Dominic Colangelo: Well, hello and welcome back to Under the Covers, a golf podcast where we deep dive each week into the latest PGA Tour winners bag. We are your hosts. My name is Dominic and it is currently Cinco de Mayo. We got the margaritas. I think Matt has his Italian margarita.
Matthew Zampello: I already finished my glass of wine, but.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: You dirty dog. Well, we have Matt here. How you doing, Matt?
Matthew Zampello: Dom, I'm pretty upset. feel like my life is in a tough spot. Somebody named D.O.D. King played Shinnecock on Monday. ⁓ It's a tough spot for where I'm at in life.
Dominic Colangelo: What do you have the issue with the DOD King?
Matthew Zampello: I mean if he can play Shinnokok on USTA media day, anybody can play Shinnokok.
Dominic Colangelo: We should sign up for a media pass. I think it's next on our docket. Well, we also have Kevin here. How we doing, Kev?
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, there you go.
Kevin Spisak: Hey Dom, doing great. I got to play some cool golf at the Lake of the Ozarks at Old Kinderhook last week and then came off a member member got royally boned, but what's new? But congrats to a good friend who did end up winning.
Dominic Colangelo: Right? All credit to the winner. But that sucked.
Kevin Spisak: Yep. Yep. Yep.
Dominic Colangelo: Well, speaking of winners, we have another one, folks. Cameron Young has won his second PGA Tour event and he did it in style. Beat Scotty Sheffler by six strokes, ended with a score of 19 under. Just an unreal tournament for him. Started with a 64, 64, 70, and a 68. Just was completely in control the entire time. ⁓ I don't really know if it got super close, maybe a little bit, a ⁓ tiny bit, but. Overall just dominated completely. You know, we kind of mentioned it last week where it's a little bit of a bomber's paradise. If you can hit it far, you can do a little better. But yeah, Cameron Young is total for the week. He had 269 strokes, which is the lowest for Trump Doral since the redesign in 2014. Just unreal. Matt, what do you have to say about that?
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, it is definitely a Bombers paradise. think you saw who was up on the leaderboard. ⁓ Cam, Scotty, ⁓ they hit it far. Good iron players. I think it was playing 7,700 yards about that from the tips, which is, which is bonkers. I don't think they play full yardage anytime, but I think it can play that far. ⁓ my big takeaway from this weekend is, I mean, the hair, the, the, the, the chest lettuce, the, the, the zipper.
Dominic Colangelo: crazy.
Matthew Zampello: all the way down ⁓ and the cross hanging out. ⁓ We really have to think about if Cam Young should become the next pope. There's going to be a point where we're in, we were just looking for a pope, but I think he could be in the running for that. I think he should skip the requirements, just looks and feel very pope-like.
Kevin Spisak: You
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, the black smoke will shoot up again and we will see Cameron Young sitting there in the on the balcony and you'll still you'll have the the Pope's coat open just showing it.
Matthew Zampello: That's right.
Kevin Spisak: Ha ha ha.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: awesome.
Dominic Colangelo: He is so good at golf.
Matthew Zampello: He is is very off. My favorite, my favorite Cam Young story going back a little bit is when the reporter was like, yeah, you grew up on like the streets of New York and like learning how to play golf. He was like, no, no. He's like, I was my my dad was the pro at Sleepy Hollow Country Club, which is one of like the the nicest country clubs in upstate New York, like not from the streets of New York. Like he's very humble and he's very like honest about who he is, which which I love.
Kevin Spisak: you
Matthew Zampello: like he seems pretty quiet but at least he's like, I mean it seems like he's a generally good dude so it's nice to see those kind of guys win and everything.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, Cam Young is so sick. Watching him learn how to putt has been very fun this year. Just hit absolute bombs. But on Sunday, am I in the minority that thinking that penalty that he got on number two was the most outlandish thing ever? They're playing lift clean in place. The ball moves not on his, he's not actually attempting to hit the ball at that moment. Why?
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: If it's elliptically in place and he placed it there, why can't he just put it back to where it's supposed to be and just move on? That was an unreal par that he wound up making, but that just seemed ridiculous and like not the point.
Dominic Colangelo: It isn't weird. Yeah, the rules official, it looked like he's sitting there like, ⁓ why are you telling me this? I don't want to tell you it's a stroke penalty.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, Patrick Reed would have never.
Matthew Zampello: Hey, you sh- quiet down.
Kevin Spisak: You know that's true. That's 100 % true.
Matthew Zampello: Just cause you're mad LeBron left the Cavs at the Miami Heat a years ago.
Dominic Colangelo: Whoa! Whoa! Damn! It's too real, Matt. It's too real.
Kevin Spisak: What does that have to do with anything? ⁓
Matthew Zampello: No, it felt like one of the penalty. felt like almost like I think it was like the Dustin Johnson penalty at the US Open a few years ago when like he was like he got the penalty for his putter or whatever and the ball was moving. He like didn't really make it move. But according to the rules of golf, like he had to do it. But yeah, I agree with lift clean in place. Like just put it back.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, similar, but I think lift clean in place changes everything because you're manipulating where the ball came to rest.
Dominic Colangelo: You know who follows the rules and is accountable? The Pope.
Matthew Zampello: I think.
Kevin Spisak: Yes, good call.
Matthew Zampello: The Pope. ⁓ I think my big takeaway outside of Cam Young ⁓ this week ⁓ was it felt like ⁓ Cadillac kind of just like, and Dural, like it didn't matter. Like the whole tournament didn't matter. Nobody was there.
Kevin Spisak: Ha ha ha!
Matthew Zampello: and maybe that has something to do with cam young, just like lapping the field the whole time. And it was never really like, like on Saturday I was, I was like, what am going to watch this guy win by a billion? No, I'm going to turn on the, I'm going to turn on the Kentucky Derby and watch that instead. ⁓ so.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ dude, the Kentucky Derby. I completely forgot that was this weekend. Yeah, like I heard about it after the fact, but like that makes perfect sense. mean, like you were just saying there wasn't too many people there. Like Kentucky Derby F1 is in the same city. Like, I don't know that it kind of makes sense now why there it really wasn't. There's also crazy weather, rain delays, it hot.
Matthew Zampello: Really?
Kevin Spisak: There should be enough golf fans in Miami to be able to fill a golf course, like even with all that going on.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, that's true. mean, I did see a tweet where it was side by side comparison of when Liv was there and it was almost, I think it was like even more than half of the fans at PGA. It was pretty crazy, the difference.
Matthew Zampello: just felt like the whole thing was forced. Like it was like, ⁓ is a big tournament. ⁓ should be thinking this is a big tournament, but everything I saw was like, this tournament doesn't really mean anything. Like nobody really cares. And the only reason people are there is for the $20 million purse or whatever it is. So
Dominic Colangelo: Mm-hmm. And then by day one, you knew it wasn't going to anybody else.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, so I don't know. I just felt like, ⁓ and I think we'll get into this a little bit with like Quail Hollow too. Like Quail Hollow, we have another signature event next week or this week. So like, if every event becomes a signature event, is there, is there any signature events?
Kevin Spisak: Yep. Yep. Good point.
Dominic Colangelo: That's a great point. And can you explain to me, just me being naive, like what is the difference between a signature event and a normal, is it just the no cuts? That's like the biggest thing? Or is it?
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, and Kevin, feel free to jump in if I feel like I'm getting something wrong, but I feel like the signature events were created because of Liv, number one. The WGCs used to be signature events in their own way, kind of, and then those were kicked to the can. But basically, signature events were a way that the PGA Tour could give guaranteed money to the biggest players on the PGA Tour without giving them guaranteed money because the way the PGA Tour structured
Kevin Spisak: Yep.
Matthew Zampello: They cannot just give Rory two million dollars for showing up. Like Liv could. Did I get that right, Kevin?
Dominic Colangelo: Mmm.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, a hundred percent. Cause, you know, those guys were signing those guaranteed contracts. And then I think it was reported that like their winnings from each event, like just chipped into their contract. wasn't like an on top winning. It was just like a part of their contract and
Matthew Zampello: Right.
Kevin Spisak: you know, to combat that having like these bigger events with like really large purses, you know, they were able to just, yeah, have a guaranteed basic income, I guess, you know, basic being in quotes, because it's like in the millions, but ⁓ Yeah, having like a guaranteed season, you you require the big names to show up. I think it kind of had like a similar feel to, you know, like the NBA changing their, like, what's it called? Where the players like sit out.
Matthew Zampello: So, ⁓ re-rules, or what is it, ⁓ not tanking, ⁓
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, whatever that the like rest the resting rules like where you can't just like make up an injury because like, you know, fans are paying for tickets, they want to see, you know, LeBron play, ⁓ you know, and then it's like these golf fans, they go to a tournament, they want to see Rory and Scotty and stuff. So it's like a way to guarantee big names in more tournaments, and also like pay bigger dollars.
