 3M of this hat and I was like, man, you gotta get me one. And then he got it for me and brought it to St. Louis and I was like, this is sweet. And I put it on and just like looked at the mirror, I like, wow, I cannot pull this off. But again, thank you, Dam. Hopefully for the people on the on the watching the video, hopefully I'm pulling it off more than I feel like I am.
Chief Wedge Officer: all right, on to the Rocket Preview. so Rocket, don't call me Rocket Mortgage Classic. remember they they took away that name. Detroit Country Club. Kevin, you're a Midwest guy. Would you consider Detroit in the Midwest?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Yeah for sure. Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Idiot? Ka.
Kevin Spisak: What what would you consider it as? Is that a question?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, I I think it's a question. I mean, I I kinda consider Detroit like like north.
Kevin Spisak: No, no. I think like Minnesota is like north. But like you got I'd say Midwest as a Midwesterner, Midwest is like Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Indianapolis, Chicago, Milwaukee, down to St. Louis, Louisville. Yeah. Kansas City. Then that's it.
Chief Wedge Officer: Did you say Pittsburgh?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, Pittsburgh would be the furthest east end.
Chief Wedge Officer: Okay, of the midway.
Kevin Spisak: It the word Midwest, you know, is dumb. Like Pittsburgh is far east, you know, on
Chief Wedge Officer: Right.
Kevin Spisak: the map, but just for what the region is, it's like humble people, similar geography, you know, the Great Lakes, you know, kind of similar all around there.
Chief Wedge Officer: Have you ever have you ever been to Detroit?
Kevin Spisak: Very briefly a pass through.
Chief Wedge Officer: Okay. I've never been to Detroit, and I w I I would I would have classified it as north, but I now know.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, St. Louis to me, like growing up I would have said Saint Louis was like the deep South. but like
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: now living here, I've clearly learned that that's not true. But it is kind of fun to poke at people who are from Saint Louis and call it the South 'cause
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: they don't think that it is. but you know, I don't know. It was a Confederate state, so maybe Missouri doesn't get to be a part of the Midwest.
Chief Wedge Officer: quick Detroit trivia question, which I don't think is your trivia question, so but this is just a quick one. what famous sports announcer is big is from Detroit?
Kevin Spisak: Famous sports announcer, gym nance.
Chief Wedge Officer: No, Mike Tarica. Big Detroit.
Kevin Spisak: okay. Yeah, went to Syracuse.
Chief Wedge Officer: Big Detroit guy. but yeah, so Detroit Country Club. actually one of my sneaky, good, old school Donald Ross Country Club. And I love a good Donald Ross. Donald Ross is one of my favorite architects of all time. very, very much bomb and gouge a little bit. It it the the tour has passed this place by. I believe they've done a a few updates here and there to try to make it a little longer, a little harder. but the tour guys pretty much tear this place apart. So we are in for we're in for a a good round, a good you know, minus twenty seven maybe winning or something like that probably. but you know it's cool to see kind of those old school clubs still be able to host PJ tour events. So cool little spot. some something if you're you know around the town It's not bad to flip on on it's a good it's a good nap viewing on Saturday afternoon and Sunday afternoon.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. I think this'll be a good tournament as we get into the end of the year and start thinking more playoffs and you know, with the the Wyndham and St. Jude and BMW you know, wrapping us up before the end of the year. be good like kind of low stress, don't have to be glued to the TV but still, you know, wanna see what they're doing. you know, Cam Young's in the field, it's a big name, Chris Goddard up. So we got
Chief Wedge Officer: Brad Docky, I feel.
Kevin Spisak: But but yeah, I wouldn't say I've ever gotten too amped up about the Rocket Classic, Rocket Mortgage Classic, whatever they're gonna change their name to next year. but it is cool that Detroit, you know, has a PJ Tour event every year. from everything I hear, Detroit is a very underrated city, kinda like, you know, Cleveland. gets a bad rap for stuff that happened a million years ago. but yeah, pretty revamped now.
Chief Wedge Officer: How how do you are you upset about LeBron not going to Cleveland? Quick tangent.
Kevin Spisak: sad s sad but it's whatever.
Chief Wedge Officer: Okay.
Kevin Spisak: yeah, would have been fun. I I feel like the Sixers thing it like makes sense with what he you know what he felt about the Lakers organization. Like the Sixers organization's like a historic, you
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: know one to say that you're part of.