Dominic Colangelo: No, it's not taking.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Like, like their Callaway is not going to put up or not Callaway Cadillac. I'm sorry. It's not going to put up 30 mil to host an event to have. Yeah. Hopefully Scotty shows up, but we have no idea. Like this is a way that they can guarantee. Okay. Scotty's going to show or like, you know, you're going to get nine or eight of the top 10 players in the world showing up at your event versus before it was kind of like, yeah, based on what they want to play, they'll play. Right. ⁓ so.
Dominic Colangelo: load management.
Matthew Zampello: That's that's that's that's there you go. That's the last five years of golf in a two minute segment for you. ⁓ many more ⁓ of that but.
Kevin Spisak: Yes, load management. Thank you. Mm-hmm. Yeah, think they really, separately but really fast, they also made it quite a lot more difficult for the low-level PGA Tour guys to maintain their status because of the signature events. So they really altered the legacy of the PGA Tour, to just combat what was doing.
Matthew Zampello: But like even Jordan Spieth, like Jordan Spieth is not even really qualified for some of these events. Like he's getting sponsor exemptions from Cadillac or AT&T or whatever to play in these events. So.
Dominic Colangelo: I was curious how that was working. But like, is that gonna happen with any other player? Like, could that happen? Because not only is he getting sponsorship exemptions, he's on like every featured group for ESPN
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: You know what I mean? Like, and he doesn't, like he played well the first day and then choked. It's very unfortunate.
Kevin Spisak: And nothing comes to top of my mind right now on big names, but I know for sure that it has happened and will continue to happen.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, think this week it was Jordan, Keith Mitchell got a sponsor's exemption, and I have one other person, but I can't remember who, but I don't think they did anything with it. So.
Dominic Colangelo: Well, we can't talk about Doral without talking about some of these players like Alex Fitzpatrick, man. Good for him. That was fun. Out of all the things that happened, that was very fun. Bogey free 66, you know, like that's crazy.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, that's huge. It made our episode about talking like he we kind of belittled him a little bit or and by we I mean me saying that, you know, Matt just like carried him and then he just like totally showed up and they balled out.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. He validated. But I think the craziest that I saw was he again going back to the whole signature event thing. The winner in Turkey this week where he was going to play took home like $450,000. And for Alex Fitzpatrick's whatever he made, whatever he did, T10 or whatever it was, think he took home, it was like double that. He took home like a million bucks or something.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm. You
Matthew Zampello: It's crazy. like that's Yeah, I think I saw had done the conversion so crazy you know differences in just What what he's playing for now, but yeah kind of? Kind of I'm sure the the PGA tour PGA tour lower level guys are Furious that he got his PGA tour card through whatever event now. He's in all these signature events and everything
Kevin Spisak: Did you do the euros conversion?
Dominic Colangelo: ride.
Matthew Zampello: So that's sick.
Kevin Spisak: So last week we talked about hole number 10 and how many Eagles were going to be on the course. had a little bet. Dom took the over, I think on, did we say two and a half? ⁓ and I took the under, ⁓ it looks like there was only one and it was on the third round and the PGA tour website just gives absolutely no information and I cannot figure out who it is. I asked Google and like, there's no highlights about it.
Dominic Colangelo: You
Kevin Spisak: ⁓ I asked asked Grok and Grok just gave me Bubba Watson in 2015 made an eagle. And then I said 2026 and it said nothing specific stands out. So it's on the PGA Tour of Stats website, but I cannot figure out who did it.
Dominic Colangelo: Really?
Matthew Zampello: you That's your problem. asking rock. mean, you got to ask. It's like, that's like asking, uh, you know, Patrick Reed for advice.
Kevin Spisak: Okay. I don't get the connection whatsoever, but I'll take insult just because you said Patrick Reed.
Dominic Colangelo: Yay. ⁓ Yeah, we on the on the note of Kevin making bad decisions. No, I'm just kidding. You actually you end up choosing the wrong, older, sexier, classier man in Justin Rose for one and done. Adam Scott came out of nowhere on on Sunday without was like 64. He would he was he couldn't miss.
Matthew Zampello: think where Kevin made the mistake was choosing a guy who's playing irons manufactured by a car manufacturer, not an actual iron manufacturer.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, yeah, definitely a big mistake, big mistake, but it felt like a cool, cool pick at the time. I was looking into the McLaren clubs. They look awesome, but 375 bucks a pop per iron is just ridiculous. Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: Per iron? Holy smokes. Maybe we can go into that one of these days. One of those specs. I thought you were gonna say 375 for the bag. Like, man, that's crazy.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. No. Per- PerlouivilleSlugger375. ⁓ ⁓ I think we got a hit on Nelly though. ⁓ She might be the best golfer in the world right now. Like if you're gonna look at Scotty, Rory, Matt Fitz, Kim Young. Like I would put Nelly up against any of those. She literally hasn't finished. Like there's been, I think Lauren Coughlin and another girl, I forget who, has been the only people that have beaten her this year, all year. She's either gotten second or one.
Dominic Colangelo: Yep.
Matthew Zampello: every tournament she's played in. Which is bananas.
Dominic Colangelo: Unreal.
Kevin Spisak: gotta be her putter that thing is so sick
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, she's I ⁓ I'm hopeful that she can pull off something like, like she could have one of the all time best years in all of golf history, which would be which would be sweet. It'd be sweet to watch that.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, that's cool. She, so we mentioned it a little bit last week when we were going through her bag and stuff, where if you want to watch someone and emulate a swing, just go to the LPGA. like, man, I'm not sure how much, how good on mechanics you are with golf swings. Maybe Kevin, you can kind of give some insight, but like, does she just have one those robotic swings like Ludwig where it's just hard for her to, to like, to miss? Like it's just so boom boom.
Matthew Zampello: down the street.
Dominic Colangelo: or is he just that good?
Matthew Zampello: Well, I think it's definitely talent. ⁓ But yeah, I mean, she has a she has a swing that there's not a ton of moving parts like she's not. I look at it like Tony Finau or something, right? He's got it feels like he's got like a ton of moving parts in his swing a little bit and he can be streaky. And I mean, you're watching Jordan doing all this like bullcrap. mean, he's like doing all this stuff at the top of the swing, like no wonder he is not going to drive it well. Like Nelly's just like
Dominic Colangelo: Mm-hmm.
Matthew Zampello: It feels like she's just backing through and it's like the club the club head can't get out of sync.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, I think it's a little bit longer than Lubik's swing, but similar, I guess. I could see the connection that you're making down.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, like I like how you said, it's very simplified. Like you mentioned, Ron before, ⁓ whenever we were talking about his, where he swings so hard all the time. And know, the short backswing and everything too, they're like, it's just, there's so much going on. It's hard to replicate all the time. So yeah, that makes perfect sense. She's so good.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, Nellie and Cam are really ruining the format of our show here. ⁓ We constantly have duplicate winners and we got to go into someone else's bag.
Dominic Colangelo: yeah, this will be a fun one. So we're gonna go into our very own Matt's bag here, slip under the covers for old Matty Poo. So I think the chief wedge officer.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, we can Chief, that's what they call me, the Chief Wedge Officer. ⁓ I'm a big wedge guy. I love having custom stamped wedges. Part of my trademark, I would say. But yeah, we'll start at the top of the bag. Well, we'll start with the bag in general. I play the Titles Link's Legend bag, the leather Titles bag. Big fan of that. It's been great. Good for the cart.
Kevin Spisak: Chief Wedge Officer.
Matthew Zampello: And then I have a ping crazy light that I walk with. So in case I, know, I love walking. don't love walking in June and July in Texas.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, that's a great call.
Matthew Zampello: So, start at the top of the bag. ⁓ Shout out Pasa Tiempo, ⁓ one of me and Dom's favorite golf courses ever. ⁓ Great day he had there. ⁓ I am playing right now ⁓ the Quantum ⁓ Triple Diamond Max with a Ventus Blue 6X Velocor Plus TR Shaft. ⁓ So, and then ⁓ all my grips, you'll see are ⁓ the standard golf pride ⁓ regular, but I have the ribbed version. So there's a nice little rib that goes down the backside of all these grips. That's right. Right.
Kevin Spisak: your pleasure.
Dominic Colangelo: Is it like the align, like it's just ribbed instead of the align strip?
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, there's just a there's just a rib in there. So, ⁓ yeah, I know, Kevin, you probably have some takes on my shaft and the club and everything. But the thing I've noticed about this is I can hit this thing all over the face and it still goes the yardage that I'm expecting it to go. ⁓ It's been super forgiving. I went from the TSR three with a Ventus blue Velocore. And this has been uber forgiving. ⁓
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓
Matthew Zampello: way more forgiving than that. I wouldn't say I've picked up a ton of yardage ⁓ with this over the TSR, but I would say it's been way more forgiving and a little straighter off the tee than the TSR. So very, very happy with it. ⁓ But yeah, it's been good so far. Love it.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, so you think that AI-designed face is helping you?
Matthew Zampello: You know what? I will say the Callaway stuff is marketing. Their marketing is great. They use AI. They use whatever. Their names are stupid. All that sort of good stuff. But the proof is in the pudding. I can hit this thing all over the face and it still goes straight. So I'm happy with it.
Dominic Colangelo: This is where we insert the clip of Matt talking so much shit on their names and quantum and everything.
Matthew Zampello: trying to I know, I do that and I have lot of cowlily clubs in the bag, so tough scene. ⁓ But, ⁓ three wood. ⁓
Dominic Colangelo: Wait, can I interrupt? So can we go through your shaft real quick? How did you land on the Ventus Blue 6X? Were you playing and kind of going through simulator or range? Were you kind of testing things out?
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: .
Matthew Zampello: Okay. Yeah, I am lucky enough to have some people at my home course that have some access into shafts and just general testing of stuff and our head pro and some of the members. One of the members that I play a lot of golf with used to work on the tour truck at Nike. So has some friends in the industry and able to play, able to test a bunch of different shafts. So I... to be ⁓ Diamana guy, ⁓ whiteboard shaft. ⁓ it would have been when the TSR came out. So Kevin, when was the TSR come out? ⁓
Kevin Spisak: That'd be two miles ago, so six years ago. Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ Yeah. was when I got introduced to the Ventus and I was in the Ventus blue and it was a great shaft for me. I feel like the Ventus blue is like the perfect kick point for me. It just feels good. The head feels super stable and I think I just got super used to the profile. So when I went shopping for this driver, it was really not looking for anything outside of the Ventus lineup. But the big thing I wanted to try was the new TR and I wanted to see if the vent is black. I feel like I have gotten a little bit faster club head speed wise ⁓ since I got the TSR and then now into this one. So I tried the vent is black and it just felt terrible. Like it felt like the club head didn't snap through the ball. It felt like I couldn't move it left if I wanted to like couldn't hit a draw if I needed to. and just, and I would hit like a weird right ball every once in a while. It felt like, and just felt super uncomfortable in my hands. I think I played like one round with it and just, was quickly out of the bag. ⁓ but the Ventus, I did go from the Ventus blue regular six X to the Ventus blue TR and the TR is the profile that I believe sits between the blue and the black. I might be wrong, but, ⁓ I feel like this has been really good for me.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ Which I love, so can't complain about it.
Dominic Colangelo: Nice.
Kevin Spisak: We've to get you in the gym and get you swinging fast enough for the black.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, I do not. I have a desk job. do not. I do not going fast enough for the Ventus Black. ⁓ It also is cut down to 45 inches, I believe. So it's not a super long driver. ⁓ You know, I like to think I'm 6'8", but I'm really not. So we love our short kinks.
Kevin Spisak: Ha ha.
Dominic Colangelo: We love our short king. Sweet, let's see that three wood.
Matthew Zampello: All right, one of my favorite clubs in the bag, Three Wood. ⁓ You know, been toying around with the idea of a mini driver, but not there with it yet. But it is something that's been in the back of my mind. ⁓ Specifically course, course specific. But Blue Jack National in Texas, one of my favorite golf courses of all time. ⁓ Really cool track. If you can ever go play it, would highly recommend it.
Dominic Colangelo: is my favorite head cover that you have too. I want one so bad.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, it's sweet. So Maverick, Maverick Sub-Zero 3 Wood with a whole glob of lead tape right on the hosel ⁓ to get the swing weight where I wanted it. Shaft? No idea. ⁓
Kevin Spisak: You That looks like one of the Atmos shafts.
Matthew Zampello: It was one of like the Fuji-Kura Motre or whatever it was back in the day. Yeah, Mottori. So crazy story. When I was in college, I had a jet speed three wood and I was in Las Vegas and I hit it and the face cracked. TaylorMade had a kingdom on the Las Vegas strip. My golf coach called up TaylorMade. They said, go to the kingdom in Las Vegas. They'll get you a new three wood. ⁓
Kevin Spisak: ⁓ motore. Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: the guy was like, just open the shaft drawer and he's like, what do you want? And I was like, and I knew this was a good shaft at the time. This would have been 2015, 2016. So a crazy long time ago. And I was like, yeah, that one. Every spec has completely rubbed off the golf club. I have no idea. It's definitely an X. I know it's an X. And then for where it sits in the bag, if you can see that, I don't know if you can, there's also rub marks for where it sits in the bag. I've had it in there for so long.
Dominic Colangelo: Whoa.
Matthew Zampello: So, ⁓ but I trust this thing with my life. ⁓ My favorite shot with this is the big, big high cut at like 250 out landing into a par five. It's one of my favorite shots.
Dominic Colangelo: It's silky. Swing is awesome. That's crazy. just sent you to the, you said the tailor-made kingdom. What is that?
Matthew Zampello: So.
Kevin Spisak: So.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. It's just like a fitting place that Taylor made has. Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: okay, gotcha. That's fun.
Kevin Spisak: So the heel weight, don't you feel like that would make you draw the ball?
Matthew Zampello: Maybe. Honestly, it was probably when I didn't know a ton about golf clubs and dynamics and I just knew I believe this shaft. Maybe it's the head. I don't know. It's super light and the swing weight was way off. So I think I play everything pretty standard around like D3 or D4. ⁓ And I just wanted to get the swing weight where it needed to be to like basically match my driver. So I just threw a bunch of glob of lead tape on it. And this lead tape has been on here since I had the club. So.
Dominic Colangelo: Dang it. Very cool.
Kevin Spisak: wild. I've never seen anything like that.
Matthew Zampello: Pretty nasty. Yeah, yeah. three wood ⁓ golfers are weird animals. They just stick with what they know.
Kevin Spisak: It also came out in 2020.
Matthew Zampello: The Maverick, yeah. It honestly is great. Like I've tried other three woods. I love how flat the bottom is. Like I feel like it glides through the ground very well. It doesn't get stuck. I don't like three woods that have a ton of stuff going on on the bottom because I feel like it gets caught up. So, but yeah, hit it good. And I've tried to hit other three woods and I don't hit it. I, you know, I hit it just about the same. So, you get rid of it.
Dominic Colangelo: There you go. That's all you need.
Kevin Spisak: can't remember which club it was, I think it was maybe the R15. So that would, I think that'd be right about the time that you got that shaft. I want to say there was like a TaylorMade sponsored video with some like British guy kept saying motore like over and over and over again. So it's like really been burned into my memory.
Matthew Zampello: And I Yeah. So I will say, obviously I didn't get this head from the TaylorMade truck. So this shaft was originally on, I believe it was a Rocketballs 2 by the time, by when they gave me it. And then it's been transferred over to this head, ⁓ obviously. So, and I do still have that Rocketballs 2 head, which that was, that thing was a rocket ship.
Kevin Spisak: Nice.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Rocketballs, I think, is like one of the greatest clubs ever created.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, I remember I still remember that video DJ where he's like our lemon get into one and he hits it and he carries his three with like 320 Okay, so hybrid pineapple number two Where missus chief web is wedge officer and I got engaged on the green of number 18 It's been through its times has has some fixes in here, but love it
Kevin Spisak: You
Dominic Colangelo: Missed the birdie putt.
Matthew Zampello: I did miss the birdie put. TaylorMade Stealth Hybrid, 3 Hybrid, 19 degrees. ProForce V2 X Stiff Hybrid Shaft. One of the greatest shafts of all time, ProForce V2. Can't get it out of my bag. Love this thing, the ProForce V2. Yeah, Kevin, that's gotta get you all riled up inside seeing a ProForce V2, huh?
Dominic Colangelo: Whoa. That's cool.
Kevin Spisak: stiff boy there. Yep. Yep. I, ⁓ I almost bought one on a SIM, ⁓ I guess 2021. Yeah. 2021. ⁓ When I was getting fitted for clubs, was waiting for my driver to come in and the club fitter let me take out the sim with that shaft for my bachelor party. So I played the whole weekend with it and that was a stiff, stiff freaking shaft. I think I was playing like the 70 gram X and it just, I just over spun the ball because I'm a terrible golfer and needed something to help keep, keep the spin down.
Matthew Zampello: I this is an 85X. Something like that. ⁓ Funny story. ⁓ Quick, Rick Massengale got third in the Masters in the 70s. I play a lot of golf with that guy. Shout out Rick Massengale if you're listening. I don't think you are because you're like 80, but I love you. He saw me pull this out of the bag during the club championship and he goes, that's a nice little weapon you got there seeing this like lime green shaft. So I thought.
Kevin Spisak: Nice. You
Matthew Zampello: That's always the comment that sticks out.