Chief Wedge Officer: my favorite part of the Rocket Classic is the three one three challenge. so you have to make they have this whole thing where they'll donate like a ton of money if if if somebody goes like three one three on the last three holes, which is a par five, par three, par five. So you have to go eagle, eagle, eagle, and it's the chances of that happening are like s so they like do they have this whole like Someone gonna win the 3-1-3 challenge. It's like, no, nobody's gonna win the three-one three challenge. Yeah, it's stupid.
Kevin Spisak: No, no, absolutely not. That can't have ever happened at any course ever, right?
Chief Wedge Officer: It's probably happened once, but like
Kevin Spisak: Eagle Eagle Eagle. I if it was like Birdie Hole in one birdie, I can see that. But that would still be so rare. Throwing
Chief Wedge Officer: Three one.
Kevin Spisak: two eagles on both ends of a hole-in-one is ridiculous.
Chief Wedge Officer: I know. Yeah, so hole fourteen is a part five, hole fifteen's part three. hole sixteen's a part three. So you have to go Eagle Eagle Eagle Birdie. And they only And they only win a three hundred and thirteen thousand dollar donation if they do that.
Kevin Spisak: They should just give the donation just for coming up with this dumb idea.
Chief Wedge Officer: That's like that's the put up five million dollars. Who named Kurt?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: all right, let's move into you got a trivia question for us on our on the Rocket Classic to
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. You you kinda took us in the right direction with your LeBron question. and you kinda brought up again I brought it up with Detroit and Cleveland kind of being similar, you know, blue collar towns get a bad rap, but they're actually like pretty cool towns. So Rocket, Rocket Mortgage, Quicken Loans, whatever the heck you wanna call it,
Chief Wedge Officer: Mm-hmm.
Kevin Spisak: primary owner is Dan Gilbert. Do you know who Dan Gilbert is?
Chief Wedge Officer: Owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Kevin Spisak: Yes, owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. his son, Nick, his oldest son, tragically died in twenty twenty three from neurofibromatosis, saying that right. But he was like a like a person people like look to as like a good luck charm for NBA draft lotteries. So when When LeBron left the Cavs the first time, you know, they had a miserable season and then the draft lottery comes up and each team, you know, picks a representative to, you know, sit and be there. And there's like this epic image of Nick Gilbert wearing a bow tie and throwing his fist in the air when the Cavs got the number one pick in the draft. So the trivia question is for for Nick Gilbert's first NBA draft. Who did the Cavs pick?
Chief Wedge Officer: man. I got I
Kevin Spisak: So this is like a real, real long connection, you know, going from golf to
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Dan Gilbert with the sponsor to the team that he owns. and and while you're thinking a quick side,
Chief Wedge Officer: That's right.
Kevin Spisak: the the Cavs have done a bow tie game each of the last four years since he passed, you know, in support of neurofibromatosis and kind of remembering him being a good luck charm. They they got the first overall pick in the draft three times with him being
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: at the draft lottery.
Chief Wedge Officer: And one was Kyrie Kyrie Irving, but this is not that's not my answer because he was not the pick. He didn't turn out. I know it didn't he didn't he he was good, but he wasn't great. He wasn't what everybody thought he was going to be. Because Kyrie Irving came later and then LeBron came back. He played he made a splash on the on the Warriors during the championship run, I believe their second championship run. god, what is his name, Kevin? man, I feel like I n and you're you're worried. I can tell you're worried. I know I know you're worried.
Kevin Spisak: I am worried.
Chief Wedge Officer: You know I'm on the right track too. God, I just can't think of his name, Kevin. All right, let's go to one and done's. I'll think of his name, but you don't have to drink a beer 'cause I didn't get it. But I I w I know his name.
Kevin Spisak: Since since you I since I know who you're saying you gave this resume, does the initials AW help?
Chief Wedge Officer: Yes, a Andrew
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Chief Wedge Officer: Andrew. I can't think of his last name.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. You're thinking of Andrew Wiggins and that would be incorrect. The
Chief Wedge Officer: man, I am thinking of Andrew Wiggins.
Kevin Spisak: the correct answer was Kyrie Irving. Yeah. Yep.
Chief Wedge Officer: no, really? Did they pick Wig after him?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, so they picked Kyrie in the 2011 draft. so Kyrie's been in the NBA for a while. And
Chief Wedge Officer: Wow.
Kevin Spisak: then Andrew Wiggins was the twenty fourteen draft, if I'm remembering correctly.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: And then Anthony Bennett was their other first round pick who
Chief Wedge Officer: Okay. Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: was a major flop. they traded him yeah pretty quickly. so anywho, yeah, rock
Chief Wedge Officer: It's very equal.