Dominic Colangelo: That's a sweet shout out. And then you smoked them.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. He's 80, so I felt bad. ⁓ I actually have my driving iron here. So I do switch out the hybrid every once in a while for the TaylorMade UDI 2-Iron. ⁓ Really love this club. Been in my bag forever. I just don't feel like I'm going to get a better 2-Iron than this one. Like it goes through the turf well. It's hot off the face.
Kevin Spisak: You
Matthew Zampello: It hits like little I call them gnome killers when I hit it. It just does not get that high above the ground Hazardous project X in there six point five ⁓ Handcrafted a little bit of lead tape again Kevin just to get the swing weight where I want it. So in a different
Kevin Spisak: Nice.
Dominic Colangelo: hands.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, it's a little bit interesting of a location, but that's a really nice shaft with the handcrafted. What's the weight on it?
Matthew Zampello: It is a 105 gram. Yeah, I hit this thing super low. I'm going to Scotland this year. We'll be changing out the hybrid for this for sure. And just going to hit little bullets was a great tool for bandin last year to use. So love that club. man, I got this club, the UDI, I believe if I'm not mistaken. ⁓
Kevin Spisak: Nice, nice.
Dominic Colangelo: When'd you get it?
Matthew Zampello: Somebody that we did What's in the Bag on the Pocket had one of these. ⁓ He won the Genesis.
Dominic Colangelo: under the covers.
Matthew Zampello: under the covers.
Kevin Spisak: here. ⁓ Jacob Bridgman. ⁓
Dominic Colangelo: then scroll down.
Matthew Zampello: Jacob Bridgman, he is this as a foreign, I believe. If I'm not mistaken.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ Because the reason I'm curious, so whenever you decided to use the two iron, ⁓ I feel like.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, he does.
Dominic Colangelo: Let's see, how do I word this? People are more comfortable using a hybrid, a seven wood, a nine wood, rather than an iron. Were you using a two iron, like, so you can use a higher iron that was a little bit easier to hit? Or were you looking for that compared to a hybrid?
Matthew Zampello: looking for this shot. like at let's just take Scotland or band in for an example. I'm looking for a really low shot off the tee that I can keep no more than 20 feet off the ground. And I can't do that with a hybrid. But with this, I can easily do that. It doesn't get more than 20 feet off the ground. So it stays out of the wind. Kind of that that sort of thing. So it's what?
Dominic Colangelo: Okay, and like, you know that? Did you know that before hitting it? Or is it kind of like, ooh, let me get this two iron in the bag, hit it, and you're like, ⁓ these are always going low, let me keep that.
Matthew Zampello: No, I built this specifically for that. So I built it for super tough, tight shots, tight courses. don't really know about any other courses I played it at. But yeah, it in the bag sometime.
Dominic Colangelo: OK, cool. Nice.
Kevin Spisak: two trivia questions. What year did that come out and what does UDI stand for?
Matthew Zampello: 2018.
Dominic Colangelo: think there's some kind of HIPAA violation if we answer that one right?
Kevin Spisak: Ha
Matthew Zampello: UDI stands for
Dominic Colangelo: Wait, I have it. Don't answer it. Utility driving iron?
Kevin Spisak: What? No.
Dominic Colangelo: I thought I nailed that.
Kevin Spisak: You got two out of three.
Matthew Zampello: 2 out of 3 so it's under driving iron. Ultra driving iron.
Dominic Colangelo: did I not get?
Kevin Spisak: Pretty close. Don, what's your guess on the year?
Dominic Colangelo: the year? Ooh.
Kevin Spisak: Mm-hmm.
Matthew Zampello: It's gotta be like 2016.
Dominic Colangelo: Give me like 20, give me, let me go under. Let me go 2014. Sick. Just like the random throw a's, yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Nailed it. Dom always gets these questions right. ⁓
Matthew Zampello: Wow. I actually got a pretty I'm surprised how old my bag is. ⁓
Kevin Spisak: And yeah, like you said, if you find something, you got to stick with it, you know, until you have a reason. Yeah, so the second answer of the trivia is ultimate driving iron.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. ⁓
Dominic Colangelo: Which, does it stand for?
Matthew Zampello: What? ultimate
Dominic Colangelo: Ultimate interesting that they use that okay
Kevin Spisak: I'm in marketing, baby.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ funny other story about this, this speed pocket. So these speed pockets are super hot. Taylor made went through this whole thing where they did these speed pockets. ⁓ in college, I played one round with a thing of speed pocket irons because I thought I wanted to hit it further. I think I hit it over every green that day. ⁓ they banana land far. So don't have these, don't have these in your regular irons.
Kevin Spisak: Ha
Dominic Colangelo: Really?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. The, original rocket blades and the rocket balls, speed blades and all of that, that is like one of the highest moments of like my golf obsession was just like wanting those. Yeah. I was caddying and like every player at the country club and we were a tailor made place. Everyone had those and just just hitting bombs all the time. And then the SLDR came out and then they started hitting bombs with 14 degree drivers. That was, that was fun.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Yeah, this is pretty nutty time. Okay, going on the irons. So I'm a Mizuno guy through and through. Played Mizunos forever. I think as long as I can remember, I played Mizunos except for a couple of flirting rounds that I've had. I had a pair of Nike blades, I believe was my very first set of good irons. I was out of those pretty quickly and into some Mizuno. So love Mizuno. ⁓ Love how these, I don't even know which ones these are, the 243s are. ⁓ I went from the Mizuno Blades into the 243s. ⁓ Maybe that was about three years ago. yeah, just wanted some more forgiveness. ⁓ Love them. And then with Mizuno, Nippin 120X. ⁓ Nippin comes standard on Mizuno's for no extra cost. So love that.
Kevin Spisak: You Jeff. Beautiful. Those shafts are awesome. Did you go from the 221s into those or did you have an older like MP line Mizuno?
Matthew Zampello: No, I think I did go from the 221s into these. Yeah, it was pretty quickly from, no, I think it was maybe it's NP 20s. I can't remember. ⁓ to be honest, I traded them in, which I, which I regret doing. I regret trading trading in iron sets because I think I got like 150, 190 bucks form at the time that were off of these. And it's like, man, I should have just kept those because they're like not a collector's item, but kind of.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, and your Nike blades would have been worth some dough nowadays. You do? Are they the VR pros? ⁓ that's awesome. Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: I do have my Nike blades. They are, yes. So they are worth some dough. I've had multiple people offer me upwards of a couple thousand dollars for those and I haven't got some yet. No, for sure. ⁓ Yeah.
Kevin Spisak: Damn. Nice. The VR pros are so cool.
Dominic Colangelo: You can never sell them. Those, those Mizuno's are incredible. So.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ yeah, Dom, you felt those. They're buttery.
Dominic Colangelo: Dude, so Matt traveled to Minnesota to play a couple rounds and I hit an eight iron and it was possibly one of the better eight irons I've hit. And it's, I was like, what in the world? Like how is that so smooth? Like, you know, it could have been like a nice placement of the ball on the, on the face, but it's because of the, correct me if I'm wrong, cause I'm going off the memory, but it's, there's a copper lining. on the inside and it, is it strictly just to make it softer or is there forgiveness in that too?
Kevin Spisak: and sound.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, I believe it's just, yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: feeling sound. Dude, ⁓ my gosh, that could be my next iron set. Like they're so sick.
Matthew Zampello: They're great.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, you gotta get the M13s that just came out. That would be the replacement. They're not doing like the 243 or 223 how it was before. there's the S3 would be a better player's iron, the S1 would blades, then the M13 and M15, they're pretty sick.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, the new lines are
Dominic Colangelo: Mm-hmm.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. I really want to go to the foundry for my next set of irons, which is the Mizuno's fitting facility out near Atlanta. That's my next conquest. So I will be making the trip out to Hotlanta, get some Ludigris's chicken and beer while I'm out there. you know what I'm talking about.
Dominic Colangelo: There it is. Hell yeah I do.
Kevin Spisak: It'd be incredible. Real quick Mizuno thing. ⁓ During the member member I played last weekend, I have the JPX 925 forged and there was a par three. I like totally miss it. It was so far off the toe, but it was like a perfect shot. And I was like, damn, I almost missed the ball. But like the technology, just so much forgiveness. And, you know, right when I hit it, I just shout, was like, technology shot.
Matthew Zampello: It's so good.
Kevin Spisak: And then Kenny was like, and brought to you by Mizuno.
Matthew Zampello: Kenny Riley, baby. ⁓ So I, so I play Mizuno's ⁓ four iron through nine iron. So I actually play Vokey pitching wedge, gap wedge, sand wedge and lob wedge. So like I said, big stamper of the club. ⁓ This is my pitching wedge. I'm a big vibes guy. ⁓ Every day at work when people ask me how I'm doing, I just say I'm
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: We love Kenny.
Matthew Zampello: just vibing. ⁓ So that's where that's got.
Dominic Colangelo: Nice.
Kevin Spisak: What does an older person come back with when you say that?
Matthew Zampello: Shut up. That's what they tell. Or they say, Matt, what the heck? Yeah, I'm always vibing and I'm a big shocker guy. So I love I love throwing up a shocker. So I have a shocker stamp in there. Yeah, forty six degree 10 F grind.
Kevin Spisak: You
Matthew Zampello: I'm going to my Gap Wedge. ⁓ So these are, ⁓ I'm a Texas A ⁓ grad. Me and Dom were roommates there back in the day. So stamped a little Aggies thing in that one. ⁓ And that is an ⁓ 08F grind with a little Gap stamped on the toe, which I like to show off every once in a while. On my wedges, I play The Tor 130s I believe it's been so rubbed off over the time, but I know they're heavier and They're they're not X. They're I dropped on to stiff in my wedges so
Kevin Spisak: like it.
Dominic Colangelo: Arguably one of your better, one of your best stamping jobs. That thing is so sweet.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ for sure. ⁓ This one is my favorite wedge, I would say. Well, my favorite non around. I don't know. One of my favorite stamps, I guess. Let's put it that way. 54 ⁓ s grind, kind of my chipping wedge, I call it like my my straight face chipping wedge. If I have to chip around the greens, ⁓ I'm notorious for holding little chip shots off the green that are like right. You know, the one where you just kind of bump it a little bit goes in. I'm a big pull the pin guy from Off in the Green and just stunt on people. ⁓ But You Owe Me a 10 Second Car ⁓ stamped on here. favorite movie, all time, Fast and Furious, shout out Vin Diesel. You me a 10 second car.
Dominic Colangelo: Love it. doesn't matter what's under the hood. Only thing that matters is who's behind the wheel.
Matthew Zampello: That's right. And then the best in show, the lucky lady, the sweet, sweet, sweet wedge, ⁓ the K-Star. So I have for amateur use only stamped on there. And so we'll play on Scotty Cameron there. ⁓ Wedgeworks K-Star grind ⁓ with a little L. co-stamped on there. ⁓ So this is the triple grind. So you have the leading edge relief, kind of that big wide sole, and then you use some heel edge relief so I can open the club up. ⁓ Kind of my bunker wedge, ⁓ my go-to bunker, I can hit it as hard as I want out of the bunker and it feels like it just comes out super high and soft. ⁓ The biggest learning thing I've had to do with this is I have to be aggressive out of the bunkers. I think with the ⁓ grind I used to have, I had to kind of be real soft with my hands. This I have to swing super aggressively through the ball to get it up. If I don't, I actually have left some in the bunker with this. So that's been the biggest change. But once you get used to it, I feel like I can't go back because you can swing really hard at it. That's the wedges.
Dominic Colangelo: I'm trying to think if I would prefer that. It'd be really nice to be able to swing harder out of the bunk.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, it was definitely a change. That was the biggest thing. Like it was definitely something I had to get used to. It took me a long, long time to figure it out. But once I did, it feels like, okay, I know why Tor pros use this wedge. I know why they like stuff like that, because you can be aggressive with it to like short shots, which is super nice.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, Dom, think Matt's pulling out of some nicer sand than me and you are used to. I think me and you would be hitting skull screaming, just blazing shots over every green.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, that's a good point. Matt, is that the one that you grinded yourself?
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ no. So I have a, I have a bag, a tour bag full of wedges back there. ⁓ and I, I did some grinding on my own. I, I still like that one. I'm thinking about taking a little bit of a heel off of it, ⁓ in the next coming weeks. ⁓ but, ⁓ I, gotta get with my tour truck guy, ⁓ that's at our, at our club and, and have him do it. Cause he's the expert. I'm just an amateur, trying to grind my own wedges. So. ⁓ The one I, the first one I did looks pretty rough. Right. ⁓ Torrey Pines for my putter cover. ⁓ I'm a new mallet kind of guy. ⁓ You know, call it the Met Gala, but I'm pissing people off. I love this putter. ⁓ I recently, I recently have been in the depths of putting woes.
Kevin Spisak: Every expert starts somewhere,
Dominic Colangelo: There you go.
Matthew Zampello: all time putting was as I call it. I was a big Scotty Cameron Newport two guy for a long time. ⁓ Toyed around with a Scotty Cameron fastback for a while. That didn't feel really good. ⁓ Went to a ⁓ you know went to ⁓ a face balance putter but I've really found this one operates a little bit more like my blade with it have some toe hang in there so I can feel like I release it. ⁓ have a super stroke grip on there. ⁓ I am following the Scotty Cameron school of putting, he was the claw, ⁓ from within 10 feet and then outside of 10 feet, I'm back to standard. ⁓ so I've really developed a really nice little crab dance when I make a putt with the claw to go pick it up out of the hole. No, it's, it's kind of, do this little thing and then, and then I pick it up like a little claw.
Kevin Spisak: you
Dominic Colangelo: Of course you do. Of course you do.
Kevin Spisak: you do a little demo for us.
Matthew Zampello: So my regular group hates it because I've started making lot more putts. Yeah, yeah. So I got to throw some stamping on this putter. I think I'm to do a little initials here or something like that.
Dominic Colangelo: You gotta hit him with that one. That's so funny, dude. So this is new new, when did you get this?
Matthew Zampello: I would say I got this about two months ago. And at the Colonial Member Guest, I told myself, I'm going to commit to the Claw. I was practicing with it. I was always a cross-handed guy for a really long time, but I felt like my miss cross-handed was a pull. And under pressure, under the gun, I would pull putts. And I hated it with all of my being. I have one very, very bad one that I missed in ⁓ a Ryder Cup format on hole 16. I would have closed him out on hole 16 and I pulled a three footer, missed it, would have closed him out. We went to the next hole, ⁓ one, one, and he ended up tying me. No, please. Yeah. ⁓ So, but yeah, no, the claw has been great. I really stopped pulling putts. It's really, the claws really helped me within five feet. I feel like I make a lot more five footers ⁓ with the claw, so.
Dominic Colangelo: That's insane. And it's working for you now, though. You're not allowed to make fun of me for a long putter anymore.
Matthew Zampello: No, I am not.
Kevin Spisak: So Matt, question with that putter. ⁓ I've had a 7S in the past, and I felt like when I set it on the ground, the club just like, flaps open. Have you noticed that at all?
Matthew Zampello: Mm-hmm. You know, it's funny you say that because I, maybe I'm the other way around, but I feel like when I had, ⁓ here actually, let me grab it. Right. So here's the putter I was toying around with is a Scotty Cameron Select, you know, I don't know, fastback, squareback, whatever, but it's face balanced. My problem with this is I felt like this flopped closed on me when I set it on the ground. So maybe it does flop open in all honesty, but for some reason it looks square to me. versus what this looked like. So, it's all that matters. But yeah, I don't know. It's been good for me. So, we're sticking with it. This is the putter that's going to Scotland with me.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, that's all that matters. Yeah, when I...
Dominic Colangelo: Nice.
Kevin Spisak: Nice. When I had my 7S, I was practicing with the putting mirror. And looking back up in the mirror, I was questioning how I was holding the putter. I like, seriously? I had the shaft, it was leaning backwards because that's how the putter felt natural to sit on the ground. So I was adding a crap ton of loft, totally unintentionally. And I thought it was straight up and down.
Dominic Colangelo: There you go.
Matthew Zampello: Mm-hmm. Hmm.
Kevin Spisak: So hopefully I put any thoughts in your head.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, I feel like now you did, but... And then I play the... Thanks a lot, Kev. ⁓ Well, you know what I'm really worried is now I'm going to go and I'm going to be like, this club's open. And I'm going to like miss. I'm going to push him out to punch.
Kevin Spisak: You
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓
Kevin Spisak: Well, think it was just like the it was just like the way it sat on the ground. Like you could you could hold it in your hands and hold it square. But it was like the the little like fangs come off the ground so they don't hit the ground in your putting stroke. So then I felt like when the putter just like you drop the putter, it would just open.
Matthew Zampello: One of the tips that I got from my tour truck guy is he always used to put a little bit of lead tape on the edges of putters. So this side and this side, because putters are made round on the bottom to basically work for lie angles that are plus and minus two and three degrees on either side. So what he always told me to do was put a little bit of lead tape on both sides. Basically it makes the putter flat and you can remove some of that when you flop it off the ground, it'll just sit straight.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, interesting. have to toy around with that. Yeah, I still have that 7S. It's one of the putters. I loved it so much when I did play with it, although I had that weird realization. I felt like I made a crap ton of putts, and I can't bring myself to get rid of it.
Matthew Zampello: which is a cool tip.