Kevin Spisak: Rocket Classic, just going all the way through all the connections
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: and trying to find a trivia question that Matt would not get.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah, yeah. I like it. All right, one and done.
Kevin Spisak: Yes. boy.
Chief Wedge Officer: since man. Who who did I pick last week? Zach Blair, how did he do?
Kevin Spisak: So, you made the best pick of the week with Zach Blair at T13. So congratulations. Dom kept his lead very strong with Kurt Kidiyama at T twenty four. I thought I had a brief flash with Corey Connors. that he was gonna help me out, but he finished T thirty nine. So I lost even more grounded you gained a little bit, but I don't know that that's gonna help you out very much.
Chief Wedge Officer: No. No. it will not help me out. But I think I'm gonna give some good vibes going into next year. I think I'm I'm I'm learning how to pick my pick my players. So
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Dom apparently has some like super secret method that he's using and it's been feeling him this whole time. so we gotta find out what that is. But
Chief Wedge Officer: I think we need I think we should have penalized him more for picking players that didn't weren't in the field at the beginning of the season.
Kevin Spisak: In hindsight, yeah, we we need to dian that out. Next year we'll we'll have that better. But that would put our totals on the season. Your number cracks me up every week. Dom is at 678. I'm at 918, and you're at 1400 on the dot.
Chief Wedge Officer: higher the better, baby.
Kevin Spisak: The the title is B dot. So, who you got?
Chief Wedge Officer: yeah, this year. man. I was going through the list. a lot of names I don't know on here. No, I am going with one. Michael Brennan played pretty good last week. three at the three And again,
Kevin Spisak: Okay.
Chief Wedge Officer: like I said, the you know the the Detroit country club has not Done well with the times and Michael Brennan is a master of the golf ball. I think he could play well here. yeah.
Kevin Spisak: and out of out of people at the top to pick for sure. And I think I'd I just have to keep going with it because only four tournaments left after this and I need to catch down somehow, so I'm gonna go with Chris Goddard.
Chief Wedge Officer: Ooh, it's a good pick. Good pick. I like that.
Kevin Spisak: Should we pretend that Dom didn't submit a pick and we'll just pick for him again?
Chief Wedge Officer: well Dom is picking Chandler Phillips this week. Yeah. Yeah. no Dom did send in and and we love Chandler
Kevin Spisak: nice. Thanks, Dom.
Chief Wedge Officer: Phillips on this podcast. Old friend. Dom sent in Keegan Bradley as his pick this week. Captain
Kevin Spisak: Keegan.
Chief Wedge Officer: America.
Kevin Spisak: He's gonna end up winning. So congrats Keegan. We can just get ready to recap your bag next week.
Chief Wedge Officer: but yeah, that's that's pretty much all I got. man, I I'm excited for the playoffs. BMW's coming to Bel Reeve, right? It's gonna be in your neck of the woods.
Kevin Spisak: Yep, yep. A month from today. yeah,
Chief Wedge Officer: Nice.
Kevin Spisak: it'll be that that weekend. Or no no no. No, it's the weekend before that, right? I'm crazy. Anyways, yeah,
Chief Wedge Officer: It's not.
Kevin Spisak: it'll be at Bel Reve, and it's gonna be very fun. Top fifty in the world, no cut, or not in the world, but FedEx Cup, but top fifty players, no cut. It should be a very fun weekend. I'm going to the Friday and Saturday round of
Chief Wedge Officer: Nice.
Kevin Spisak: the BMW. It'd be very fun. Get some field reporting.
Chief Wedge Officer: Yeah. Feel yeah, get some and try to get it try to get an interview for us. Try to s you know, get some get some players talking.
Kevin Spisak: I can get a press pass.
Chief Wedge Officer: We should try.
Kevin Spisak: That would be sick.
Chief Wedge Officer: Hey, Kevin here with Under the Covers. I like that. I think that I think that goes well.
Kevin Spisak: ask ask people, can I get under your covers?
Chief Wedge Officer: yeah, I will I'm gonna do some reporting from I'm gonna under the covers is going to Cabot Cliffs this weekend, so I'm gonna do some reporting from Cabot Cliffs. Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Someone's gotta do it.
Chief Wedge Officer: someone's got someone's gotta do the dirty work for us on on under the cover. So but yeah, big week. well, kind of medium sized week I guess we'd call it. we got a couple of big weeks coming up, but otherwise, you got anything else?