Dominic Colangelo: Very cool.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, so, ⁓ and I love the face insert. The face insert, I love how soft it is for really fast greens. That's one of the things I really like about it. It does not work very well on slow greens, but I'm not looking to play slow greens. I'm looking to play fast greens. ⁓ Something about my competition. My competition. And the ball, I ⁓ play the Pro V1. I've played the Pro V1 for a long time.
Dominic Colangelo: Good for you.
Kevin Spisak: ⁓ Congrats on all your success.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: But I have been flirting with the Pro B1X ⁓ left dash to be specific So picked up a left dash The other day and I hit it great had a great day with it Didn't feel like I lost any spin around the greens either. So was very impressed by the left dash so I'll have to keep you guys updated on that one because that might I might bring a couple boxes with me to Scotland to see you know, take some spin off the ball on the high wind days or something that.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, let us know that and then also the putting. So I'm very curious, but so on the topic of left dash, I played in a scramble tournament on Monday and you got a little like $10, $15 gift card to the pro shop. Essentially you get a free slew of balls and there's one sleeve of left dashes left. So was like, I mean, I gotta be like Matt today. And then it was like hurricane sized winds all day.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: So I have no idea if I was playing well or not. Like there's one, I'm even 30 yards left of the green and I flush one and then I was 20 yards right of the green. And I'm like, was that the wind or did I, was that bad? I have no idea. So I still have them, didn't lose them, which is awesome. So I'll have to, I'm gonna play them in my next round and see how it goes. So I'll let you know too.
Matthew Zampello: Talking about some bad putters, not looking at myself, no, kind of myself. ⁓ Let's get into some golf news, if you will. I think the first thing we gotta hit on is Tony Finau's putter at the Truist Championship. ⁓ Dom, what's your thoughts?
Dominic Colangelo: Hmm
Kevin Spisak: Yeah
Dominic Colangelo: I think he needs to learn how to use it. That picture was atrocious. What was he trying to do? Like the way he was holding it, it's like, how are you not uncomfortable? Like he's like anchoring. It was bad. I want to see him do well. So if it helps him, helps him. But I don't think, I don't think the putter, I don't think that's going to change anything for him.
Kevin Spisak: stick.
Matthew Zampello: Kevin, would you ever fit somebody into a potter like that?
Kevin Spisak: No, absolutely not. There's no way ⁓ he looks uncomfortable. like, I'd be willing to bet he changes in four weeks.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, because he's usually like a he uses a really small putter, doesn't he? Like he's bent way over typically.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, and he's played a Blade for a good while and then this year he's playing the Scottsdale Tech putter that we've talked a lot about that I think is a pretty cool concept. And once his face, Corey Connors has also played with this style, like onset putter that Ping makes. But yeah, Tony is in the dungeon of ⁓ putter woes right now, as Matt would say.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, he's he's just he's searching for help for sure. He's he's searching for something. You don't you don't just you don't just go to something like that if you're, you know, liking what you're seeing coming off the butter, butter face.
Kevin Spisak: How wild would it be if he just goes on a tear and wins two tournaments this year doing that?
Dominic Colangelo: He's first in strokes gang on the green. That'd be crazy.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. You see a bunch of guys doing it, ⁓ it's kind of like side.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: Should that be our bet this week is if he actually uses the belly?
Matthew Zampello: I think he said he's gonna use it.
Dominic Colangelo: You think it's locked in, you think? We'll find out.
Matthew Zampello: I think, yeah.
Kevin Spisak: It sounded like it,
Dominic Colangelo: But anyways.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ We got John Rom. ⁓ He has agreed with the PG or the DP World Tour to be able to play on the DP Tour again. The biggest thing there is it keeps him Ryder Cup eligible so he can still play on the Ryder Cup teams. That's the big piece of news there. But.
Kevin Spisak: So what was the agreement he made with them?
Matthew Zampello: They didn't say. ⁓ so I think the agreement.
Dominic Colangelo: This is similar to P-Read.
Matthew Zampello: Well, P-Read's different because he's technically not on live anymore. Think with the live guys, they said the DP world said you had to play at least six events on the DP world. And think John was against that for some reason. I don't know. He's so weird. He's just like, he's made the probably the worst career decisions his entire career, like just terrible decision after terrible decision.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah. Yeah, while writing what, 300 million to the bank. it's like, they've panned out for him, okay. He's got a green jacket.
Matthew Zampello: So.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: They're not horrible. It's good for his wallet, not for his playing career. I think it's a better way to reward it.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: But speaking of bad decisions, let's talk about our next one.
Matthew Zampello: Our boy Mr. YouTube golf and self Bryson Duchambeau So with live golfs, Don't know what you want. What do you want to call it demise lame duck season? I don't know whatever you want to what do you want to call it? He said he's going to only play events where he is wanted It reminds me of that hunter what's that hunter That that song I want to make you feel wanted ⁓ that country song from way back in the day
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ wanna make you feel warm. I think Bryce is an idiot. Like, what are you doing, man? Who says something like that? Nobody wants you to like, if you say something like that, nobody wants you to play any golf tournament anymore. That's ridiculous.
Matthew Zampello: Thank you for your warning. Get him, Dom.
Kevin Spisak: Right. Does he want one of the tours to just like beg him, you know, get on their hands and knees and just beg like, ⁓ please, Bryson, you have to come back.
Matthew Zampello: Would you rather play golf with Bryson or Blocky?
Kevin Spisak: mean, Bryson, just it would still be fun. Just like to watch.
Matthew Zampello: Okay.
Dominic Colangelo: It'd be cool to see him bomb it like that. think Blocky would just kind of talk your ear off.
Kevin Spisak: you
Matthew Zampello: Kevin would you rather play golf with Bryson or Phil?
Kevin Spisak: Phil, I think you would be able to learn a little more. There'd probably be some really funny stories. Bryson, you're just trying to play a psychologist and figure out why he's such a psycho. But I think, Phil, you could just listen to him tell stories, and it would be very interesting.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah. And Phil's funny. We can admit that, right? We're not Phil haters on this podcast.
Matthew Zampello: No. ⁓
Dominic Colangelo: I just don't understand Bryson's his path with all this. Like he complains like crazy at that New Mexico tournament or the Mexico tournament. And then just like after all this stuff, he's somehow surprised that the funding fell through. Like he had to have known leading up to this, but I don't, I really hate that comment. the I want to play where I'm wanted. Nobody is wanted anywhere except for like Jordan Spieth. You know what mean? Like I feel like everyone is earning their spot like they should and that's what he should be doing. It's not, oh, I want you to play here. I mean, everyone wants Rory to play, but he's not because he's good and he can, you know, like I just not a fan of all of his comments these days. He's slowly slipping down my my top. rank list. It's annoying
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, for sure. We should just let him play at Bay Hill every year just so we can just watch him hit bombs over the lake. And then the one that doesn't carry, we can just make fun of him.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓
Dominic Colangelo: would be the opposite of John Daly.
Kevin Spisak: Ha ha ha.
Matthew Zampello: He ⁓ yeah, he's definitely... His career is going more towards... just just tanking not tanking but like being such a controversial figure versus somebody like Scotty or Rory like he wants to be that but he never will be ⁓ he's in his own way so ⁓ Dom talks was about pebble pebble beach
Dominic Colangelo: Oh yeah, so in 2014, they lost one of their iconic cypress trees in the middle of the fairway and they just replanted one. They airlifted one of the trees from Spyglass and then replanted it, which is badass. That's such a cool thing to do. Is that though, I don't know the distance.
Kevin Spisak: That's awesome.
Dominic Colangelo: Is that like right around where these guys are driving the ball now? Like, because, you know, everyone's bombing it. It depends on the wind where it's going to be, but it kind of seems like where Morikawa this year was waiting for 30 minutes in the middle of the fairway. Like, it's kind of just going to add another little hiccup for that hole.
Matthew Zampello: Mm-hmm. Yeah, I think it takes, I think it definitely puts another object in play, right? That you have to minute round, right? It just doesn't, if you're behind it, you gotta, you know, shape the ball around it one way. So I think it's great. ⁓ that hole is kind of becoming a par four and a half a little bit.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah. Mm-hmm. Yeah, and it's kind of going back to like what Gary Player was saying about the rollback where there's only so much, I think he said irrigation. Like there's only so much how far back they can move these pins. Cause he was talking about a gust at the time. Cause it's, you know, that same plot of land as much as they're trying to buy more land around there, but pebble, you're literally on a cliff. So.
Matthew Zampello: Deuce.
Dominic Colangelo: unless they just put the T-box in the middle of 17 green, like it's not gonna work. So it makes sense to just add more obstacles. And you know, you're bringing back a little tradition with it. ⁓ which actually there was another very famous tree that fell down and that was in the abandoned Dunes Resort. The iconic sheep ranch tree fell down.
Matthew Zampello: That fell down recently?
Dominic Colangelo: Or at least it was the branch, like the iconic branch. Like finally, you know, that tree is completely dead, but it just finally fell down. So I don't know if there was like a logo or like there was some urge about it, but just another, you know, weather happens.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, there's two trees. There's one, the ghost tree on old Mac. And then there's the she branch tree. I wonder which one fell. That's tough. That's suck. I think the only other couple of things is we kind of hit on Blocky, but he hit the new cycle again last week at Bandin actually at the PGA Pro Championship. Kevin, what'd you see from good old Michael Block?
Dominic Colangelo: Mm-hmm.
Kevin Spisak: He just won't go away. Every time you think he's gone, he just comes right back. Yeah, I'm personally not like a blocky hater. I think there's a lot of blocky haters out there. I thought his story was pretty fun. You know, when he first kind of hit the scene, you know, the thing where he said if he could drive it like Rory, you know, he'd be as good. That was a little crazy. I think he was getting a little ahead of himself.
Dominic Colangelo: you
Kevin Spisak: But I don't know, I'm here for Michael Black making some more appearances.
Matthew Zampello: I don't know, man. I think he's milking his 10 seconds of fame, but who am I to say?
Dominic Colangelo: Wouldn't you though?
Kevin Spisak: He keeps, yeah, and he keeps playing well though. So it's like, he's milking it, but like he's still performing. He, he kind of floundered a little when he got some more, you know, PGA starts, you know, after his like first big blow up, but like, he just keeps showing back up, keeps trying hard.
Matthew Zampello: for sure. I was there that we get Colonial after the PGA Championship when he got the sponsor's invite to Colonial and he missed the cut by, I don't know, 10. It wasn't even close. That was so funny.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, but let's not pretend that if we were golf pros, like your dream is to play in the pros and he won and he got to play. then like, I think we're more not fans of his personality, but like what he's doing is pretty sick. Like, what'd he start when he was, was it three years ago? So if he was 45 plus, finally getting into the PGA, that's pretty sweet.
Matthew Zampello: Good.
Kevin Spisak: He's 49 right now. But what's so bad about his personality? Am I crazy?
Dominic Colangelo: Mm-hmm.
Matthew Zampello: I think he's just, I think he's doing it for the bit. Like think it's a bit.
Dominic Colangelo: like not since dear.
Kevin Spisak: I don't
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, like I think the whole thing, like, you know, like even on the broadcast, he was like, this is for the haters or like, whatever, like, I don't know. It's just like, I just, I don't know. He's got, I don't know. Maybe, maybe I'm, maybe I'm becoming an old man.
Kevin Spisak: I yeah. He turned off a lot of people ⁓ way back when with his first comments. But I think he's just a goofy dad who just is obsessed with golf.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, maybe. Maybe I'm I'm Maybe I'm wrong.
Kevin Spisak: I feel like I would be like the same. I would just like say like really dumb things, getting caught up in the heat of the moment, but still just keep grinding.
Dominic Colangelo: His hater comment, it seemed like he had something in his head and then lost it halfway through. And he's like, for all you haters, whatever, be haters. He's like, yeah, I actually don't remember what I was gonna say there. You just be a hater.
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ and then the only other thing lasting on news is Jordan Spieth, is, you know, playing around with the Pro V1 X left dash, kind of like yours truly. And he flashed on that Thursday. I think Dom sent Jordan Spieth back in the group message, ⁓ quickly to ⁓ Not good for the rest of it. So.
Dominic Colangelo: and then we learned that he... Yeah, he did not. He is not back.
Kevin Spisak: You
Matthew Zampello: ⁓ Still figuring it out. So that's news. Kevin, tell us about the truest championship.
Kevin Spisak: Still figuring out the ball, maybe it goes a little straighter for him.
Dominic Colangelo: It's definitely the ball that's the issue.
Kevin Spisak: Truist Championship. Who knows what Truist is? I know I don't. I guess. It's like how Dom didn't know what the Valspar was. Truist never looked into it.
Matthew Zampello: The bank, the bank, right?
Dominic Colangelo: is it some bank? It seems like a finance thing. Yes. Saw a commercial, like, ⁓ sure.
Matthew Zampello: It's... it's finance.
Kevin Spisak: So quail hollow gets a lot of like shit talk about it, but it's a sick horse. And they tout, you know, the what is it the green miles that they're 1617 18. And they tout it being one of the toughest. We've talked a lot in the past about like, you know,
Matthew Zampello: A green mile
Kevin Spisak: Alcatraz and the snake pit and the bear trap and all these things that are just not like accurate in like saying like this is going to be so tough for the tournament. The green mile is actually brutal. In the 2025 season. Let me pull back up here. So all three holes were in the top 20 hardest holes on the PGA Tour of 2025. So absolutely brutal. Love the challenge. The number 18 was the ninth hardest hole of the season last year. Then 17 was 11th and 16 was 19th. So brutal final stretch. Quail Hollow is really making an appearance. I am all for Quail just hosting majors.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, or are you not a fan of this, Matt?
Matthew Zampello: Well, I'm not a Tom Fazio fan, so ⁓ I don't like the fuzz. ⁓ Fonzie I just I don't know it I agree. It's cool. Like it's big. It's it's whatever it just doesn't I Don't know quail hollow doesn't quail hollow is perfect for the PJ tour. It's just not it's not where I want my majors I want my majors at aeronomic and PGA Frisco. No, just kidding. Not be different
Kevin Spisak: What a You
Dominic Colangelo: I was like, no way you're serious.
Matthew Zampello: know, I want my majors at like, and maybe Quail Hall is part of that. I don't know. But ⁓ just think it belongs on the PGA Tour. Doesn't belong on majors.
Kevin Spisak: What if it just wasn't a part of the PGA Tour regular season?
Matthew Zampello: And maybe that's the problem. I feel like Pebble is the only course that can pull that off of like it's on the PGA tour regularly and it also hosts a major. And I think that's just because it's Pebble Beach. I just don't think any like the reason Augusta is so cool because it is, I mean, we see it every year, but it's a major and like, yeah. And the reason why we love when we go back to Shinnecock is we only see Shinnecock every 10 years are the US Open, right?
Dominic Colangelo: you
Kevin Spisak: But what about like Tori? Like I think Tori Pines is pretty cool when they play it for majors.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, I think it's yeah, I guess that's another one that can pull it off and maybe it's a scenic thing. Maybe it's a scene or maybe it's like a scenery thing. But I also don't think Torrey Pines is like. I don't think it's great like I can't. I can tell you Torrey Pines like the 18th hole, but I can't tell you any holes like like if you ask me that if you ask me what a hole looks like at Quail Hollow, the only one I can tell you is the 18th because it has that river that goes down the middle of the fairway and that looks scary.
Dominic Colangelo: I'm looking at them now, they look pretty sweet.
Matthew Zampello: agree, ⁓ perfect for the PvP Tour. It's perfect for a signature event. But if I got the invite to play, I'd go play it. mean, yeah, you know, it's fine.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, there's just so much hate last year all around like Quail and like, oh, you know, it shouldn't be hosting another major. Like, it's just like a boring course, ho hum course, and then it just ate people up. So I think it proved it is built for majors.
Matthew Zampello: There was. then take it off the video tour.
Dominic Colangelo: What do we think the winning score is gonna be? single digit.
Matthew Zampello: 16. 16.
Kevin Spisak: 14.
Dominic Colangelo: Okay, give me single digits. I'll be different.
Matthew Zampello: Ooh, single digits is tough on the PS4 these days.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, if it's hard course, maybe some weather, who knows? It's Carolinas. But all right. Any other ⁓ any other? Yeah, let's do it.
Kevin Spisak: Are you guys ready for some trivia?
Matthew Zampello: Yes.
Kevin Spisak: But all right, trivia time. So we'll ask a trivia question if either of you get it. The other two will chug. I feel like for fun this week, we should just add if neither of you get it, you guys have to do some sort of chug. It doesn't have to be a full chug, but just something.
Dominic Colangelo: Dang it. That's a good one.
Matthew Zampello: Alright, I'll put a little glass of wine down.
Kevin Spisak: So the, so quail has hosted two PGA championships, 2017 and 2025. What team event did it host and what year?
Matthew Zampello: President's Cup. 2024 was the President's Cup at Royal Montreal because I played it. Subtle Flex.
Dominic Colangelo: was gonna say.
Kevin Spisak: Congrats on all your success.
Matthew Zampello: So that was 2020.
Dominic Colangelo: Give me 2021, because I have no idea.
Matthew Zampello: Now I'm going 2022.
Kevin Spisak: Matt gets it every single time. 2022 Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow.
Matthew Zampello: Hahaha
Dominic Colangelo: Thank That's impressive.
Matthew Zampello: and it was won by the United States.
Kevin Spisak: just as always. Does anyone get, does anyone get as amped up for the president's cup as the rider cup? Is anyone.
Matthew Zampello: You guys can... You guys... The president, this is a hot take that I have. The president's cup needs to go to mixed. Imagine Nelly playing with Scotty. Like that would be so sick. And then you play it against like, you know.
Kevin Spisak: That would be amazing. That'd be so much fun.
Dominic Colangelo: That'd be fun.
Matthew Zampello: who I have all that yeah yeah exactly like Hideki Matsuyama with the girl area Jutanagarn or whoever like that would be that'd be sick
Kevin Spisak: the million Asian female golfers that are incredible. Yeah.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah, they're so good. That'd be pretty sweet.
Kevin Spisak: Why does he have to play with him? Why does he have to play with him? You couldn't have said Adam Scott.
Matthew Zampello: What? Adam Scott! Adam Scott gets to play with Minji Lee! They're both Australian!
Kevin Spisak: Why do they have to stick with their own kind? Come on, Matt.
Dominic Colangelo: No, that's actually I would that be so much fun and like, yeah.
Matthew Zampello: Wouldn't you tune into that?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, 100%. That would be awesome.
Dominic Colangelo: Brian Roll App, we know you're listening. You've gone through Matt's other picks. Let's make this happen. That'd be great.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah. Maybe some great team up that you could do ⁓ with that.
Dominic Colangelo: What's the format of presidents? it like, is there alternate shot involved? Cause that could be.
Matthew Zampello: It's the same thing. It's literally the exact same as the ride.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ yeah, let's make it happen.
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, just Europe's not a part of it.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, it's just rest.
Dominic Colangelo: So Kevin, you get a beer?
Kevin Spisak: Yeah, let me go get a beer.
Dominic Colangelo: All right, what do you got, Kevin?
Kevin Spisak: I got a nice tasty cold as the Rockies Coors Lite. Coors, if you're listening, we'll take a sponsorship. Budweiser, we'll take a sponsorship.
Matthew Zampello: Peace.
Dominic Colangelo: Budweiser would be cool, because we're just talking USA. President's cup. And then I have this, ooh that was a thick pour.
Kevin Spisak: Dom, I'm gonna start now, see if you can catch me.
Matthew Zampello: Cheers.
Kevin Spisak: Damn it.
Dominic Colangelo: ⁓ that sucked.
Kevin Spisak: was too much carbonation.
Matthew Zampello: You're the Kevin. You're the man, Kevin.
Dominic Colangelo: I'm crying. All right. While Kevin finishes, we're talking one and done's baby. So we didn't think it was gonna happen. And we definitely didn't think it would happen this soon, but we have another one and done winner.
Kevin Spisak: Hmm.
Matthew Zampello: One and done.
Dominic Colangelo: Kind of wild. was, if you take out the Derrick, that's two, one and Duns in a row. Cause Matt had Fitzpatrick. So very fun for the pod. That means Kevin is next. So we'll see what, how that goes. ⁓ quick recap. So I Cameron Young and then Kevin went with Mr. McLaren himself, Justin Rose. He ended up at a T 65 no cut event. Huge for Kevin. ⁓ and then
Kevin Spisak: you
Dominic Colangelo: Big Daddy Matt with the Nikolai Hojgaard and he did pretty solid and up T23. So brings our totals to Matt ⁓ is at 582 and then Kevin is at 421 and I'm sitting at 231. So then with that, Matt, you want to give us your next pick for the truest championship.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah, gotta change up my strategy a little bit. Trying to catch, catch Kevin, ⁓ eventually catch Dom. Horses for courses, Rory McElroy. Gimme roars, baby. Yeah. I- I-
Kevin Spisak: Wow. ⁓
Dominic Colangelo: Wow, you're not, I can't believe you're not saving them for the majors. Who are you?
Matthew Zampello: No, he's already won his major. think he always finishes top 10 here. It's basically guaranteed.
Dominic Colangelo: Trivia question, how many times has he won here? Kevin? Four.
Kevin Spisak: Wow
Dominic Colangelo: All right, great pick. Who you got, Kevin?
Kevin Spisak: Um, yeah, I like the Rory pick. I would have picked him. Um, you know, at least I would have really seriously thought about it, but I'm going to pre buy him for the U S open since Matt gets to pre buy people. I'm pre buying Rory for the U S open. He he's it's been a long time since he won, but we're not talking about the U S open. We're talking about the truest championship and I'm going to go with JJ spawn.
Dominic Colangelo: Ooh, that's a fun one. Do you have any reasoning?
Matthew Zampello: figure one.
Kevin Spisak: no, not at all. Just kidding. No, he is just the vibes. He's ninth overall in the world golf rankings and he is just constantly present. I can't go for the win. I just need points. I thought I was catching ground on Dom. I thought Matt was being left in the dust and ⁓ Matt's back and Dom is even more back. So I got to do some catching up here.
Matthew Zampello: Just vibes, baby.
Dominic Colangelo: Good-bye,
Matthew Zampello: No, I'm back.
Dominic Colangelo: All right, I love it.
Matthew Zampello: We keep having all these damn signature events, we can't get any missed cuts. That's the problem.
Dominic Colangelo: That's a great point actually, all those diggies.
Kevin Spisak: What? Yeah. And Dom's stupid worst one was for the Zurich where he got 30th. Like he couldn't have got, couldn't have gotten.
Matthew Zampello: Damn you, Pearson Cootie.
Dominic Colangelo: you ⁓ my goodness gracious. Well, with that, we're keeping with a thoroughbred thought process. I am running out of good players, but I still think we'll have enough by the end of the season. Give me Ludwig Oberg.
Matthew Zampello: you
Dominic Colangelo: Long course, long hitter, ball striking's there. And he's not winning any tournaments, but he's doing very well. So I like the old, the old Swede.
Kevin Spisak: I like that, I could see him pulling it off.
Matthew Zampello: Good pick. Yeah, you hope it's a good course fit for him. So makes sense.
Kevin Spisak: Now feel like I got the weak horse in this race, we're going to see. JJ is going to light it up.
Matthew Zampello: I got my US Open picks. And we got the PGA preview coming up soon. So that'll be next week. Get some PGA.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah. Can you imagine Rory misses the cut?
Matthew Zampello: at the PGA.
Kevin Spisak: Now this week. A place he's won four times. Matt throws the jigs on him.
Dominic Colangelo: No, this week.
Matthew Zampello: Hmm.
Dominic Colangelo: Yeah.
Matthew Zampello: That would well, there's no, there's a note. There's no cut this week.
Kevin Spisak: Is every freaking week a signature event?
Matthew Zampello: That's what I'm saying, if they're all signature events, none are signature events.
Dominic Colangelo: All right, well, if he's under or above, if he's T 50 or worse, then the curse is real.
Matthew Zampello: I still have Scotty in my bag. I still have Tommy in my bag. I still have.
Dominic Colangelo: Everybody, you've been choosing like, hello guys.
Matthew Zampello: FFFF-
Kevin Spisak: Did you just breeze?
Matthew Zampello: No, that's only if I still have Cam Young, I still have Cam Young, I still have Cam Young.
Dominic Colangelo: Let's just go through them real quick. Chandler, show us. Matt, you have everybody left. except for Matt Fitzpatrick.
Matthew Zampello: Alright, I don't need to it anymore. I got this, don't worry.
Dominic Colangelo: No, it's scary that you have everybody left is what I'm getting at. All right, so anything else, boys?
Matthew Zampello: I know, I know, I know, I know, so.
Kevin Spisak: I I'm going follow the Truist Championship more intensely than any PGA Tour event this year, just in support of Quail Hollow and all the shit that was talked about it last year.
Dominic Colangelo: I respect that. I'll do it too in solidarity, just to prove Matt wrong.
Matthew Zampello: I feel like Quail Hollow is like Joe Buck. A lot of people hate him, a lot of people love him.
Dominic Colangelo: That's a perfect, that's a great analogy. And nobody knows why they hate it.
Matthew Zampello: Yeah
Kevin Spisak: This quail.
Matthew Zampello: And yeah, nobody knows why you hate him. mean, it's just kind of, he's just, he's easily hateable.
Kevin Spisak: Does Quail Hollow love Kyle Schwaber too?
Dominic Colangelo: Does Quell Hollow hate Houston sports? Who knows?
Matthew Zampello: is quail hollow short? No, it's actually very long.
Dominic Colangelo: we just lose Kevin? Oh boy. All right, well that's a good way to end it. Thanks for staying with us. Follow us on our socials, Apple, YouTube, Spotify, at Under the Covers Golf. Pretty excited for the truest championship. We know Matt loves Quail Hollow, but we'll see how it goes and we'll see you next week.
Matthew Zampello: Now we're back.
